Their ship lost power after an engine fire Monday and was adrift about 200 miles outside San Diego and 44 miles off the coast of Mexico.
At that distance from land, it was out of cell phone range for much of the ordeal. The fire left the ship without air conditioning, hot water or hot food. The casino was closed and, for a time, so were the bars. The swimming pool was off-limits because the pumps wouldn't work.
Mark and Ginger Kalin and their 9-year-old daughter Parker were on the cruise as part of a magicians' convention.

Wow....sounds a lot like life in Iraq. ;-)
Sounds a lot worse than what I went through during Hurricane Katrina, much less my two tours in Korea. Carnival should give each man, woman & child a million dollars and a pony.
“US Marines at Chosin Reservoir in The Korean War endured stench, cold food.
Happy Belated Veterans Day.
These folks on dry land oughta quit the whining and thank a nearby Veteran for enduring 10x more than what they had to go through for a few days.”
Thank you! My sentiments exactly.
My son (a USMC helo pilot) went through SERE training about 6 months ago. Although he would not go into details, he just mentioned that the training gave him a new appreciation of the mettle of our fighting men who have been imprisoned as POW’s.
Thank a Veteran. Do it whenever you can.
To hell with a pony! I would want a quinine Obama Unicorn!and a movie of the week and possible an option for my own reality show!
True enough....but our military is all volunteer. They know exactly what they're getting into. And tho small, they are paid to do it.
In the passengers's case, they were promised "sun, fun, booze, and sailing"...what they got was quite something else. Further, they had to pay (up front anyway) to be on the cruise.
But I suppose the msm will go about milking the issue for as long as there's "blood left in the water", then move on to the next topic they can editorialize.
I'm sure they'll cover the most rediculous of the lawsuits about to be brought against the cruise line. What self-respecting ambulance chaser could resist such a temptation???
They didn’t sign up for the military. They paid a lot of money for a supposedly enjoyable cruise.
They were supposed to have comfortable staterooms, swimming pools, plenty of food and a nice vacation.
They got a crappy experience that ruined their vacation.
How would you feel if your once in a lifetime trip was ruined like this and you were trapped on a ship without working bathrooms?
jaaa. I guess we’ll have to force all the cruise lines to use solar for ship power. :-)
I think a lot of people aren’t really taking this as seriously as they should. I’ve lived in the field for months on end and yeah, it’s dirty and the food is marginal, but at least I was getting paid. Imagine some possible scenarios: a couple attempting to rekindle their marriage spends a year coordinating vacation, working overtime to get time off, setting up grandma to watch the kids for a week, etc.; a family of fifteen, strewn all over the country, takes a family vacation to celebrate the terminally ill yet still mobile grandpa’s 85th birthday; a young soldier and his new bride on their fantasy trip two weeks before he deploys to Afghanistan. Some of these folks are not, regardless what steps the cruise line takes, be able to be “made whole”. I feel sorry for each and every person on that boat, and some of them more so...
I’m sure it wasn’t pleasant but these people are going to compensated for their ordeal. Their money will be refunded and a voucher for another cruise. Seems fair to me. Things happen.
They did pay for showers and warm food, while soldiers volunteered for their conditions.
That said, my favorite quotes from passengers were the ones who said they had a blast drinking through it, and the one who simply said “Stuff happens.” The guy who said “this was my first cruise and probably my last” came off as a whiner going for a free ticket, which they’ll all probably get anyway.
LMAO!!!
I want a pony...no, wait...I want the million dollars.
“Being a passenger on a ship is like being in gaol with the chance of drowining”
I can’t believe these ships don’t have some kind of back up power supply.
And I’ll guarantee that some of the folks here telling these people to buck up would be the first ones pissing there pants if they couldn’t get a hot shower or a cold drink...
Not be able to be ‘made whole’? I feel like I’m watching Oprah. And that ain’t a good feeling.
They’ll get some kind of compensation, then they can replan a vacation. Good God!
Could have been worse...would they have been rescued if it had been a mime convention cruise?
LOL......my thought exactly.
