Mitt Romney eyes smaller footprint, later start for 2012

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is letting donors know it’ll be a while before he looks to 2012 — and that any presidential campaign he builds will have a much smaller staff than in 2008.

“People are exhausted from the 2010 election, and they’re not anxious to begin right away with the next campaign,” Romney told 245 of his top financial supporters on a conference call Thursday, a Romney aide told POLITICO. His team organized the call to connect with top supporters following a busy 2010 season and discuss Romney’s political future.

Romney also told supporters that his organization will be “smaller in scale than our last effort.”

The rationale, as Romney explained it: In 2008, he was a little-known figure who had to spend millions on a large organization if he was to compete against Arizona Sen. John McCain for the Republican nomination. In that cycle, he announced an exploratory committee in January 2007 and officially announced a bid in February.

This time, January and February will come and go without an announcement, he told his supporters — and he can plan a leaner staff because he’s now a leading national Republican figure and needs a team that can hang on through a prolonged primary campaign amid a crowded GOP field.

Joining him on the call were top staffers certain to be part of any operation, however small, including Beth Myers, his 2008 campaign manager; Spencer Zwick, who was his finance director; Matt Rhoades, who runs his Free and Strong America PAC; and Eric Fehrnstrom, his longtime spokesman.

Romney eyes smaller footprint, later start for 2012

That just means he plans a quick blitz just before the primaries and elections, lots of backstabbing, sabotage, and muckraking through surrogates in a short amount of time; dirty, nasty, crooked, deceptive, snake-like behavior. Same as in 2008.

If he is the nominee, FR won’t support him, so you are free to say whatever you want about him.

Romney is already feeling insecure, or he wouldn’t have made this “announcement.” The guy polls, so he knows he’s not the choice of conservatives and TEA Party Republicans.

Exactly so. He shifts with the sands, as you put it.
Political expediency, but he screwed-up when he enacted romneycare.

That’s baggage he can’t lose on any airline.

Wish I had your confidence, but with 2 years left, there's a lot of dirty dealing to come...

The libs would practically have to catch Sarah murdering someone in cold blood at this point to do any worse than they've already done to her.

They can pick on her family, bring up every worn out detail of her time in office, replay clips of her Couric interview, reprint quotes from her detractors, but it's all going to be for naught. She's already grown larger and has gained popularity with every left-wing assault against her.

No, they'll have to dig deep into the ancient Democrat playbooks to find some other way to undo her. All I can say, is good luck with that. The American people have already seen who she really is, so there's little the left can do at this point to reverse that.

If they'd had a lick of sense, they would have left her to quietly finish out her term in the Alaska Governor's office. She'd still be there, while Romney, et al were ramping up their 2012 campaigns. She may have even faded into obscurity, had they simply left her alone, but no, their hatred of this good woman is so rabid, that they just couldn't help themselves.

They wound up unleashing the mother of all Mama Grizzlies.

In future, Democrats will look back on that one sordid episode as one of the worst strategic mistakes in their history. Heaven help them, because Sarah's coming, and she means business.

You are probably right about him not wanting to wait until 2016. I just don’t think he has a chance in the 2012 primaries against any true conservative candidate - He will not get the backing of the tea party - without their support he cannot advance.

Mitt - save your $$$$!!!!

Don’t underestimate Romney. He’s a very tough aggressive campaigner and could win many of the states that McCain won in the ‘08 primary plus his own (Nevada, Michigan, etc)

No troll. He wouldn't.

And BTW, he's not a tough campaigner. He lost to McCain in his neighbor state of New Hampshire!

He's a fraud that we see through, but you...? Well, you're a troll.

That'll get him the same results. Maybe he's in cahoots with Huckaboob? VP Romney?

Mitt Romney eyes smaller footprint...

Romney can "eye" whatever he wants but that footprint is going to be on his backside when the voters kick him out of the Primaries and sends im back to wherever he came from. Count on it Chameleon.

LOL. He so wants to be POTUS. He'll run, but the support he thought he had lined-up must have let him down to the point where he had to take a second look at his bank book.

romneycare is killing him. He can't shake that rap. He owns it.

yeah they elect Bush’s, Dole’s and McCain’s. :/

All of them were nominated, but you'll notice that of the three, only the Bush's were actually elected to the presidency. Poppy Bush was a former VP, and Dubya was a former Governor.

The other two you mentioned were both milquetoast, Beltway legislators. No real leadership creds between them.

That should serve as a warning to those on this site who are promoting current Republican legislators for the 2012 race. Republican voters aren't likely to enthusiastically support yet another candidate who has no executive credentials.

“And BTW, he’s not a tough campaigner. He lost to McCain in his neighbor state of New Hampshire! “

McCain was a very tough campaigner who came behind from near bankruptcy. But Romney probably can win NH next time since it is close to MA.
