A Sea of Broken Glass
LonePalm | 11/2/2010 | LonePalm

Back in October of 2000, in my first post on Free Republic, I coined the term "Broken Glass Republican" as an indication of my determination to vote against the Democrats for their mishandling of the USS Cole incident.

The term was picked up by Byron York who got it from his sister, a FReeper, over dinner and published in National Review. Peggy Noonan then used it in her article The Meaning of the Vote Democracy is a blessing--especially for "Broken Glass Republicans". It was also used repeatedly by Rush on the air. Attaching "Broken Glass" to some group name has become a reference to the intensity of that group's dedication.

I have been seeing reports of high voter turnout this morning and think that this will help us rather than hurt us.

I live in the NJ-6 congressional district. My congresscritter is Frank Pallone, a member of the House Progressive Caucus and one of the authors of 0bamacare.

As a purely anecdotal bit of evidence, I have noticed a much larger number of signs for Anna Little than Frank Pallone. Until very recently, I had not seen a single Pallone sign in a person's yard while most of the Little signs had been in people's yards.

Sunday, I saw a Pallone TV ad. The ad vilely misrepresented Little's positions and did nothing to portray Pallone positively.

This district is heavily Gerrymandered to keep Pallone in office. It is a long narrow district that is less than 200 yards wide at one point. The fact that Frank Pallone thinks he needs to run TV ads attacking Anna Little is illustrative of how much trouble the Democrats are in.

The usual adjectives, Tsunami, Teanami, Earthquake, etc. are likely to prove woefully in adequate to describe the results of today's election.

Pallone is well past his due date.

It’s the best way to describe this election. Thanks!

I specifically chose to stop voting for any Democrats after going to Bosnia in 1998.

The Republicans fought the Bosnia deployment up until the day that troops were on the ground, then shut up and voted the funds the troops needed.

In Iraq, the Democrats were vocal in their support of Bush's invasion, but the moment the troops got on the ground, started finding ways to defund it without fanfare.

I will stop voting before I would vote for a Democrat. Or I would run myself if the ballot was empty..

In 2000 I was a broken glass Republican. This time, I voted last week, so NOTHING could keep me from voting.

How do you know you were the first? (I’ve often thought I had coined terms to find out I wasn’t the first).

I corresponded with Byron York via e-mail.

After reading my first post, he credited me coining the term since my post predated him hearing it from his sister over Sunday dinner.

If you can find anything in print prior to 10/10/2000, I will gladly concede. In the very least, I independently coined the term.

I got gerrymandered into Payne’s district a few years back. For the first time he has opposition. I can’t wait to see what happens.

I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.
Vince Lombardi

Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.
Sun Tzu

We are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of Nature has placed in our power... the battle, sir, is not to the strong alone it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave.
Patrick Henry

If the battle for civilization comes down to the wimps versus the barbarians, the barbarians are going to win.
Thomas Sowell

In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten, then he who continues the attack wins.
Ulysses S. Grant

The whole course of human history may depend on a change of heart in one solitary and even humble individual - for it is in the solitary mind and soul of the individual that the battle between good and evil is waged and ultimately won or lost.
M. Scott Peck

Fighting wars is not so much about killing people as it is about finding things out. The more you know, the more likely you are to win a battle.
Tom Clancy

We voted absentee ballot last week, and there was no broken glass in our kitchen with a glass of wine for my trophy wife and a micro beer for me.

Our younger relatives and friends keep telling us of friends, co workers and their neighbors jumping off the 0HaHa bus and voting republican across the nation. If their observations are nationwide an correct, this could be a tsunami change in DC for our side.

I voted early this morning, NJ-8. Then while driving my normal route I noticed that many Straten signs were thrown down on the ground and in their place were signs for Pascrell.
