In an exclusive interview with Battle 10, Republican senate candidate Christine ODonnell talked about her remarks made earlier this morning that the words separation of church and state are not present in the Constitution.
It seems the AP and others are twisting it out of context, ODonnell said. What I was trying to prove is that my opponent does not know the First Amendment.
What our constitution prevents is government establishing a religion, but it also says that it wont prohibit free exercise thereof, argued ODonnell.
ODonnells original comment was made to address a question asked in a debate this morning about whether local public schools could teach creationism. Talking to Battle 10, ODonnell said that if the local school board approves, there was nothing unconstitutional about a public school teaching the intelligent design theory.
Hes [Coons] saying the school board has no right do that, that the First Amendment prevents that, she said. My position was thats not true. It gives them the freedom to teach that if thats what local schools want.
And he said federal government should stop that, ODonnell added. He very clearly said he would prevent local schools from teaching intelligent design.
ODonnell stressed that preventing schools from the possibility of teaching intelligent design would violate the First Amendment clause that Congress could not prohibit the free exercise thereof of religion. He [Coons] forgot to quote [that] part, she said.
In a statement, campaign manager Matt Moran said, In this mornings WDEL debate, Christine ODonnell was not questioning the concept of separation of church and state as subsequently established by the courts. She simply made the point that the phrase appears nowhere in the Constitution. It was in fact Chris Coons who demonstrated his ignorance of our countrys founding documents when he could not name the five freedoms contained in the First Amendment.
ODonnell also told Battle 10 that race was going very well. Arguing that Coons would be a rubber stamp for the Obama/Reid agenda, ODonnell said, I dont think people want more of the same coming from Washington.
Christine is right and Coons is a typical liberal atheist asshat.
FYI
However, this is not an issue that is going to win over DE independents. On this issue, she is only speaking to the conservative Delawareans who are already willing to crawl over broken glass to vote for her.
She needs to forget about this distracting argument and focus on the fact that Coons spent all his time in local DE office either raising taxes, trying to raise taxes more or helping his cronies line their pockets with fat pensions paid for by the DE taxpayer.
They really are not smart enough to realize how stupid they are.
Reminds me of a quote:
"The difference between genius and stupidity is genius has limits"
Christine O’Donnell was awesome on the matter of the First Amendment. It is staggering idiocy among the orthodoxy that they churn out little apparatchik law students by the dozens who are clueless. When they graduate and can’t find a job in Coons’ workers paradise maybe they’ll get a clue.
In the interim, as an old timer, it’s encouraging for me personally to know that there are younger people who do have a clue, like Christine. No matter how this plays out, I hope she sticks around in politics. She and Sarah and Rand and Michele and Marco and LtCol West and all the other tea party patriots have got the right stuff.
But for this post, God bless Christine for standing tall and proud and telling these nitwit lefties what’s what. But for people like Christine O’Donnell we’d all be living in the gulag.
Michael Medved spent several minutes - till I turned him off - declaring that Christine is dumb as rocks on this issue. He is the idiot and this is one more reason I skip his show.
It’s called Article 3.
“I am hoping Obama is so upset he smokes 5 packs of cigs and wheezes himself to sleep at 5 am.”
LOL,pburgh01!
Excellent comments, PaleoBob.
Tagline officially stolen ... lol
Sure it does. It provides for a supreme, unaccountable judiciary empowered to interpret the Constitution, whose opinions carry the full force of Constitutional law, without appeal.

That's true. She fell right into a trap. And she didn't even do a good job of it. Maybe had she said, "Where are THE WORDS 'separation of church and state' in the Constitution." But even then, as you say, she's preaching to the very small choir of DE conservatives, and showing her hand to moderates who won't understand or like the point she was ineptly trying to make. And she's ignoring Article 3. She might have tried making it an argument about judges, but that's tired at this point.
She needs to forget about this distracting argument and focus on the fact that Coons spent all his time in local DE office either raising taxes, trying to raise taxes more or helping his cronies line their pockets with fat pensions paid for by the DE taxpayer.
It's too late. She's so done.
She just muddled it some more. The first amendment prohibts the U.S. Congress from establishing religion, not “government.” Essentially, she has shifted to the postion outlined by Coons.
Awesome? In the debate she accurately said that the Constitution does not prohbit “government” from establishing religion, not she says that it does.
As I was channel surfing last night it seemed all the usual sudpects in the LSM were having a field day declaring how stupid Christine is. I’d bet a paycheck that she knows more than any of them overall about the Constitution.
I can remember being at the Md. State Fair in the summer of 1964, a 13 year-old pie-eyed volunteer selling cans of “Goldwater” for 25 cent contributions—but I don’t think I was ever prouder to be a conservative American than I was when I heard Christine stand up and speak to truth to the Marxist orthodoxy yesterday. I just loved it.
Since she is only down 5-8% I wouldn’t count her out by any stretch. Polls are useless until 24 hrs prior to the vote and even then this year is impossible to predict.
Pray for America
Same here! I SO hope she wins, just so I can call his show and rub it in his face! With ‘friends’ like Medved, who needs enemies?
