[history]
A federal judge in North Carolina ruled Saturday that voters must be warned touch-screen voting machines are sensitive and poll workers will need to keep detailed records of complaints about the machines during next week's elections.
The temporary order issued by Judge Malcolm Howard stemmed from a lawsuit filed by the state Republican Party against the State Board of Elections a day earlier.

He also ordered that all records associated with the machines be preserved. That's called "evidence" in legal lingo.

Good for him. Judges don’t like to get mixed up in elections but this is a good ruling. He must be a pretty good lawyer.

This is why electronic voting machines MUST print out your votes and allow you to view them through a window so that you KNOW that your votes are cast correctly. If the votes are not correct, you and the election judge can void it and the votes are electronically subtracted from the total and you vote again.

Excellent ruling!
Our county doesn't use the touch screen machines. We use the ones where you complete the broken line with a black marker and then feed it into a machine when you are done. I don't recall ever having complaints about them in the 15 years I've lived here. Wonder why all of our counties in NC can't have the same machines?

We fill in the oval and feed them into the scanner.
In 08 there was a single touch screen machine there but so few people used it they never brought it back.

Board officials have disputed the Republican claims, saying the lawsuit was intended to erode voter confidence and any issues during early voting were isolated and quickly fixed. Ummm...if there were problems that were fixed then that indeed means there were problems that may happen again. No mention of what caused the problems but, hey, we're supposed to just believe they are gone and couldn't possibly happen again. /sarc

Good for that judge. The NC Secretary of State (a liberal Democrat) has a smarmy reply to the Republican complaint posted on the SOS website, noting how disingenuous the Republicans are for "trying to imply this is a widespread problem that favors the Democrats" or something like that.
And of course stating (as the Rat SOS in Nevada did too) that there is no evidence whatsoever of any fraud, and the problem with the voting machines was simply due to the Republican voters "brushing" the screen the wrong way.
Yeah. That must be it.

Why not a receipt with a running tally for your vote and all votes cast?
That would end fraud completely, no?

As long as the machines are in service, we’re screwed. They should have been ordered out of service.
The GOP should have tested and inspected every machine well before early voting started. As usual, the GOP is a day late and a dollar short. They are so lame, it’d be funny if it wasn’t so serious.

Same here in Florida.
To: mykdsmom
We use the same method here, works great and I never hear complaints. Don’t know why everyone doesn’t since these electronic machines are too easy to tamper with.
To: Palmetto Patriot
Since most vote fraud is committed by the left, eliminating computerized voting machines should be a conservative political priority.
Will this be the election that teaches the public about the risks inherent to computerized voting?

Thanks for posting this. Corrupt elections are becoming the norm after Acorn in the last election. They need to address this now to help head off more of this in 2012.

Hence the reason for the printout. 10.00 bucks worth of gas comes with a printout, why not an election.
