"MENTOR, Ohio – Sladjana Vidovic's body lay in an open casket, dressed in the sparkly pink dress she had planned to wear to the prom. Days earlier, she had tied one end of a rope around her neck and the other around a bed post before jumping out her bedroom window.

The 16-year-old's last words, scribbled in English and her native Croatian, told of her daily torment at Mentor High School, where students mocked her accent, taunted her with insults like "Slutty Jana" and threw food at her.".....

I agree that there is a serious parenting problem here with the kids who are bullies. My guess is that the parents of these kids are bullies themselves, so their kids model that behavior.

However, in my own experience at high school, many of the teachers turned a blind eye to the bullying. I saw many kids get their heads slammed into lockers and get hit and the teachers would be standing right there and they would say nothing.

In my school, the bullies tended to be the ‘popular’ kids and they were friends with the teachers, who in turn wanted to be friends with the popular kids. So, they’d remain silent. I even confronted a teacher about the fact that they were standing there while it happened, and the teacher unemotionally and coldly claimed that they “did not see anything”. To me, the teachers end up being the enablers of the bad behavior.

My friends and I got tired of seeing kids get bullied and decided to become the people that “bullied the bullies”. If the parents and teachers weren’t going to do anything, we felt someone needed to.

I just feel sorry that these kids had to go through this and no one had their back. What a sad commentary on today’s youth.

"Is it truly philosophy, or is it attitude? Philosophy would mean to me that it’s by design, and I don’t give the Left whom run our public schools much credit for such design, so I believe their natural arrogance as attitude supersedes philosophy in this case.

In 1963, the current goals of communism were read into the congressional record.

Among these were:

"17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks."

"25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV."

"28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."

I would submit that while the precise fruits may not have been foreseen, the trees were planted quite deliberately. Now, do I believe that the current principal and administration of this school are card carrying communists? Probably not, but they themselves were most likely indoctrinated in public schools, and at higher levels of academia, belong to a union that reinforces that value system (or lack thereof) and simply act accordingly. They are in fact, useful idiots who are unwittingly creating conditions ripe for creeping communism. The lives of these children are merely regarded as collateral damage.

But if it were indeed a matter of life and death for the kid, why didn’t he just stop acting that way rather than kill himself?

I don't have an answer for that. Can you change your personality? We are all individuals with unique personalities but to torment someone day in and day out for not conforming to what someone else considers normal is not right.

We all grew up with someone who was just a little off from the rest of us...I never thought of tormenting them to the point of suicide

Now I did say: “...the parents of the bullies need to be held accountable...”

I know about the sh*t-holes these kids come from - both of my children are adopted - one came froma mother who had no logisitics and the other from a neglectful family...I there with you on that - and my wife and I are doing a little part in helping that area...

But back to what I said about the “conditions” which you have brought up - that needs to be addressed as well. My wife is a teacher and fully agree with you on what is delivered to school via very bad parents that just don’t take the effort to improve their own lives - be it their kids as well...

I suggest every family that has the means in the US adopt at least 1 child out of the foster care and help these kids fully BREAK the cycle of abuse...it’s not about having a child of your own “blood” - it’s about making sure these kids have a loving home and the opportunity to become an effective citizen...

Leftist, hyper-secular PC, feel-good moral mush is no substitute for Biblical morality. The appalling spiritual poverty and inhuman, unchecked cruelty endemic is schools is the evidence.

This may be a rather cold post, but I'm not surprised. It is what it is. Schools have gotten worse and worse. It's prison. Reform School. Punk Prison. Juvenile hall. Kids uncontrolled by parents in groups are lord of the flies. Pack mentality of wolves.

I took some crap when I was younger. I used to be a stickboy until I was 13, 14 when I starting working out, getting stronger. More importantly, I gained confidence as well as strength, and found out I could throw a very good right hand and could deliver a very strong boot to the ribs. It was a very good feeling.

Knowing the situation, I'm going to make sure my kids don't go through what I did, or ten times worse, what folks today are going through. Strength. Techniques. Don't bully. Don't tolerate it. If bullied, destroy them. Knock them out. If they come back, knock them out worse until the message is delivered.

When I have time - in between tours as I got back from Iraq - I would go into the schools and teach on my breaks - and I bought with me the military discipline - and what surprised me was the students that came up to me and said they wanted me to stay because they were actually allowed to learn and have a quiet class...

Per your son - he was right to speak up - and tell him to start his own outside hallway forum and start educating others. Type a 1 page memo's on this stuff and start passing it out to others - start after schools clubs that revisit these morals and norms that made us a super power - get the students organized to learn what the US is about - the Colonial War for Independence....we need to get back to that now...plus it will teach your son to be a leader of patriots and not the community organisers of socialism...

I went to the staff at my kid's elementary school because there were some kids taunting the special ed kids.

It's an easy argument, really. If those kids were using slurs to describe blacks, asians, or hispanics they would be strung up by their thumbs and kicked out of school. The same should happen to kids that make fun of the disabled. I left that meeting with the principal crying, and I never raised my voice.

Tragic.

Do not send your kids to government schools.

First, “feral youth” is a very apt description! It is completely what I witness among parents and children today. This theory that “the kids will work it out among themselves” is complete bunk and I cringe any time I hear a parent say that. KIDS NEED PARENTAL GUIDANCE!!!! Parents leaving their kids to work it out among themselves does nothing but breed bullies and uncivilized behavior.

Second, I witness quite a bit of catty, bullying behavior and I live in a fairly wealthy white suburb with mostly stable two-parent homes. So it’s not just a ghetto thing.

You’re absolutely correct, especially about the ability of the bad kids to turn other kids, and their learned behaviour.

good! you should have told that you would be coming back to check up on things weekly...of course my son will be in the same elem school as my wife, who’s a spec ed teacher - if one kid says something like that to my son - all the teachers know my background and will take care of it - they know what could occur if they don’t - making fun of others and picking on those with special needs has no place in this world - kids that do - should watch out - they may end up in a wreck later on in life and realize that life can change one in a good way or a bad way...

I’m not excusign the kids for bullying him.

But by your logic, can they be expected to change their behavior?

There’s “innocent victim”, and then there’s -essentially - “asking for it”.

If you’re in the later category and you get what you crave (attention, etc.) then you certainly realize that it’s in your power to stop the game too.

It’s possible the kid was screwed up and was simply going to kill himslef no matter what.

Yes that is exactly why these girls are tormented. The less atractives ones have to destory them and that is exactly what they try to do.Sometimes it works especially if the school doesn’t try to stop it or looks the other way.

"They were laughing at the way she looked," Suzana says, crying. "Even though she died."

Welcome to the world of government-trained monkey-children where even discussing the 10 Commandments is illegal, and schools can be sorted by body count.

Congratulations NEA and teachers' unions everywhere.

You got exactly what you wanted. How does it taste?

On a related note, was I the *only* kid in school who beat up the bullies when they picked on someone else? Did *nobody* else take being a superhero seriously?
