The Democrats are on the verge of a historical defeat
TheWashington Times ^ | Oct. 14, 2010 | The Washington Times

The Democrats are on the verge of a historical defeat. Just two years ago, the party seemed to be forging a majority governing coalition. It controlled Congress, key governorships and many state legislatures. And with the 2008 election of President Obama, the Democrats occupied the White House.

Democrats had a golden opportunity to build an enduring pragmatic liberalism upon the Republican rubble.

They blew it. Instead of focusing on economic recovery, job creation and winning the war on terrorism, the Obama administration used its massive congressional majorities to expand government power.

Mr. Obama is a radical ideologue. He chose socialism over pragmatism, remaking America rather than reviving it.

Yet, as the media coronated him the new leftist emperor, his subjects grew restless under Democratic imperial rule. Mr. Obama has alienated Middle America for one simple reason: His policies are bleeding the country white. They are breaking the nation's back.

Why does this wording remind me of reports that the Germans has occupied Paris?

"Historic" is definitely correct versus "historical" in this case. There is no might about it.

And google pulls up some very modern documents that use "an historic". Victor Davis Hanson used it recently in the title of an article published recently in National Review for example.

"An historic" is a less common usage than "a historic" but it isn't a pre-Webster archaism either. The reason it has persisted despite breaking the rule of using "an" only when the "h" is silent is that it helps distinguish the phrase "a historic" from the word "ahistoric", which means just the opposite.

I expect some very dirty tricks in the next few weeks.

Everyone I talk to thinks the local Dims incinerated the Houston voting machine warehouse in a bid to steal the election in Texas.

Harris County is so big, they might be able to swing the State, if they can stuff enough ACORN ballots into empty ballot boxes -- if they can keep us off balance so we have to use paper ballots.

Local Tea Partiers caught one union drone with phonied-up voter registrations, enough to swing the Houston vote.

Guys, we must not get overconfident. Vote like you are the only one voting. Crawl over that broken glass. If you have a few extra dollars, give it to a conservative that needs a few dollars.

Excellent post! I have hit the maximum legal limit for political donations and can no longer give money, just time, but this is not over until the polls close, the ballots are counted, and the frivolous and fraudulent lawsuits are all dismissed. Until then, we have to do everything we possibly can to crush the Dem power grab while we are still a free country.

His policies are bleeding the country white.

That’s an odd way of putting it....

Marxist, fascist, corporatist...all statists. Whatever you want to call them, on a spectrum with totalitarianism on the far left and anarchy on the far right, they reside well left of center.

Someone (I think here on FR) mentioned the Republican candidates should spend the next 2 weeks putting Obama signs up all over next to their Dem opponents signs.

That would be very effective.

Rasmussen today puts the House gain at 55, just 8 more than in 1966. A gain of 55 won’t change spit in Washington. I don’t even know if a gain of 80 would make much difference. There has to be wholesale change to survive.

NCLA: “Blame belongs squarely upon the American people.”

Well, I have to agree, but I think it’s more negligence on their part than evil intent. Millions of people still get their news almost exclusively from broadcast news and the major newspapers. Couple that with Marxist brainwashing in our colleges, and it’s no wonder that so many voters were conned. It happened with Carter, and he had vastly more leadership experience than Obama. Now a new generation gets to learn a life lesson the hard way—electing leftists is bad for the country.

I’m on this thread for my service to the neighborhood grammarnazi watch under the authority of Grammarnation, and I am here to help you. What is “odd” about saying he’s bleeding the country white?

Hmmm, I wonder how many stories we will see in the Partisan Socialist Media predicting “The End of the Democratic Party” like they have concerning Republicans in any cycle in which they have a set back?

Zero? Yea, I’ll go with that.

Foul deeds are being planned, that is certain. We still occasionally have to hear the myth that Al Gore won the election in 2000 but had it stolen. The truth is that Gore tried to steal the election and failed.

Absolutely, and nobody knows it better than the 'RatMedia who go around repeating the "selected, not elected" canard.

In further fact, the press came up with their own recount and did it six different ways, trying to get Gore to a majority in Florida. Five of their six recount versions gave it to Bush, but they persisted with the chanting and the lies.
