The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits rose by more than economists expected last week in yet another reminder of continued weakness in the labor market.
Initial unemployment claims increased by 12,000 to 465,000 in the week ended Sept. 18, the Labor Department said in its weekly report Thursday. New claims for the previous week, ended Sept. 11, were revised upward to 453,000 from 450,000.
A Labor Department economist Thursday said a rise in claims is generally expected in the reporting week after a federal holiday, but this year the filings went up by a little more than anticipated.

This week our local OC Register noted that over 200,000 people now have dropped OFF the rolls due to their “benefits” have expired so we have vast numbers dropping off the rolls and now more on it.
It is ugly.
Unexpected Thursday
(Pleasant Valley Sunday - with apologies to Gerry Goffin, Carole King and the Monkees)
The White House Press Corps down the hall
Is trying hard to learn their song
Serenade the weak kneed Gibbs, who just came out to make them yawn
Another Unexpected Thursday!
Spilled Oil burning everywhere!
Rows of houses they’re all foreclosed
And no one seems to care
See Mrs. O, she’s proud today because her roses are in bloom!
Mr. O he’s so serene, He’s on TV in every room!
Another Unexpected Thursday!
Here in Unemployment Land!
The Press complains about how high it is
And the people just don’t understand
Creature comfort goals
They only numb my soul and make it hard for me to see
My thoughts all seem to stray, to places far away
I need a change of scenery
Ta Ta Ta...

I’m confused. Didn’t they tell us the recession ended a year and half ago?
I don’t believe it. How can this be? nobama promised me that I would get money from rich people. Where the hell is it? I want more benefits! I want more programs! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!!
Benefits expiring doesn’t drop you “off the rolls.”
Last week the MSM proclaimed great news when jobless claims dropped a measly 3000. Now, cue crickets.
WE WANT PIE!...
WE WANT PIE!...
WE WANT PIE!...
WE WANT PIE!...
WE WANT PIE!...
WE WANT PIE!...
WE WANT PIE!...
They may drop you off a bridge.................
>> Benefits expiring doesnt drop you off the rolls. <<
Yes and no. Merely having your benefits expire doesn’t drop you off the U-3 unemployment rate, the most widely cited unemployment rate. However, you must still be actively looking for work. When there’s no work to be had, people will still go through the motions to qualify for their benefits; when those benefits expire, they drop off the rolls if they quit going through the motions.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha!
“cue the crickets” LOL!!!
The Summer of Recovery!!
The September of Recovery!!
The October of Recovery?
Have they tried blowing on the dice?
Do you mean the same 3000 that they have now revised upward? NET ZERO
Do we still drink if the incompetent media doesn't say the exact word (unexpected)?
DRINK !!
Not to quibble about small beer, but initial-claims-to-intitial-claims, it's an increase of 15,000, not 12,000.
...rose by more than Omama expected...
...rose by more than ALCHEMISTS expected.
Economists would actually know better if they were actually economists and not alchemist schills working for Omama.
The Official Democrat View is that the Recession ended 15 months ago.
Just like the Great Depression ended a month after FDR was sworn in, and 17% unemployment at the end of the 1930’s (on the eve of the massive conscription of 13 million working-age men) was just a hiccup in the “Happy Days Are Here Again” chorus.
No-Brains Keynes.
According the the column and others I have heard it does.
I was wondering we have also had county to county un-employment how does that work. Lets say you live in Riverside county but work in orange county. You loose your job and now your un-employment checks are sent to your home in riverside.
How are you counted? Unemployed in Orange or unemployed in riverside?
