When college presidents and academic administrators pay their usual obeisance to "diversity" you know they are talking first and foremost about race.

Check around - admission standards are lowered for Blacks; they’re actually RAISED for Asians.

Diversity may mean non-White to you; it means Black to everyone else in the United States.

You’re right that there’s no reason to apologize. I’m sure you did work hard. Besides, the fact that a student might qualify under college “diversity” doesn’t mean that student actually did receive a helping hand.

See for yourself. I was just looking into colleges last night. And I noticed that most colleges boast about their "diverse" student body when a large number of their students are Asian, Hispanic, or women. Newsweek ranks colleges, and it counts "gay" as diversity. I'm serious. Everyone except "white straight" males counts as "diversity".

Check it yourself very quickly: An article posted here yesterday linked to Newsweek's college rankings. Take a look at its rankings for "The 25 Most Diverse Schools". You can see for yourself that most of the schools are considered "diverse" because they have a large number of students who are Asian (or from outside the U.S.):

Further clarifying post #23:

As stated in my first post, EVERYONE who is “non-white” is counted under “diversity” - Asian, black, Hispanic, etc.

FTR, I agree that it’s unfair. It’s also insulting if you happen to fall under the “diversity” category. I don’t want these policies in place, either.

I’m just pointing out that “Asian Americans” are given minority status, too. That doesn’t mean every person of Asian descent wants that status. It just means: (1) if you’re Asian, you do qualify as a “minority” if you apply for a federal tuition grant; (2) schools do count Asian Americans as “minorities”; and (3) the federal government does target the Asian community with special grants and programs.

So... your sources are college catalogues and Newsweek, and you expect me to consider that means anything???

Come on - how old are you....?

What are your sources? Internet blogs? ;-)

Read my post 24. Here's information direct from the federal government to back it up. Here are two links to the Dept. of Ed. showing that colleges with a minimum of 10% Asian students qualify for special funds:

AANAPISI

CCRAA

Here are some examples of schools that qualified:

http://www.successatsouth.org/

designated by the U.S. Department of Education as an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI). This initiative contributes to South’s efforts of achieving high student success rates among our high rates of student diversity. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students are the college’s largest group of students of color. . . . a two-year, $2.4 million federal grant to support student retention and success, with special focus on Asian American and Pacific Islander students. . . . The U.S. Department of Education grant is designed to improve the retention, transfer and graduation rates of underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students.

And here's another example:

http://www.aast.umd.edu/grant.html

So, as I've been saying, Asian students are counted as "diversity" and included under the fed gov's "minorities" category, along with many other groups.

I do have one correction to make on my post 24, though: It turns out, this is wrong:

if you’re Asian, you do qualify as a “minority” if you apply for a federal tuition grant

According to the Dept. of Ed, the fed gov doesn't give financial aid to students based on race. So, I guess that line wasn't quite right.

Come on - how old are you....?

Old enough. I have a teen nearing college age. That's why I've been looking at information about colleges.

For the record, I think the gov't should stop categorizing people according to "race" altogether. I also don't think grants should be given to people based on low income. The only thing gov't should do is: If there's a real need for (for example) engineers or doctors, the gov could give tuition grants to those who qualify and agree to work within that field in a certain spot (a state, region) upon graduation for a certain length of time. The gov shouldn't be handing out money to pay for any major that any student chooses, just because the student can't afford to pay for it.

But, I don't fault anyone for taking the money. If it's being offered to you, well...

You really love those conventional definitions of ‘diversity’ - Newsweek, college publicity offices, government stats...

How about just opening your eyes and ears and using your head for something beside a hat rack.

‘I’m not wasting any more time with you.’

Excellent idea; take your delusions elsewhere.
