n a private conversation captured on audiotape, California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown or one of his aides can be heard referring to Republican rival Meg Whitman as a "whore," the Los Angeles Times reported late Thursday.

The exchange, recorded by a voicemail, discussed Whitman cutting a deal to protect law enforcement pensions as the candidates competed for endorsements from police, the L.A. Times said.

I looked up the definition of “whore” on dictionary.com.

I saw definition number 4:

“verb (used with object)
4.
Obsolete . to make a whore of; corrupt; debauch.”

I read it.

Whitman did not come to mind when I read it.

Apparently the guy who got the message isn’t a big a supporter as moonbeam thought he was. Will the voters be repulsed by this?

“...Whitman cutting a deal to protect law enforcement pensions as the candidates competed for endorsements from police...”

If this is true, the word may be impolite but the meaning accurate.

The issue is not whether she is a whore and certainly not whether they called her a "whore" but whether she actually cut the deal. If she did then she is in fact worse than a whore, she is a liability to the conservative cause and must be repudiated for treachery.

" she is a liability to the conservative cause and must be repudiated for treachery."

Therefore we should support Brown?

The point of repudiating a Republican candidate who double deals as is alleged that Meg Whitman has done is to discipline now and future candidates. This is not an office that will decide control of the Senate, rather it is the chief executive of the state of California which state is almost certainly heading for bankruptcy.

The question is do we want a Republican governor who behaves like Arnold Schwarzenegger while presiding over the disintegration of the nation's biggest state and, Bush like, so discredit the Republican brand that nothing can be rescued from the ashes? Or do we want a governor after the pattern of New Jersey's Gov. Christie will make the case so that the voters can put the blame where it belongs and maybe even save the state?

The old line is that politics is the art of the possible.

This is not an office that will decide control of the Senate, rather it is the chief executive of the state of California which state is almost certainly heading for bankruptcy.

The United States of America is also headed for bankruptcy. So we should sit on our hands this election?

Or do we want a governor after the pattern of New Jersey's Gov. Christie

It is often noted on this site that Gov Christie's CV is less than pure conservatism. The quest for purity is suicide.

First, a couple of disclaimers so that the discussion does not wander off: first, all my comments are predicated on the assumption that Whitman did in fact promise that she would protect the pensions of a public service union in exchange for their support. You will note that my original post clearly stated, "if she did" a phrase which you omitted when you quoted me.

Second, my original post was submitted in response to the context of the thread which was concentrating on the propriety, or the lack of it, in calling Whitman, "whore." It seems to me that conservatives should find it far more concerning that their champion might be doing back room deals with the very entities that have brought her state to the verge of bankruptcy.

The fiscal condition a California may or may not be worse than the fiscal condition of the United States but it is clearly more immediate and the reckoning will come there first. Therefore, California is likely once more to lead the nation-this time over the cliff. In this scenario, I do not want the Republican brand tarnished by a chief executive who is cutting backroom deals over pensions with public employee unions. Such a sorry pattern would tarnish the Republican image and make it more difficult to elect a Republican president in 2012. It would splinter the party. Better to deal with the matter now if, repeat if, Whitman is truly guilty of these trespasses.

I repeat, this issue is of far more import than whether the Brown campaign has a potty mouth.

It is often noted on this site that Gov Christie's CV is less than pure conservatism. The quest for purity is suicide.

I'm a lost to respond to this because it is obviously internally inconsistent. If Christie is not pure then there is no need to worry about committing suicide in the search for purity. Anyway, even Ronald Reagan himself was not "pure."

But there are more important considerations than word play. This election is turning on fiscal responsibility which Christie displays in spades despite his squishiness on some social issues. Incidentally, Meg Whitman is unsound as far as I am concerned on many social issues, especially abortion. Christie at least is pure on fiscal issues and without taint of sellout.

The battleground after the election will move to the states as they lurch towards insolvency and it is vital that we have Republicans who are actually Republicans standing watch. The issue about Meg Whitman is, what are her core values, is she truly a fiscal conservative, does she have the kind of character on fiscal issues the governor Christie has? The wrong Republican in this post would be worse than Jerry Brown because as she sells out to these unions she would preside over the bankruptcy of California and put the blame on conservatism. We've had enough of that with Gov. Schwarzenegger and even with George Bush.

“The issue about Meg Whitman is, what are her core values, is she truly a fiscal conservative, does she have the kind of character on fiscal issues the governor Christie has? “
You have to vote for her to find out! Or support her as the case may be.

“This election is turning on fiscal responsibility which Christie displays in spades “
Gov Christie has held the office since January of this year. Looks good so far.
Marry in haste, repent at leisure.

” I do not want the Republican brand tarnished “
Purity is very rare and may be unobtainable.

“Better to deal with the matter now if, repeat if, Whitman is truly guilty of these trespasses.”
We have far more leverage with one who claims to represent our views in office then the alternatives.
Our Democratic Republic should(?) function bottom up not top down.

Why the quest for purity is suicide.
A Venn diagram of purity
As the number of views (sets) increases the area of intersection decreases.
If your stated view is typical then it is unlikely the sets would coalesce.
This will not provide the numbers to win.
