In August, I asked "Why is Obama Administration blocking import of surplus rifles?," citing "problems" that were described as "ambiguous" being the reason a sale previously approved by the State Department had been halted.
The ambiguity has now been cleared up. A Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives advisory titled "Effect of Granting Retransfer Authority" shows us the rationale behind the move. As the Examiner.com "upgrade" no longer allows content providers to embed objects, I must refer you offsite for the complete document. But in the interests of discussing the report, I have also broken it up into numbered graphics (see slide show in left margin):
1. Here it is in black and white:
"...ATF believes the importation of these firearms, particularly the M1 carbine rifle and M-1911 pistol, poses a threat to public safety in the U.S."
This is the same rationale used in model-specific "assault weapons" bans--the type of gun is somehow deemed relevant, even though untold numbers of such firearms are already peaceably owned in this country, and even though no supporting evidence for this conclusion exists beyond agenda-promoting speculation.
2. We'll see an increase in imported firearms. Lots of them. So?
3. Prices will go down due to supply and demand. Their source? That noted threat to public safety in the U.S., the Civilian Marksmanship Program, authorized by Title 36 U. S. Code, 0701-40733 and a key supplier of "surplus military firearms, ammunition, parts and other items," provided you meet their eligibility requirements. The other apparent concern is the law does not empower ATF to collect "end user" information--so apparently any privately owned firearm with information not so collected is now a domestic threat? Maybe the solution is to "end the gun show loophole" and authorize licensing and registration?

And now today when engaged in combat where the current chief executive says that victory isn’t necessarily the objective you get a shiny new medal for “courageous restraint.”
Isn’t M1 Carbine ammo very difficult to come by??
I’m drooling over the idea of getting an original 1911 in good condition for cheap.
No they are carbines.
Didn’t a bunch of AK-47’s come on in under Clinton??
Im am SO with you on this one. The ATF is easily the MOST worthless fed LE org ever. Altho the FBI and DEA aren’t that far behind them. I propose the ATF is a far greater threat to public safety than any number of imported rifles.
You can find it on a regular basis as reloads, new is hard to find. Reloads go for $200-$250 for a case of 500 rounds.
Not really. Cheaper than Dirt has it for less than 50 cents a round. They had (currently out of stock) a 500 round box of it for about $210. Currently, the cheapest I can find the milsurp .30-06 for my Garand is exactly 50 cents a round not including shipping, from the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
They still make .30 carbine ammo in quantity. On average it costs about as much as bigger handgun ammo. Gun show trips for bulk ammo are highly recommended.
...dogs and cats sleeping together...
Dunno ‘bout “worst.” I’ve shot a M1 Carbine a bit and they’re pleasant to shoot and fairly accurate. They ain’t big game rifles, though.
Getting mixed reports. When I first heard about this issue a month or two ago, it was M1 Garands. Now I see both Garand and Carbine, or Carbine alone. Not sure whose reporting is correct.
Didnt a bunch of AK-47s come on in under Clinton??
I have no idea.
“The M1 Carbine is still a mighty fine distance weapon with lots of firepower.”
The carbine fires a .30 calibre pistol round, and was intended to be issued to officers and members of crew served weapons, radio operators etc instead of a pistol.
Long distance? lots of firepower? lolololol
The carbine can be very useful in street fighting for people unable to have sub-machine guns, grenades and high-capacity shotguns.
I would not be surprised to find firearm manufacturer’s lobbyists behind this.
Lots of businesses cry about the gvt, until they want their special treatment.
“Didnt a bunch of AK-47s come on in under Clinton??”
Yep...and if I remember correctly Senator Diane Fienstein’s husband had ties with the chinese and was the one importing the AK-47 look alikes that Diane is so fond of holding up at press conferances and calling for more gun control legislation.....ya just gotta love the lunacy of the left/s
You are correct. Wang Jun(a Chinese arms dealer and military officer) met with clintoon just after the assault weapon ban was passed. I would assume that a significant campaign donation or bribe was paid and clintoon gave him an exemption to the ban and allowed a boat load of them to come in.
One of my favorite questions to clintoon supporters is “Why did clintoon meet with Wang Jun in the White House?” Of course they don’t have a clue.
Obviously, i was confusing it with the M-1 Garand.
