Sen. Patty Murray has won a fourth term, riding a wave of strong Democratic support in King County to defeat Republican challenger Dino Rossi.
As of Thursday evening, Murray was leading Rossi by more than 45,000 votes, taking 51 percent to Rossi's 49 percent. That's up from a 14,000-vote lead on Election Day.
According to a Seattle Times analysis, Rossi would need to get about 54 percent of the estimated 591,000 uncounted ballots statewide to overcome Murray's lead.
But nearly 264,000 of those ballots are in King County. Murray's already commanding lead there has only expanded since Election Day. She took 68 percent of the 69,000 King County ballots counted Thursday.
To overcome King County's heavy support for Murray, Rossi would have to take about two-thirds of the remaining ballots in the rest of the state. So far he's received 53.2 percent of those non-King County votes.
That makes Rossi's task virtually impossible, even though hundreds of thousands of ballots remain to be counted statewide.

I was stationed at Fort Lewis from 1980-84 and it was just starting to show up as the retreat spot for the California liberals. But back then it was still a pretty neat place to live and work. Go to the woods for the still quiet reflections given to one by hunting or go to the city to party. Of course, as one who made his living "in the woods" you could most always find me in Seattle partying, unless it was Elk season. So to me, it's a real shame to see it go the way of Southern Kalifornia.
It is a beautiful area, though I find the traffic horrendous. (I have only been there on various visits.)
I think the Founders actually wanted the Senate to be more of a “consensus pick” than the House. However, it’s hard to imagine they could have foreseen that there would be these urban bubbles of political blocs, especially blocs based on government DEPENDENCY.
This is one reason why Walter Williams has suggested that it’s not adequate to look at it as only “no taxation without representation.” How about “no representation without taxation”?
Now, Williams doesn’t go so far as to say people who don’t pay taxes should be deprived of the vote. (Although the Founders did limit the vote to “stakeholders” in the economy.) But Williams does kick around the idea of people who pay taxes having MORE THAN ONE vote — perhaps even one vote for every X amount paid in taxes!
Think how that would change our ability to govern ourselves! If I can, I’ll find one of the links where this was discussed.
“What I am saying is that Dino Rossi has been down this road before..”
Dino should have been a popular governor in his 2nd term. The RATs stole that from us - plain and simple. Dino’s done well to keep his good attitude - and I do wish he were more of a fighter.
Linking Voting Rights with Taxes Paid
Does the U.S. Need to Split Along Political Lines? This thread, in particular, has some great discussion in the comments.
I read that, as of this morning, King County still has over 320,000 ballots left to count. Some of these ballots were in the hands of the election department a week ago.
How do you spell incompetence?
ditto’s to everything you wrote.
Agreed. It was my understanding that he had conceded. Guess I misunderstood. Fox News was reporting that Patty Murray was returning to the Senate for her 4th term. Will watch closely.
On the whole, I guess it's just my frustration about Washington, Oregon, and California being so out of touch with the rest of the nation.
They are projecting. They should actually try counting the votes. With mail-in ballots in Washington, it usually takes a while to get them all together, even the ones that seem to come out of somebody’s closet at the most opportune time to be included. Rossi shouldn’t concede until the votes have been counted and certified.
Then again it is also possible that no GOP candidate can win major office in the Marxist states.
It is scary really! Being conservative in a Dark Blue State!
Yes, and I can only add that being a conservative business owner compounds the problem. Don't know how much longer I can afford to live in California. Actually starting to make plans to leave the state ...and taking my business with me.
One more of Bush’s failures was to not address the fraud that is so rampant.
Stop the fraud, take the GOP, then take the country. Folks are, especially out here, getting demoralized..but we really need to take a step back, square up, and starting landing body blows. This is still America.
Since you use the name "SeaHawkFan" you are no doubt familiar with the term, "Armchair Quarterback."
No doubt we could all learn from that. What office will you be filing for?
I’m not a Seahawk fan. Just a screen name selected because it has nothing to do with me, and I no longer live in WA, but do follow what’s going on there.
A good target for investigation.
Governor. I’m sure I can count on your vote.
You’ll have to earn it...Gregoire sends someone over to wash my car every Saturday.
I don’t quite get why Seattle is so liberal, either. In theory it would appear to me to be a city that could potentially be conservative.
The weather is far from perfect (exactly what are Calilfornians seek there?). The outdoorsman has a home there. It’s one of the most predominantly white major cities in the country (i.e. doesn’t have a massive black population that is going to vote Democrat even if the (D)’s are threatening to take their first born children).
That said, it’s decidedly liberal, has a massive moronic hippy population, and one of the most depressing lack of viable churches I’ve ever seen. I loved the beauty of Western Washington, but really, the local populace just brings the place down even more than the cloud cover in the winter months.
