Another televangelist flames out
Daily Caller ^ | 9/29/10 | Ron Hart

After four lawsuits alleging he coerced young males into sexual relationships were filed, Georgia pastor Eddie Long took to the pulpit Sunday to carefully nuance his side of the story.

Long, the charismatic who leads his mega-church of 26,000 members, told reporters after Sunday’s service that he would challenge the allegations. Joined by members of his legal team, he carefully read from prepared remarks — always a sign of innocence.

By now we know how the redemptive process works for a televangelist accused of sexual relations with young males. First there is the allegation. Then there is the carefully worded, non-denial denial in which he says he will “fight the charges.” Then the preacher puts his jet and all the money he has yet to get into the bankruptcy-proof corporate shell he controls. Then his lawyers handle the settlements while the preacher gives lots of ensuing sermons on forgiveness.

You posted this in news, that means there’s a lot more latitude than in the religion forum.

I know. It wasn’t intended to be a religious discussion. I should have known better.

"The nutjobs have already covered that base.

We have been instructed by the finest of Reformed apologists that all of the Apostles and even Jesus are irrelevant. The only thing we need to know about Christianity are carefully excised snippets of Paul and Isaiah. As delivered to us by Calvin and the Westminster Confession of Faith."

It seems as though some of that water from the Tiber has gotten in your ears. Calling me a nutjob (not altogether incorrect) seems to be exactly what Jesus was referring to in that RCC favorite, the Sermon on the Mount. Didn't that just qualify you for the "hell of fire"? (Matt. 5:22) And here I thought you actually believed this stuff.

"Where are all the threads posted prior to a couple weeks ago suggesting that Eddie Long isn't a "real" Christian?"

Until yesterday I had never heard of Eddie Long, so let me make a retro-comment effective two weeks ago...Eddie Long is not teaching the Gospel any more than the RCC does. How's that? No, make that three weeks ago.

You had no way of knowing that the bigots would try to turn this around and make it about Catholicism.

Thanks for the pings.

I see the Coven is still inventing airy-fairy history about the church not coming into existence until the 1600’s.

Fancy that! They think a Holy Spirit MIA, a bunch of hopelessly futile Apostles, and Church Fathers who were simply a bunch of mad men.

At first I thought DB88's comment was merely a gratuitous slam on Catholics. But his later comments led me to think that he thinks of Reform-type churches as a sort of via media, correct in their anti-Catholic ecclesiology but still clinging to and "rightly dividing" scripture so that they haven't gone completely round the bend.

It's hard, after what seems like a slap in the face that one had no reason to expect and little time to defend from, to try -- even to WANT to try -- to determine what underlies what seems like gratuitous hostility.

Sometimes the RCC crowd attempts to link these circus-like religionists to the message for which the Reformers argued. They associate all non-Catholics as believing the same thing.

To we believers, anything other than the Gospel is essentially the same thing. It is really difficult to discern the individual heresies developed during the various generations after the Reformation. Most of us simply don't bother except for the major ones. Kinda like deciding to deal with the poisonous spiders before dealing with the midges.

But, we who hold to the biblical Gospel of Jesus Christ like to periodically remind them that because the grandstanders err on one side, as Catholicism errs on the other, we don't embrace their nonsense any more than we acknowledge the nonsense from Rome.

Your bunch does not hold to the biblical Gospel of Jesus Christ. You guys preach to us surgically excised snippets of Paul and Isaiah. We preach the Gospel unashamedly and perhaps a little too loudly for many.

to determine what underlies what seems like gratuitous hostility.

It's typically referred to as bigotry.

“...gratuitous hostility.”

It makes a mockery of every martyr and saint who died preaching the faith and bringing into Christian life the Traditions we follow which were before the Scripture was canonized.

Catholcism is based on Scripture. Including the Gospels!

Have you ever looked at a Sacramentary — the book the priest uses during Mass.

Almost ALL the prayers are from the Bible.

Get a life!

Letting them see it again. Maybe they missed the message.

It’s amazing how a thread about alleged homosexual misconduct by a “Reformed” pastor

"Oh I strongly agree with you. But that hadn't come up when you had posted that. I just hate to see us fighting with each other too often. We should have a lot in common with Catholics on most issues. There are just a couple on this site who seem to be obnoxious from what I have seen."

There is no reason for us to be "obnoxious" around here. That being said, some folks believe any comment that criticizes their position is cruel and obnoxious. Since somebody is probably right and somebody else is probably wrong about what the Gospel really is, somebody needs to hear that their view is errant. Those of us that think the RCC teaches an abberation of the Gospel, an abberation that is every bit as deadly as the goof-ball Eddie Long, don't wish to leave the impression that there is much we have in common with those who teach that dangerous error. You can tell who I believe is in error.

If you believe we have other things in common with Catholics, recall, they are primarily Democrats even though the Democrat platform is strongly pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, pro-drug, pro-illegal immigration, pro-union (rather than business), pro-antiAmerican (is there such a word? I just needed another "pro-something"). As such, most of them are not conservatives by any stretch. Some around here might be, but their one-government headquarters in Rome has other ideas.

Catholics claim that their positions are supported by the Scripture, but then when confronted by contradictions to such views from the Scriptures, they shift gears and argue they hold the right of interpretation over those texts. Circular. Such utter nonsense needs rebuking, a concept that Paul tells us is appropriate.

If I have stepped beyond rebuking, admonishing, & correcting, then that is wrong. Let me know your view.

Are you referring to this post? I don’t understand how it can be seen as anything but a “gratuitous slam on Catholics”.

Some Christians!

“On a protestant christian hiphop message board I often hang out at, there is a split between the Calvinists and Reformed who tend to see Eddie Long as unsaved and so they were pretty happy about this situation. They had nothing good to say about the man. He was pretty much guilty at the start.”

Oops! http://ancientchristiandefender.blogspot.com/2010/09/eddie-long-situation.html

Happy about a man’s fall?

That’s not Christian, that’s demonic.

There is no reason for us to be "obnoxious" around here.

Nobody ever suggested that sound reasoning existed among the anti-Catholics.

That being said, some folks believe any comment that criticizes their position is cruel and obnoxious.

Actually, it's far more likely to be a laughable falsehood.

Since somebody is probably right and somebody else is probably wrong about what the Gospel really is, somebody needs to hear that their view is errant.

ALL Catholic masses have Gospel readings, many Protestants services DO NOT. I've been told on FR that the Gospels weren't even written for Christians. I think it's fairly obvious where the error is.

Those of us that think the RCC teaches an abberation of the Gospel, an abberation that is every bit as deadly as the goof-ball Eddie Long, don't wish to leave the impression that there is much we have in common with those who teach that dangerous error.

You're half-right, anti-Catholics often have NOTHING in common with actual Christians.

Yet another OPINION with no actual evidence. What about the multitude of Reformed groups that support abortion and conduct homosexual "marriages"?

Catholics claim that their positions are supported by the Scripture, but then when confronted by contradictions to such views from the Scriptures, they shift gears and argue they hold the right of interpretation over those texts. Circular. Such utter nonsense needs rebuking, a concept that Paul tells us is appropriate.

Anti-Catholics cannot seem to grasp that it is THEIR interpretation that is WRONG.

If I have stepped beyond rebuking, admonishing, & correcting, then that is wrong.

Nah, just keep stepping in it.
