A dog that fought off a suicide bomber in Afghanistan, saving the lives of several US soldiers, was euthanized by mistake by animal shelter staff in Arizona. An investigation was underway Tuesday into why Target was put to sleep at the Pinal County Animal Care & Control center. An unnamed employee was placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures. The shepherd-mix dog was picked up last Friday after going missing from its owner Sgt. Terry Young's home in the San Tan Valley area, southeast of Phoenix. The dog, which was not microchipped or licensed with the county, was euthanized Monday.

They desperately wanted to hear it so they did.
If it was a police dog (which technically Target was)then there could be charges of negligent homicide here.
But no, as usual our military is sacrificed. Target saved Americans bottom line, this is arguably one of the worst things I have heard of.
Chips work great. Tags can be lost or the collar can break (hence lost dog) and stealing dogs is very rampant (ditch the collar).
A local dog was stolen and the vet who was doing work for the new "owners" automatically does a scan and found the discrepency.

no one does that here as callous as you propose
some here...myself included think it an odd telling of our culture when we place a greater emphasis on treatment of animals than babies
but that doesn’t mean we are careless about our pets.i have a dog...see my homepage
we just think innocent helpless humans should be at the top of the affection chain
instead we are treated to the right to kill the unborn as celebrated by some women and at the same time stiffer and stiffer penalties for anyone abusing animals...even for livestock by animal rights extremists
what happened to this pooch is sad and i wish it hadn’t happened
but yes...i think the calls for execution or 20 years in prison or yes...even on occasion some calls for just preemptive life or execution for a kid who kills a pet are bizarre considering we still kill 1 million babies a year without hesitation
how about quit killing babies and put animals and animal abuse punishment in a reasonable perspective?
like when I was a kid 45 years ago when our culture still had sanity...a time the new morality crowd think was all evil and racist and oppressive to women...and I reckon pets too..
as a side note...when a culture exalts animal value to the level of humans or better it is a “tell” on that culture same as homosexuality becoming normal....not saying to abuse them or sacrifice them..but we’ve sorta lost a reasonableness about it..in some quarters
i hunt too btw...another reason I’m keen on this...that is in their sights too
The poster made it clear.
Does anyone know if they make chips that are 24-7 readable with a GPS service like a cell phone or is it just the old bar code type where you can read the chip if you have the gear
a locatable chip would be great to find lost dogs...my vet only does the readable by a vet type
Yes. Get your pets RF chipped!!! BTW, do you need a warrant to track an RF chipped dog? I know you need one to track the owner, but what about the dog or cat? hmmmmmm
Did you actually read what he said? He said the “Just a Dog” crowd would be here soon. He was right.
He is not a member of the crowd, just predicting that they would be here soon.
Yes they do. I've have been on threads about the death of a pet and there are people here who think that caring about a pet, even a little, is a stupid waste of time.
Sad but true.
We got the dog from the shelter. I have no idea what chip they used.
The tags already got our dog back to our house. Right after we adopted her.
haha! okay... so your brain isn't working... got it...
I absolutely support that argument. I do the same to my dog. However, would the chlubs at that animal shelter have even bothered to run a scan for a chip?
well, I agree that is indeed callous if anyone says that
Several FReepers responded with disgust that anyone would help out "just a dog".
I'm a dog lover, and the proud daddy of 12 year old Shih Tsu, and a 2 year old German Shepard. My "boys" will never be "just dogs" to me.
My post was intended as ridicule toward those who I expected to post here and make light of the loss of this hero dog.
Hope this clears things up.
I do not approve of micro-chips on principle. I know that others have found this form of tracking to be beneficial, but it is not absolutely necessary.
Our family has owned well over 30 dogs in our lifetime, not including livestock, and our pet cats. Our felines were never in a situation involving their collars being snagged on fences, etc. Although, I will say that the cats we currently own have no collars. We live out in the wild; in an isolated location, so there is no risk of being run over, but they could be caught on brush or in a tree, so they don’t wear the collars.
It has been a rare occasion when one of our dogs ran away. As a matter of fact, I can only recall two occasions. Once, when we had just arrived home from the animal shelter w/our dog. He slipped through the rope and ran off. We managed to call him back shortly thereafter.
The other occasion occurred during a hunt. After waiting well after nightfall, then going home, we returned the next day to find our dog waiting on the t-shirt we left for him.
People have managed to take care of their pets w/out the devices, but it is a personal choice that provides owners with that added sense of security. I would venture to say that the micro-chip may even cause the owner to be neglectful knowing that if his/her pet should run off, they’ll be easily found.
I see neglectful owners all the time. They don’t bother putting their dogs on leashes or securing the kennel, the dogs runners, or fenced yard. We’ve never had that problem.
Every bit as clear as your lack of reading comprehension. You really should read a post before you respond to it.
tags help...but I’ve been thinking cause I have the sorta dog some hillbillies and hoodies like to steal to breed up their fighting dogs...I’m in middle TN...yes...it does happen..still
i get wary when I see them admiring my dog
I would like to get a traceable chip but am not sure if available.
If you’re going to advertise your own stupidity on a public forum, you should learn to read. You made a fool of yourself, and you still haven’t figured it out.
