Sarah Palin says she is seriously considering a run for the White House, and she believes she could beat President Obama in 2012, the former Alaska governor told ABC News' Barbara Walters. "I'm looking at the lay of the land now, and ... trying to figure that out, if it's a good thing for the country, for the discourse, for my family, if it's a good thing," Palin said in an interview scheduled to air in full Dec. 9 on ABC as part of Walters' "10 Most Fascinating People" of 2010.

I'm tired of this tactic. If folks want to oppose Palin, they need to do it on policy!

Therein of course, lies the problem.

Even here on this thread we have so many naggy sad assed losers who are so afraid of backing Palin because the DBM has done a super hit job on her and our side has listened.

For the leader of the new conservative media,FreeRepublic.com we sure have a lot of posters here who are extremely influenced by the DBM. How sad.

If you are a conservative poster here on FR and you see the potential of Sarah Palin running against either Obama or Hillary and yo cant get past all the demagogue that the DBM has done to her, your are a weakling,IMHO.

In the past year Palin has truly hit her stride, more than paid her dues by helping to elect countless Republicans and maintaining a charismatic persona that almost guarantees tens of thousands will turn out no mater where she appears.

Show me another Republican, male or female, who can do that and I will vote for them!

Until then if you don't like Palin get the hell off these threads....please.

Truth is I don’t know why they are so worried. I don’t think anyone could stop Sarah Palin if she wants to run for the nomination. LOL

Let’s look at who’s more qualified, owebama or Palin. Who would you trust the country with? Palin was a governor who did a LOT for energy, Owebama, he fixed potholes and is a proven failure.

God help us if Huckebee or Romney or Gingrich, and as much as I love him, Barbour, are our choices.

If that’s the choice, I’m voting 3rd party, no more McCains.

Pawlenty, the cho-choo train formor gov from Minnesota, ethanol supporter isn’t an option either.

Who’s a conservative candidate willing to run? Barbour is the most conservative out of the above ruling class, he’ll never win. Who else? Palin can win, she’s got the personality that ticks off the left. How fun would that be, the first female president to be a conservative?

Great post. Not only that she has paid her dues and has earned the right to run with as little backstabbing/sabotaging from other “conservatives “ as possible, IMHO!

But: Her experience in government, at any significant level, consists solely of being a governor for 2 1/2 years...

Ahem... Experience you say? Here's just a partial summary of Sarah Palin's experience.

Governor Sarah Palin’s record:

Energy Independence, Development, and Environmental Stewardship

*Governor Palin’s cornerstone accomplishment is AGIA (Alaska Gasline Inducement Act). During the Palin administration, TransCanada and Exxon formed an alliance to build a natural gas pipeline from Alaska to the Lower 48. Under Governor Palin’s governance, the project was expanded and revised from what previous governors had proposed with an open policy process for the Alaskan people. More progress was made on this effort than in the previous 30 years. This is the largest private sector infrastructure project in North American history and helps put us on the path to energy independence.

*Governor Palin’s administration opened up drilling for oil and natural gas at Pt. Thompson for the first time in decades.

*Governor Palin created the Alaska’s Petroleum Integrity Office to oversee all aspects of energy development and to make sure oilfield equipment was safe to operate and a Climate Change Subcabinet to comprehensively and honestly evaluate climate change.

Fiscal Conservatism

*Governor Palin reduced earmark requests for the state of Alaska by 80% during her administration, requesting only earmarks that would benefit the country as a whole.

* Governor Palin reduced spending in her budget for Fiscal Year 2010 by more than one billion dollars from the previous governor’s Fiscal Year 2007 budget, a 9.5% real reduction in spending. Her FY2010 budget was $10.57 billion compared to Governor Murkowski’s FY2007 budget of nearly $11.7 billion. At the same time, she fulfilled her campaign promise to forward fund education, allowing districts greater flexibility and predictability in their planning.

*Governor Palin opposed much of the “stimulus”, wanting only to accept 55% of the money allocated to Alaska, specifically only dollars dedicated to infrastructure [projects. Although the Alaskan legislature ultimately overturned her veto, she stood firm on her commitment to help Alaska to become more self-sufficient while not adding to not add to the skyrocketing national debt.

* Governor Palin invested $5 billion in state savings.

Walking the Walk on Fiscal Responsibility

*Governor Palin sold the private jet purchased by the previous governor. She state it was an unnecessary financial burden on the state and was unable to land on many of the state’s landing strips.

* To cut costs that would be incurred by continuing to use a personal driver like previous governors, the governor drove herself from Wasilla to her office in Anchorage. She also dismissed the governor’s personal chef stationed in Juneau, Alaska’s capital.

* Governor Palin accepted less state per diem for herself and her family than her predecessors even though she had a larger family.

10th Amendment Advocacy/Promotion of State Constitution

*Showing that she is a strong supporter of the 10th amendment, Governor Palin advocated for the sovereignty of the state of Alaska.

*Governor Palin’s administration sued the federal government for placing the polar bear on the endangered species list, as this restriction affected energy development which would increase energy costs.

*A Constitutionalist, Governor Palin signed Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share (ACES) bill into law. The Alaska constitution states that the Alaskan people own the oil and other resources. This law ensures that the “owners”, the people of Alaska, receive a clear and equitable share of oil profits.

National Defense/Veterans

*Governor Palin supported ground-based missile defense Ft Greely and other Alaskan Bases around to protect America from America’s enemies. She criticized the Obama administration for cuts that they made to this national defense system.

*Governor Palin, with Senators Murkowski and Begich, fought for retirement benefits from the federal government that were due to the Alaska Territorial Guard members who fought during World War II. These benefits were eventually rewarded to these veterans by the federal government.

* Governor Palin visited Alaskan soldiers in Kosovo and Kuwait.

Transparency/Anti-Corruption

*Governor Palin signed bipartisan ethics reform legislation into law that helped to hold both the legislative and executive branches accountable.

*Governor Palin put the state checkbook online, allowing all constituents to see how state money was being spent.

Health Care

*Governor Palin introduced health care transparency legislation which aimed at putting information in the hands of consumers about cost and quality of health care as a way to make health care consumer driven and accessible.

Sanctity and Dignity of All Life

* Governor Palin strongly supported both parental consent and parental notification legislation.

*Governor Palin increased educational funding for special needs’ children.

*Governor Palin implemented the Senior Benefits Program to support low income seniors.

Positions Held while Governor

* Chairman of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.

*Vice Chair of the National Governors Association Natural Resource Committee.

* She served as chair of the Alaska Conservation Commission, which regulates Alaska’s most valuable non-renewable resources: oil and gas. She was elected by her peers to serve as president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors. In this role, she worked with local, state and federal officials to promote solutions to the needs of Alaska’s communities.

She exposed legal violations and conflicts of interest of Alaska Republican leaders, including the former state Attorney General and the State GOP Chairman (who was also an Oil & Gas Commissioner), who was doing work for the party on public time and supplying a lobbyist with a sensitive e-mail. Several went to jail.

Governor Palin signed several pieces of legislation and resolutions during July 2009. They were:

•SB-125: Encourage aerospace development in AK
•SB-177: Extend sunset for sport fishing guides and address harvest data collection
•Pro-energy development and missile defense resolutions
HJR-27: Alaska a Sovereign State
HJR-25: Hydro-Electric a Renewable Resource
HJR-28: Oppose Federal Restriction on Oil and Gas Development
HJR-12: Support Missile Defense System
•SB-88: Power cost equalization
•Defending Second Amendment rights.

SB-201: Extends Concealed Carry Permit Expiration to 5 Years from Birthday.

HJR-17: Urges Congress not to pass HR-45.The federal legislation would put burdensome licensing and registration controls on individual gun owners.

SJR-10: Urges Congress to pass S-371. The legislation was to ensure that citizens of each state who are licensed or authorized by their home state to carry a concealed weapon, could do so in another state as long as they comply with the laws of that state.

SJR-3: The resolution expresses support to Congress for repealing the ban on carrying a firearm on National Park Service lands.

•SB-3 Requiring information sharing between two agencies.

•HRJ-19 Supports requirement of escort for loaded tankers traversing Prince William Sound.

•The Governor appointed 29 people to boards, commissions and councils and made three judicial appointments between July 6, 2009 and July 26, 2009.

Governor Palin’s total appointments for 2009 was123, including 116 to boards, commissions and councils, five judicial appointments, one legislative and one attorney general. Governor Palin averaged one appointment every 1.67 days during 2009.

•The Governor vetoed $28.6 million in stimulus money that would have involved federal interference with the state of Alaska.

Governor Palin signed bills removing experience caps on teacher’s salaries and extending boat safety programs.

Governor Palin signed legislation that gave struggling charter schools a one-year grace period to increase enrollments or integrate with other charter schools. She also signed legislation that authorizes Alaska “to enroll in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.”

Governor Palin signed legislation granting birth certificates for stillborn babies.

Governor Palin signed legislation authorizing the state to fund retirement benefits for Alaska Territorial Guard veterans. The federal government ceased funding benefits on April 1, 2009.

Governor Palin signed legislation safeguarding student loans.

Sarah Palin was Commander of the Alaska National Guard. Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the first line of defense unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units in the United States. As governor of Alaska, Palin was briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism daily.

Governor Palin was the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security’s counterterrorism plans.

I agree with you.

People compare Palin the Reagan and the comparison is that they were Gov’s, and they were Conservatives. The similarities end there.

Reagan was a successful Actor, union leader, TV Star, Conservative Columnist, and two term Gov.

Palin was a TV sports reporter, mother, mayor, and half a term Gov. Now she is an infrequent talking head.

Reagan spent years exploring and defining his conservative values. His writing, although hidden at the time, were prolific and the logic well defined. His “common sense” was based on years of experience, research, and well thought out dogma.

While Reagan fought the economic issues of the sixties, he also too significant leadership roles in the anti-war battles in CA in a time where it was a real “Law and Order” vs Anarchy movement. Serious issues hung in the balance and Reagan needed to rely on his values and leadership skills to literally keep the peace.

Palin fought the corruption in the State House. Weren’t they Murkowski’s too?

Sarah Palin is clearly a charismatic speaker and is saying the things a lot of us feel. Her “positions” are solid middle american, and I have to say I agree with a lot more of them than I disagree with.

But, and this is a big but, while the left hated Reagan’s positions, they knew they were dealing with a giant. They knew from experience in CA in the 60’s that he meant what he said, and said what he meant. They also knew that he was someone who was willing to compromise—giving up 2 yards to gain 8.

Sarah has not demonstrated that kind of leadership. Is she capable? Perhaps. But the rhetoric I hear is not one that even considers working with the other side—her positions seem to be as solidly stubborn as the people we have in place now.

Finally, Ronnie knew how to deliver his lines. I listen to his speeches now and many of them still bring tears to my eyes. I cannot fathom Sarah on the plaza in front of the Wall in Berlin—calling out Gorby. I cannot imagine Sarah delivering the eloquence of the Challenger speech. Her speech patterns are, to my ear, immature and clumsy. I know that it is not always fair to judge someone on syntax errors—we went through eight years of that—but I believe that in order to get people to listen to you, they have to be able to listen to you. And yes, I DO want a President that can string together a full sentence or two without some colloquial phrase. And really, “Mama Grizzlies?” Really?

Sarah has potential. But I personally believe that in this TV culture she digs that limelight a little too much. I am afraid that we would be voting for someone as equally unprepared for the job as Obama is.

I told my kids during the last election that you need to see past the words that people say during their speeches. You have to look at their actions throughout their lives to really judge their character. She is someone that struggled to get her education, stumbled around in the TV biz for a while and then stumbled into politics. I simply do not find her genuine. Put simply, Reagan could tell me that the aliens were landing tomorrow, but that we would pull together and it would be alright. I don’t think that Sarah could endear that much trust. I guess that is what it comes down to: “I just don’t trust her yet.”

I admire Palin for her stand for her children—both Trig and Bristol. I respect that. But, having faced similar decisions in my life I understand that it if you have values, they are not even decisions. And, as my mother taught me: “You don’t get credit for doing the right thing—because that is what you are supposed to do.”

In the end I appreciate how folks are dying for another Reagan—much as the Dems long for another FDR or JFK. At this point I am conceding that it won’t happen again in my lifetime. And that this point, I would be happy with another Ike.

No Sarah is no Ronnie. And she won’t be for a long time. If you love her, tell her not to run this time. She is very young and will be on the scene for a long time. Let her steep in life for a while.

Vote for Owebama, or Palin? Who are the moderates going to choose? Owebama has lost all his ‘hopeyness’. The entire world is making fun of him. I believe the Roadrunner could beat him in the next election.

“Obviously I would agree that if Sarah Palin can bring her negative poll numbers into a more standard line she would be highly competitive. I just don't believe she can.”
AW, since you're from MO., let me remind you a bit about polls in general. They depend on who's doing the poll, what they're asking, and what kind of answers they want to get. Polls can be manipulated like you wouldn't believe: for instance, the polls about the Natural Streams Act here in our fair state in 1989-90 said it would pas with overwhelming support. Instead, it was defeated by the biggest margin in MO. initiative election history. FWIW, I don't put too much stock in “polls”.

He didn’t quickly brush past 41, it was a struggle. He lost Iowa in the primary. It wasn’t until the debates, and he had to fight to be included in that, that he started gaining on Bush.

Ronald Reagan was on the ropes after the Iowa caucuses. His campaign staff was a mess with John Sears still at the helm, they were practically out of money, Reagan was down in national GOP polls to Bush and was being written off.

Then he went to NH, where he had lost in 1976. He fired Sears, brought in Bill Casey, went on a 2 week personal barnstorming tour of NH, snookered Bush at the NH debate, ("I paid for this microphone, Mr. Green") and walked away from the NH primary with 51% of the vote in a multi-candidate field.

It still wasn't over. He had a setback in Florida and coujldn't afford to contest Pennsylvania but the ship had been righted and he went on to the nomination.

Even in the general election, he didn't pull away from Carter 'til the debate, 8 days before the election. As you said, he had to fight tooth and nail to win in '80 against a man the country was looking for an excuse to fire. The MSM had done a number on him like they have with Palin.

Lots of parallels to today.

Governor Palin is the best conservative candidate since Reagan, and probably the hundred years before him, we better jump while the jumping is good.

Since when did conservatives when faced with their most Reagan like, best conservative, at the front of the primary pack and heading for victory, decide to block her, fight her nomination, and shift our efforts to a major contender like Huckabee or a Romney or even to some other lessor light that has no following like a Barbour, all in the name of stopping her?
