I very nearly backed over a recumbent bike, I think they are called. I was backing out of an angle parking space and he was zipping along on the street. He was almost completely below my field of vision. I caught a glimpse of something in one of my side mirrors and slammed on the brakes. He got mad at me but soon realized how invisible he was to cars, especially SUV’s like I was driving. Bikes and cars don't mix, stick to the bike trails and I promise I won't drive on them.

Recumbents are tough to spot.

When I was in the bike business we called them “Chariots of the Clods.”

You may promise but we had an instance not so long ago where the park ranger had taken down the posts on our local bike trail for a tree cutting crew. Where the trail crossed the street at a light, a "little old man" got confused and turned down the trail in his sedan. Runners and cyclists were forced off of the trail while he rode his horn. Good question as to whom was scared more!

As soon as they build a trail from my house to my office 11 miles away, I promise I'll use it. Until then, there is nothing between my house and work except road, so that's the route I take.

Some of the riders of such conveyances used to affix a florescent flag, which may be insufficiently “cool” for today’s bicycling crowd.

I still remember the bad old days, when you had things like tire-width drain grates, sometimes in the middle of the road. I got one just right once, and...you can visualize the rest.
