A collection of more than 100 previously unpublished photos of Marilyn Monroe can be seen for the first time in a new book. 'Marilyn: August 1953', published this week by Calla Editions, features digitally restored black and white images taken during the summer of 1953 of a then 27-year-old Monroe.
The photos were shot by John Vachon, on assignment for LOOK magazine in Alberta, Canada, where Monroe was filming 'River of No Return' with Robert Mitchum.

LOL!
Joe was not a wife beater. He strongly disagreed with the Hollywood crowd and their immoral lifestyle. This is why at her funeral he REFUSED to allow the Hollywood elite to be there. It is also true that he stated, “they killed her.” They, Hollywood and their exploitation of “stars” is what contributed to her death. She got caught up in it. If I were him, I'd also NOT want my wife to be part of THAT and on display like she was.
Marlin Monroe has a very different upbringing that Elizabeth Taylor. Marilyn's mother was locked up in an insane asylum. Marlyn's father left her when she was little. She had a very unstable family life and very vulnerable to begin with. Yes, Marilyn did choose Hollywood over Joe. Each had to make a choice because each wanted something different.
As for Elizabeth Taylor ... she WAS pretty when she was young but drugs, alcohol and numerous husbands have taken their toll on her. It's a miracle she is till alive. She's about as LEFT as you can get. She is hardly a happy woman. Taylor was a good actress but she paid a heavy price for it in her personal life.
Today we have the Lindsay Lohan’s, Britney Spears, Anna Nicole Smith kinds following in her footsteps. Smith is dead and her exploitation was over the top!
Smith was in no condition to even understand what was going on anymore. They kept her pumped up with drugs and removed any shred of dignity that she may have had. I see many parallels to Marilyn Monroe's life. She too had NO FATHER present in her life, leaving her very vulnerable to men. Her mom was a drunken floozy and very impoverished as Monroe was.
Eventually, if they don't truly straighten out they will wind up dead. If Spears and Lonhan don't straighten up, they will wind up dead as well. It will aslo be the Hollywood influence that tips the scales for them tooo.
yep...
Few Hollywood marriages survive. The ones that did where the ones that did NOT live Hollywood values. The McQueen's where married for years. They hid away in Conn. They did not want to be caught up in the Hollywood HIGH life. Speaking of Steve McQueen, in an interview he was questioned if he was true to his wife. His reply was, why settle from hamburger when you have steak waiting for you at home.
Well, I still say Dimaggio should have known that that was part of MM’s life; posing seductively, being gawked at by other men. He had to know she’d never give up the movie star life and everything that went with it.
Yes. Anna Nicole was a sad case.
My grandmother grew up near Mexia where Anna was born and knew the family. She said the family was known as ‘trailor trash’ in the worse sense of the word, and Anna never had a chance.
Yeah ... that's kind of what I gathered in reading about her and her background.
It's no wonder she hooked up with a rich old man. Sure part of t was for the money. He got cheap thrills from her but the bigger need, a FATHER figure was in her life. The money allowed her to feel secure and he probably doted on her.
She must have been pretty desperate for love to go along with an old man with nearly two feet in the grave for it. She lost her dignity and self resepct some time ago ... so this was just another chapter in her life.
I see this time and time again. Family is so important. With girls they need a father present. He is their introduction to other men at a later time. If he runs out, there is terrible insecurity. A dad is supposed to love and nurture them and protect them from predators like the ones she was hanging out with in the end.
Don't get me wrong, moms are important too. Each plays a distinct and necessary role in the life of a child. Smith was almost guaranteed the terrible ending she had. She was so out of it on drugs and so exploited while drugged that she had no resistance to them. She paid their way and they helped themselves and kept her out of it.
She turned out to be a sad soft porn joke. Any beauty she had was gone. How she dressed and looked was a mockery of anything remotely relating to beauty. Her life was a tragedy.
Some girls and guys make mistakes in life. I am all for second chances an deven third chances when they are sincere. Look at David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson from the X FIles (1993 long running series). David Douchovny played the infamous, FBI special agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully was played by Gillian Anderson. Douchovny prior to X-File was a HUGE HARD CORE PORN STAR! No kidding. He turned his life around.
Douchovny married and had two kids. He cheated on his wife ONCE. He was sincerely sorry and hasn't cheated again. Their marriage is fine. BTW this was years ago and they are stll happily married.
My point is that SOME people can change when they have the right influences in their life. Other actresses like Katherine Hepburn didn't have the sexpot image and lived a very decent life. So did other actresses at the time. If anyone could have influenced her in the right way, it was Joe.
It's just a shame that Hollywierd was more important to her. Hey, Joe already had the money. It's not as though she needed to worry about that. There were other things she could have done with her life that what she did.
Interestingly enough, MM’s next marriage was a rebound one to another father figure - Arthur Miller. He was more compatible to her occupation but that didn't work out either.
MM really wasn't that great of an actress. She was attractive and made into a milder Anna Nicole Smith. MM had potential but never let it materialize. She wasn't the empty head that most thought. I saw some interviews that she did and there was a brain there ... but she was type cast and couldn't get out of it.
Joe probably thought he could change her.
Love is often blind.
When did Joe Dimaggio remarry?
I suspect MM was the love of his life but her lifestyle was not something he could accept. She died on August 5, 1962.
“According to Allen, on August 1, 1962, DiMaggio alarmed by how Monroe had fallen in with people he considered detrimental to her well-being quit his job with a PX supplier to ask her to remarry him.”
After Monroe’s death, DiMaggio claimed her body and arranged her funeral. For 20 years, he had a half-dozen red roses delivered to her crypt three times a week.”

Yeh. I guess.
I think Marilyn just had a desperate need to be noticed, appreciated- loved after the childhood she had.
Whatever love she got was never enough but she kept seeking it in HW until they used her up.
Yes. Apparently Anna liked the old fellow in her life for his money to give her security- after the life she had known growing up.
Too bad she didn’t get any of it. Her daughter could have had a better life.
It’s good that mother of Anna’s didn’t get her paws on Danilynne. The father who got custody of her seems like a pretty good guy.
That lawyer of hers, Howard, ought to go to jail for getting her all that dope. (as well as the doctors who were prescribing it)
Anna asked for those drugs and could have gotten them anywhere else. She was self destructive and I think that she could have turned her life around, but really, she had to make that chance.
If you don’t mind my saying, Monroe lived in a world of fantasy, as indicated that she sincerely believed that JFK would leave his wife and marry her during their affair. If you don’t have a good grounding in reality, you get destroyed by that system. Same with Dandridge really. Both kept refusing or were unable to face the realities of their personas. Monroe chose the sexpot role and same with Dorothy.
A lot of actresses sadly don’t realize that once you go into that industry, you are an object, not a human being. And men will not be interested in you for your mind initially.
That is the only picture of Marilyn that I have seen where she looks genuinely happy.
I think that she saw her self destruction as inevitable and did so as a result. I read a biography by Ted Jordon that debunked the murder theory. She was going to self destruct and she needed discipline and not indulgence, which happened because she was such a big moneymaker for the studio. She was too chaotic to sustain the discipline needed to survive in that industry and not go crazy. And she knew what she was doing since she let herself be exploited by the Hollywood machine. She did whatever she could to become a star. She was no victim. Her ambition was intense.
