(NPR) Stations Inundated With Complaints About Williams’ Firing
WBUR ^ | 10/21/2010 | Andrew Phelps (@andrewphelps)

Posted on 10/21/2010 3:09:13 PM PDT by Responsibility2nd

WBUR has received more than 30 calls and a slew of e-mails from listeners to complain about the firing of NPR news analyst Juan Williams, and three people have received refunds for their donations.

That number might not sound like a lot, but it is meaningful — rarely do people make good on threats to cancel their support.

Member stations around the country — many of them in the middle of fundraising this week — live on the front lines. We get credit and, in this case, blame for NPR’s decisions. Many listeners don’t understand the distinction between the member station (WBUR) and the network (NPR).

WBUR, of course, played no part in the decision to fire Williams.

NPR has created a special website for member stations with talking points, contact information for media and listener inquiries and a link to NPR’s ethics guidelines.

NPR says it is so inundated with complaints, the NPR.org “Contact Us” page has crashed.

I have contacted my reps in DC and demanded that taxpayer funding be STOPPED for NPR. I’ve had enough of this use of MY money to support a biased media group!

Maybe we have all gotten sick of this too...and now have an event that will be used to do just that!

Tell your folks in Congress too...

NPR CEO Vivian Schiller: "...this has nothing to do with Fox News or his particular views of Muslims."

She is also sorry NPR did this while most public radio stations are in the middle of their fall pledge drives.

You have to love the timing of this! LOL

Actually...skip NPR HQ’s and go to your local NPR station. Let them know that you’ve had enough of NPR’s management team at the top, and refuse to listen to their shows in general.

I did earlier today....AND I also blame George Soros for the firing of Juan Williams. I too am nervous when Muslims in their garb board my flights....often refusing to sit were they are supposed to...they like me fearful. I wonder if George Soros who is stealthily devaluing the dollar is doing so by buying up GOLD....so many ads to buy GOLD make me wonder..............

This is really a good example of a liberal “knee jerk” reaction.

The stupid woman fired him without considering the possible ramifications.

Yes! It is the local stations that need the money! Starve them until they are off the air!

My email to npr.org from last night.

Firing Juan Williams is an affront to the first amendment. Mr. Williams didn't make the comment on your station. Soros' millions has entered your veins. I will be contacting the new congress to urge that they stop funding npr. People will be enraged when they wake up to this news.

I didn’t think about this. This is another piece of the whole holistic picture of liberal PC.

Even liberals are getting tired of it. I think even liberals are pining for the days when you could freely speak your mind. I sense a backlash will result and it could be felt at the polls.

Wow. Pretty interesting. NPR is to public radio stations what ABC is to ABC radio affiliates. A public radio station depends on programming from NPR for much of its natinal news content (All Things Considered, Morning Edition, etc.), while also having local shows.

However, money raised from on-air pledge drives is what supports individual stations; the NPR programming the station airs is paid for by government funding and, if I remember correctly, by private grants from major private foundations.

I worked at a very popular public radio station for years, and can tell you that the loyalty of public radio supporters is very strong. That so many are turning against NPR is profound.

Obama said “Williams acted stupidly.” Matthews said “I get a tingle up my leg whenever I listen to NPR.” Michelle Obama wanted NPR to lose “some weight.” Olbermaniac said it was O’Reilly’s fault.

Just got off the phone with my local NPR (again). Goofing on them is so much fun.

We went round and round. Finally I asked if they fired Juan Williams ‘cause he was black? LOL I think i heard someone’s head exploded.

I would love to call them and tell them that but I haven’t listened to them for at least 5 years. I do miss Benny Hill tho.

Just sent them a message thanking them for firing Juan, as it will be their loss and a boost to Juan’s career.
