NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- When House Democrats return to Washington on Monday, a top priority will be putting a $250 dollar check in the mail to 58 million Social Security recipients.
Democrats plan to vote early in the lame-duck session on a bill that would provide Social Security recipients with a one-time payment, according to the office of Earl Pomeroy, a Democrat from North Dakota who authored the legislation.
The bill -- with a total cost of roughly $14 billion -- is designed to make up for another year without an increase in Social Security benefits.
In October, the federal government announced that Social Security beneficiaries will see no increase in their benefit checks in 2011. That will mark the second year in a row with no increase.

And pray tell - how are they going to pay for this year-end bribe to seniors?
stupid is as stupid does
do the democrats seeking to gut MEDICARE to pay for OBAMACARE think the support and pacification of senior citizens costs $250 a year?
apparently so
But the electon is over. Why now? Unless it’s an attempt to triangulate the newbie Congresspeople.
About the same effect as a fart in a hurricane, but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick...but not by much. Dear gubment, gimme da money!!
The Democrats want to put the Republicans on record as forcing seniors to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their dogs.
“pray tell - how are they going to pay for this year-end bribe to seniors?”
By letting the Bush “tax cuts” expire for “the rich”
It’s a cynical lame duck Congress Harry Reid/Pelosi trick to get the GOP to be forced to vote against a miserly stipend for the elderly by “refusing to compromise” on keeping “the Bush tax cuts for the rich”
I am a senior (a very conservative one) and I can tell you the bribe won't work.
Actually, the Democrats have a very real chance of losing senior support permanently as more is disclosed about how the Dem agenda is being funded by cuts to senior programs. The Dems want to transfer/re-distribute funds from senior programs to minorities (including illegal ones), without losing senior votes.
$250 will not make up for what these people will be losing under ObamaCare.
Put the $250 in perspective. It will NOT buy you two first class postage stamps a day for a year. Maybe a first class stamp and a postcard stamp a day but that’s all.
What a joke. How about if when a senior turns 75 they can finally stop paying school taxes. Property taxes are a huge strain on many seniors. Let the school teachers help pay for their benefits to fund this discount. In my state school teachers pay nothing for their health care, not for themselves or their families. Even if the spouse works and could get benefits from their work place they don’t because they can get it for free from their teacher spouse. And by 75 hasn’t a senior paid enough for public school teachers.
People on Social Security would rather see our country pulled back together than get a check for $250.00. That money will do nothing for them but put the country further in debt.
I love the smell of ‘rat desperation in the morning.
Another little known social security / Medicare issue. In 2009 the Medicare part B premium that seniors pay as their share of the Medicare insurance was $96.40 (for most people), in 2010 that premium was raised to $110.50, and in 2011 it will be set at $115.40. However those increases were not passed on to seniors because there was no social security COLA in 2010 or in 2011. If by chance there is a Social Security COLA in 2012, the first $19.00, plus what ever the 2012 increase is, will be immediately eaten by those premiums.
See old folks, the Democrats didn’t let you have your COLA but they will send you a check to make you love them.
Last time they did this our income was taxed for it.
Trying to buy off seniors again are we Hussein??!! Sorry, but it ain’t gonna work, pal.
Well, I am one of those old folks and I not only vote NO, but H*** NO! Stop it.
