The apparent hardcore cyclists in my area seem to me to be rude, inconsiderate, obnoxious and clearly feel they own any road they’re on.
Hope he wasn’t one of them.

My BIL biked across America several summers ago. I have no idea how he did it. It’s tough for cyclists on the road. I can see why you mountain bike.

Had a guy on Old Mine Road riding dead center of my lane.
No, he didn’t move.
No, he clearly expected me to drive into oncoming traffic.
He was verbally reminded that he’s supposed to move over for traffic.
He muttered something as we drove past him.
I wished a truck was coming along behind me... and that’s bad considering I bike that road myself!
Difference being, I’m not in the middle of the road!

This is the reason I almost exclusively mountain bike now. I've had way more near death experiences with tree roots and rocks than with cars. Mountain biking can be downright terrifying sometimes.

Didnt they make a bunch of movies with this as the plot? Man escapes death only to die later

This reminds me of people in relatively late model cars that have dents in every corner of the car. They should not be driving.
It may be that this is a person that simply did not have the spacial reasoning and hand eye coordination skills necessary to safely control a bicycle.
Or it could be an amazing coincidence.

This was local and I haven't been able to get the story out of my head. Just last week the paper ran a big story on him and his new bike.. Seeing him posing with his young daughters is stuck in my mind.
I am more concerned with the guys in the ambulance, they see this stuff everyday, but to actually be involved might be rough.

Long Beach, CA The city officials came up with a bright idea. They painted a green strip @5’ across and it runs the length of a busy 4 lane street, 2nd St. Naples area, that is in the middle of the outside lane, with parked cars along the curb. It’s marked for cyclist.
These morons on beach cruiser bikes ride double down the strip while cars swerve around them. It’s only a matter of time before they end up like this guy.

These things are trikes, usually with a fairly narrow rear track. They handle completely different than a bike. I’d say unfamiliarity may have contributed.

I very nearly backed over a recumbent bike, I think they are called. I was backing out of an angle parking space and he was zipping along on the street. He was almost completely below my field of vision. I caught a glimpse of something in one of my side mirrors and slammed on the brakes. He got mad at me but soon realized how invisible he was to cars, especially SUV’s like I was driving. Bikes and cars don't mix, stick to the bike trails and I promise I won't drive on them.

Ditto...
When i was a teenager I cycled a lot on the streets. Hit by three cars all of them their fault totally. I was never seriously hurt.
The third time was the charm...
Mountain biking is the only way to go. it is so much nicer in the hills anyway.
now I call street riders suicidal. It is like playing Russian roulette. Nothing happens most of the time but it only takes one time.

Every now and then I’m tempted to give road biking and commuting and stick to off-roading as it’s my real love. But every time I’m tempted, I realize that would just be giving in to fear, and I’m not put together like that.

A few things.
As a paraplegic who has ridden these cycles, I can tell you firsthand that they sit very close to the road. Even an orange flag doesn't help much to see these “low riders”.
Keeping this in mind, riding such a low visibility bike at 12:18 PM is also very dangerous.
That being said, this man left an 8 year old daughter behind, so unlike some here, I don't really see the humor in the tragedy.
