President Obama's picture book for kids, Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters (Knopf, $17.99), pays tribute to 13 Americans whose traits he sees in his own children.

The 31-page book, for kids ages 3 and up, is filled with lyrical questions for Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9, opening with, "Have I told you lately how wonderful you are?"

The book, out Tuesday, is illustrated with Loren Long's paintings of the Obama girls and their dog, Bo, as well as the 13 famous Americans as kids and grown-ups.

The Indian names are entertaining. My suggestion: “Bows to Dictators”.

No, Custer wasn’t the sort of person we should herald.

Custer was a bit more complex than grade school history covers. He had some admirable qualities, which was why he got those brevet promotions to BG and then MG. He'd be hailed as a famous Union officer, a brilliant tactician and fierce fighter, if he'd been killed at the end of the Battle of Five Forks.

It is strange. During the Civil War, Custer would scout his enemy carefully and then attack fiercely and intelligently. If he took chances back then, it was understandable since a loss could mean losing the war. He could easily afford to pull back against the Indians and hit them a few days later with much better forces and with better geography.

His screw-ups at the Last Stand don’t really fit Custer’s style. By then he had gotten quite a head for fame, so maybe he had been talking up the upcoming battle with his attached correspondent and didn’t want to be seen retreating from a fight.

I would just add an "h" to Sitting Bull and call him that.

Add a well-placed “h” to Sitting Bull’s name.

It’s an honorific to denote the source of everything Obama says.

Indians were not citizens of America (the United States), by your loose definition, Costa Ricans are Americans, and Aztecs were American, that is not the context being used in this conversation.

Custer had many faults to be sure. He was rash, vain, and conteptious of the Indians, but he was no coward. He first gained attention at Gettysburg by leading his Wolverines in a headlong charge against Stewart’s far larger cavalry that was about to hit the Union in the rear at the same time Pickett was attacking the front. It so shocked and confused Stewart that he withdrew. Not the action of a coward.

I think that was Bill Clinton's Indian name; or was it "Forked Snake"?
