New Jobless Claims Rise Unexpectedly Last Week (Up 12,000 to 465,000)

WASHINGTON -- The tally of newly laid-off workers requesting unemployment benefits rose last week for the first time in five weeks as the job market remains sluggish.

Initial claims for jobless aid rose by 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 465,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. Many economists had expected a flat reading or small drop.

The rise suggests that jobs remain scarce and some companies are still cutting workers amid sluggish economic growth. Initial claims have fallen from a recent spike above a half-million last month. But they have been stuck above 450,000 for most of the year.

Claims typically fall below 400,000 when hiring is robust and the economy is growing.

It's unexpected, of course. Nobody could see this coming unless, you know, they opened their eyes.

The 8th. They probably need more time to fix the numbers.

They didn’t think of the week of labor day when government agencies are closed. They use to bring that up when bush was in office

Well thank goodness the recession/contraction ended last June.

And if poor numbers come out PMSNBC jerks will scream that the GOP was wishing for the bad numbers.

I just cut spending further this month.

I poured over the numbers for days looking for things to cut.

Just a couple of months ago this number was 350K and before that during BOOSH's admin it was 300K. The left are a bunch of lying jackasses.

Let them scream all they want.

I am 100% behind the idea of a capital strike to drive these commies from office.

If unions can strike, then so can the business owners!

Keep up the pressure people, keep cutting spending, starve the beast.

Back to “unexpected.” Clueless Dems and libs . . . they aren’t living in the real world anymore. Only clear sighted ones are the criminals who know it’s just a con.

My friends and I have been discussing this particular report months in advance...

We felt strongly that this season’s elections, and next season’s elections would be strongly determined by the August and September jobs numbers...

And of course, then the discussion turned to how bad it would be and how many revisions would have to come out before Americans got the real, true picture.

I believe with these jobs numbers, Americans feel that something is deeply wrong and these Americans - as manifest by the Tea Party movement - want to see more hope and change - yes, but a different flavor than what Obama, Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Dodd et al are serving...

These are the same people in many respects that just wanted things to get better...

Now, since they have seen the failures of both Dems and Repubs, they are looking harder for answers, making perscriptions, getting more involved, becoming more active...and many have even rediscovered the Constitution - and some have even stumbled onto the Free Market - and that is enough to give me hope.

God bless America and the American people. Its good to see you awake and alive again, participating in this country that our forefathers left us.

Perhaps, in this case the unemployment can work in our favor...Perhaps it will free up enough angry, freedom loving Americans to make a mark on this moment in history and leave an example to our children that shows that we will never allow this to happen to us again. We will never allow our rights to be trampled and stolen again...

I can hope.

I have come to believe that they put that word in just to tweak us and see what our reaction will be.

As predictable as the summer rain ... unexpectedly down the week before, unexpectedly up the week after. Seems no one took into account the impact of Labor Day. I mean, heck, it’s not like the holiday snuck up on them or something. Really, what’s up with week after week of unexpected reports. Maybe they should hire someone who knows what they are doing and - unexpectedly - make the numbers change for that week.
