The wishbone went away because the NFl continued to view it as disruptive technology; nobody ever figured it out or solved it. You still have to be able to throw the ball well enough to back defenses out of nine and ten man fronts but Alabama learned to do that and the Naval Academy seems able to do that and they blew a major college football team out of a bowl game last winter, which is theoretically impossible. Navy is basically playing Bear Bryant’s vision of the wishbone with the two halfbacks close to the line to act like flankers on pass plays and the triple option looking a bit like an end around. It’s the only situation I’ve ever seen where an amateur version of a sport outgrew the pro version.
