Barack Obama accused of exaggerating terror threat for political gain (The Guardian?!)

• Pakistani diplomat launches scathing attack on White House • European intelligence claims raised terror alerts 'nonsensical'

A US terror alert issued this week about al-Qaida plots to attack targets in western Europe was politically motivated and not based on credible new information, senior Pakistani diplomats and European intelligence officials have told the Guardian.

The non-specific US warning, which despite its vagueness led Britain, France and other countries to raise their overseas terror alert levels, was an attempt to justify a recent escalation in US drone and helicopter attacks inside Pakistan that have "set the country on fire", said Wajid Shamsul Hasan, the high commissioner to Britain.

Hasan, a veteran diplomat who is close to Pakistan's president, suggested the Obama administration was playing politics with the terror threat before next month's mid-term congressional elections, in which the Republicans are expected to make big gains.

He also claimed President Obama was reacting to pressure to demonstrate that his Afghan war strategy and this year's troop surge, which are unpopular with the American public, were necessary.

"I will not deny the fact that there may be internal political dynamics, including the forthcoming mid-term American elections. If the Americans have definite information about terrorists and al-Qaida people, we should be provided [with] that and we could go after them ourselves," Hasan said.

"Such reports are a mixture of frustrations, ineptitude and lack of appreciation of ground realities..."

Dismissing claims of a developed, co-ordinated plot aimed at Britain, France and Germany, European intelligence officials also pointed the finger at the US, and specifically at the White House. "To stitch together [the terror plot claims] in a seamless narrative is nonsensical," said one well-placed official.

Who knows what the truth is here. It's very sad, potentially tragic, that we can no longer give our own government the benefit of the doubt.

The sharp rise in US unmanned drone attacks in Pakistan's tribal areas coupled with several cross-border raids by American helicopter gunships that culminated in the killing of two Frontier Corps soldiers last week, was destabilising Pakistan, Hasan said.

American actions were "obviously" linked to Obama's decision to set a timetable for leaving Afghanistan. The US leader had "jumped the gun" and now "the Americans are in a hurry".

Ah, ha. Now we see his motivation. Obama wants out.

Well, you know that this whole deal about western jihadis, having been trained over there in jihadland, now was heading back to the west to mount attacks - that was a big newsitem more than a year ago. So now the whole thing is “new” again?

*Something* sure is going one here, and it sure isn’t “intelligence”.

We are witnesses to Chicago style politics at a national level. The "truth" in Chicago is whatever Mayor Daley say it is. If you don't go along with the "truth", the union thugs pay a visit. Corruption in every agency is the norm.

what do you expect from a liar in chief. his entire life is based on a lie. If he is continually lying about everything and anything. You truly wonder what other parts of his life are in disarray. The sins of a man will find him out. Flies on the face, rat on the elevated riser, seal falling off the podium, people falling ill at a speech, wifey angry at him about alleged affair while campaigning and whatever else is coming down the pipeline

Anyone with half a brain instinctively knew this from the start. It's why they chose the threat in Europe. It was designed to put security in the forefront of people's minds rather than the fact that they are on food stamps and freezing the butts off this fall because they can't afford to heat the place they are living in.

They couldn't have a fake security threat here because it was a toss up if people would look to that weakling in charge and be more reminded what a weakling he is. So, they chose Europe. Ofcourse, everyone yawned because 1. no one cares about Europe and 2. they are more concerned with eating and getting a roof over their head than some boogey man in a cave or Hamburg.

I thought it was very odd how the MSM announce the day before that the travel warning was coming. They made a big deal out of it.

“...we can no longer give our own government the benefit of the doubt”.

My thoughts exactly. For the first time in my life I feel the US government is working directly against me as a tax-paying, law-abiding American.
