The exodus of senior aides from the White House continued as Gen James Jones, Barack Obamas head of National Security, resigned.
His departure, which comes a week after Rahm Emanuel, the chief of staff, resigned, removes one of the few senior officials not belonging to the US presidents coterie of long-time advisers.
Brought in originally for his vast experience and independent voice, it had been clear for some time that the former Nato supreme commander had failed to gel with the presidents inner circle.
Gen Jones is being replaced by one of those close aides, his former deputy Thomas Donilon.
Announcing the change in the White House Rose Garden, Mr Obama paid tribute to Gen Joness long service to the nation, but did little more than praise him as a steady voice in the Situation Room as National Security Adviser. He however described Mr Donilon as a probing intellect.
A veteran of six Democratic presidential campaigns and a former senior State Department official, Mr Donilon is steeped in the workings of government and was an adviser to Mr Obamas presidential campaign.
His detractors regard him as too political for a job whose main tasks are assessing and balancing information from different government departments, and then enforcing the presidents policy.
According to a new book by Bob Woodward, Robert Gates, the Defence Secretary, remarked that Mr Donilon would be a disaster if ever promoted because he did not appreciate or understand the military sufficiently. Mr Gates said yesterday he had a very good working relationship with Mr Donilon.

‘Rats deserting a sinking ship.
But you’d think the just for PR purposes you would send out the word - no more public resignations until after the election. So far - a lot of these are positions which do not require Senate confirmation. I could imagine that if he was going to replace cabinet officials he might want to do it now - so the confirmation hearings would be in the lame duck sessions - during which he could try to sneak someone by.
“A veteran of six Democratic presidential campaigns and a former senior State Department official, Mr Donilon is steeped in the workings of government and was an adviser to Mr Obamas presidential campaign.”
...and this background qualifies Donilon as successor to General Jones for National Security Adviser, right?
Obama’s house of race cards continues to fall.
Epic Failure in less than 2 years....
AA doesn’t work, neither does treason.
THAT'S the job description of the National Security Advisor???
Jim Jones, while a democrat, is a good Marine and a good man. He was the one that libtards pointed to when covering for Mr. Skittles lack of credentials. Now we have a FNMA lawyer handling national security. Why don’t I feel secure?
The whole thing is scary. Our country run by his closet (or closest) Commie Cabal friends.
I pray to God, literally, that someone steps it up and starts handing out subpoenas soon.
I really do believe Obama’s acts border on Treason.
Too many members of his Cabinet don’t want to be prosecuted and strung up with him. Obama is doing HIDEOUSLY if his fellow Dems are jumping ship. Even when Clinton was impeached, the Dems stood by him.
I have always said that any military man who is a democrat has a self hate complex. Jones is plainly stupid for thinking any senior officer would be accepted in the inner cirlce of Obama’s military hating advisors. These people have made a career of bashing and trashing the military and nothing has changed. Jones sold his soul for a few pieces of Obama’s silver and got what he deserved.

Thanks for defending General Jones. He was my Company Commander as a 1stLt in 1969 and an outstanding leader.
My gut feel is that he took the job in this administration due to a strong desire to serve the nation yet again.
Semper Fi,
Nobody wants to be near Obama when the civil war starts!
Is Thomas Donilon’s middle name Mohammed or Lenin?
“Rats deserting a sinking ship.”
No, he’s replacing his operatives with patsies who will take the fall.
What National Security?
You always read this kind of stuff when White House staffers leave for other positions, especially in Republican administrations. What really shows me that Zero has a big problem is that this is coming from the leftist media.
