A New Breed of Home Marijuana Grower
California -- Joanne Clarke, a legal secretary in her late 50s, leads the way down a pale green hallway in her modest Costa Mesa home, past a small guest room on the right and a blue tiled bathroom on the left. At the end of the hall, she opens a door, pushes aside a thick black curtain and ducks inside.
"Isn't this wild?" she says, gesturing to the high-tech marijuana grow room she and her husband recently installed. "This used to be my daughter's bedroom."
Wild is one word for it. Bright is another. Unexpected, yet another. What had been a teenager's tropical-themed room is now a beaming, humming, indoor plant laboratory complete with silver reflective bubble wrap on the walls, blinding grow lights, ventilation ducts hanging from the ceiling and marijuana plants in various stages of development neatly labeled with names such as Platinum Kush, Purple Diesel and Blue Cheese.
"They are like our children," Clarke says, gazing proudly at the elegant fronds that look familiar and exotic all at once. "We talk to them."
Clarke's grow room is legal — in the state of California, anyone with a doctor's recommendation to use marijuana can grow it in limited quantities — yet it still feels clandestine. Although she's open about using pot (crushed and placed in capsules) to help manage the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, she and her husband haven't shown the room to any friends. "Ninety-five percent of the people I know are fine with it," she says, "but it's that 5% that I worry about. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable."

You’re a frustrated authoritarian aren’t you. Things are just flying out of control everywhere and you can’t get a handle on it. I understand how you feel.
I’ve used therapeutic Wintergreen essential oil on arthritis, and it’s worked fine for me. Sure takes up a lot less room.
You do know that hemp rope was replaced by manila rope for ships a long time ago, right?
“Manila hemp” is a type of fiber obtained from the leaves of the abacá. It is not actually hemp, but named so because hemp was long a major source of fiber, and other fibers were sometimes named after it. Sort of like the way today’s “vellum” is not really vellum at all.

By 1937, forty-six of the forty-eight states as well as the District of Columbia had laws against marijuana. No federal action was taken until the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937.
The reasons for this are well known, and have nothing to do with people growing hemp to make rope.

When the Chief said two strand left laid tarred hemp cord(and it was always called by it’s formal name. Don’t really know why?), I really thought it was hemp. Thanks, I will put that in the memory banks.

Well, ya all just keep throwing people in locked cages in your state...Feed them bread and water and horse whip them daily...Force the tax payers to jail, feed and provide them with health care. Hire thousands of more cops to help out.

I have osteoarthritis in my back, and the only thing I ever do for the pain is exercise. I find that keeping the muscles around the arthritic joint toned is far better than any chemical pain killer. Other than the exercise, I'm careful how I pick things up and how I sit.
Clearly the drug warriors are not happy about this turn of events, The war on drugs is BIG business.
Hate to point it out, but there’s a slight difference between muddier and marijuana. Arguably the unlawful taking of life is against manmade and natural law. Marijuana is only against manmade law. Who’s rights get hurt by a person lighting up a joint?
And why should we spend untold billions on a failed policy that fivers govt more power over us?
I don’t believe that engaging in any behavior that results in intoxication is good, but you tell me how to stop it. Watch Boardwalk Empire on HBO and you will see that the unintended consequences of Prohibition are far greater than the behavior itself.
The FreeDopers will be okay with it, but the hippies are going to be so conflicted.
