CA: A New Breed of Home Marijuana Grower

A New Breed of Home Marijuana Grower

California -- Joanne Clarke, a legal secretary in her late 50s, leads the way down a pale green hallway in her modest Costa Mesa home, past a small guest room on the right and a blue tiled bathroom on the left. At the end of the hall, she opens a door, pushes aside a thick black curtain and ducks inside.

"Isn't this wild?" she says, gesturing to the high-tech marijuana grow room she and her husband recently installed. "This used to be my daughter's bedroom."

Wild is one word for it. Bright is another. Unexpected, yet another. What had been a teenager's tropical-themed room is now a beaming, humming, indoor plant laboratory complete with silver reflective bubble wrap on the walls, blinding grow lights, ventilation ducts hanging from the ceiling and marijuana plants in various stages of development neatly labeled with names such as Platinum Kush, Purple Diesel and Blue Cheese.

"They are like our children," Clarke says, gazing proudly at the elegant fronds that look familiar and exotic all at once. "We talk to them."

Clarke's grow room is legal — in the state of California, anyone with a doctor's recommendation to use marijuana can grow it in limited quantities — yet it still feels clandestine. Although she's open about using pot (crushed and placed in capsules) to help manage the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, she and her husband haven't shown the room to any friends. "Ninety-five percent of the people I know are fine with it," she says, "but it's that 5% that I worry about. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable."

How would you like to have a pothead as your “legal secretary”. Yikes! She’s high all the time but her “arthritis” feels a lot better. LOL!

I think I’m coming down with a severe case of rheumatoid arthritis. I live in California and this situation pisses me off. These people are going around the law through loop holes in order to get freaking high all day long. Unless I missed it, they article didn’t state what these two pot growers do a living. If the husband spends hours in the room cultivating his crops, what time does he have to work and make a living. They are probably both on disability and getting a check from the state to do nothing but smoke pot.
In my opinion, something needs to be done about law breakers like these. Like I said, this is just my opinion, I’m sure there are people that have a different opinion than mine.

She’s a legal secretary.

What they are doing is legal in CA. Are you upset that they are breaking federal laws?

Oh, I see, you are opposed to State’s Rights and want the Federal Government to throw these people in prison?

Yeah, and Columbus’ sails on his ship, the U.S. Constitution, Jesus’ sandals. I’ve heard all that. However, I’m a Cheech and Chong fan too! “DAVE’S NOT HERE!!”

Hey, if you want to piss in everybody’s Wheaties, just grow a bunch of male plants.

The main object of growth is Sinsemilla, unpollinated female plants. Imagine the horror when people look in their garden and find out their little girls are in a family way. ;-)

Dave's not here man.

There are 10,000 DUIs everyday. And yet some people seem to be just fixated on pot. If someone wants to stay drunk all day they can I guess. No problem. How many people take Vicadin and Oxycontin 24 hours a day? But anyone smoking pot is a 'pothead' and ‘high 24 hours a day’ in some opinions.

If these same people had a wet bar with 95 bottles of booze, no one would think twice about it.

Apparently the California drug addicts are about to score a great victory. The rest of us will face increased highway injury, death and higher taxes to pay for the resulting mess, but that's ok, the pot heads are happy.

These people currently growing the drug probably have fantasies of making money. Once again the politicians will see that their favorites will get the franchises-(in return for "contributions")- and folks like those set forth in the article will be "hung out to dry." If any such people do start to make real money they will be cut off at the knees by the politicians and their favorites.

“How would you like to have a pothead as your “legal secretary””

Probably wouldn’t be as bad as a legal secretary working for a coke-head lawyer.

If you have ever had arthritis you would know that it can be so painful as to prevent movement. It hurts like he**. I have it in only one thumb but it is quite painful and if I had it in all my fingers I would certainly do anything I could to ease the pain and restore movement. Don't be so frickin' quick to judge. From what I understand, from other people, you don't have to get high to ease, or even kill, the pain with MJ.

My neighbor has a medical license for MJ and grows his in the open. He has a back disability from his time in the service and it kills the pain and he never exhibits evidence of being "high".

People in chronic pain will try anything to ease it, hopefully you will never be in that condition but if you are don't be surprised if you try puffing on a joint, or taking it internally, in order to kill the pain for a while.

"They are like our children," Clarke says, gazing proudly at the elegant fronds that look familiar and exotic all at once. "We talk to them."

And sometimes, you know, like, they, like, talk back. It's like really wild, you know.

I’ve got arthritis but I’m also tough enough to deal with it. Getting old isn’t for sissies. Besides, I’ve got a job so I can’t be out there walking around high all the time.
