University of Texas at Austin just issued an alert of an armed suspect at the Perry-Casteneda Library. Alert went out to students' cell phones. KXAN reporter told me that no shots have been fired but Austin PD is setting up a command post and UT police are hunting for suspect. Also said students are being told to go back to their dorms. IMO, it's more dangerous to have students out walking to their dorms instead of staying inside buildings but whatever...
The library opened in the mid-70s while I was a student there. It was one of several odd architecture creations on campus where saner heads should have said “no”. The Communications Building was coated with a metal that was supposed to rust into the burnt orange color. But, instead, it rusted into a darker, ugly shade that just looks like an eyesore now.
Dead gunman was a student. Not all of campus buildings have been cleared even though the “all clear” has been issued. Students who live on campus are to remain in their dorms. All other students and faculty should leave campus as they are released from their buildings.
I must say that UT and APD did very well this morning. They were on the scene promptly and alert went out to student cell phones immediately. There was some cell service interruptions due to so much usage. I do know that AT&T was upgrading their system a couple weeks ago but I don't know if that work is still in progress.
Just got this breaking news from Statesman:
UT campus shooting suspect identified as Colton Tooley
Yeah, been hearing the same. I think his dad is a vet. His house is nice, clean, and middle class-looking and has a basketball hoop outside. He supposedly graduated from Crockett HS and that kid who was killed by the train last week was from Crockett, too. Wonder if they knew each other?
Is he an adopted Iraqi? The only reason I say this is because if you put him into the group of Iraqis I know and asked someone to pick out the one who wasn’t an Iraqi, it wouldn’t be him.
I know a family with that last name, but don’t think they are related. I will try to send one of them and email and see if they have a clue about this kid. I know their daughter went to UT, but graduated in 2008.
