The truth about the sinking of the Titanic
Telegraph.co.uk ^

Posted on 09/22/2010 1:59:39 PM PDT by Blue Turtle

'Titanic was launched at a time when the world was moving from sailing ships to steam ships. My grandfather, like the other senior officers on Titanic, had started out on sailing ships. And on sailing ships, they steered by what is known as “Tiller Orders” which means that if you want to go one way, you push the tiller the other way. [So if you want to go left, you push right.] It sounds counter-intuitive now, but that is what Tiller Orders were. Whereas with “Rudder Orders’ which is what steam ships used, it is like driving a car. You steer the way you want to go. It gets more confusing because, even though Titanic was a steam ship, at that time on the North Atlantic they were still using Tiller Orders. Therefore Murdoch gave the command in Tiller Orders but Hitchins, in a panic, reverted to the Rudder Orders he had been trained in. They only had four minutes to change course and by the time Murdoch spotted Hitchins’ mistake and then tried to rectify it, it was too late.’

The “real” truth about the titanic that the government doesn’t want you to know.

There’s videos and everything. Even a “scientific” experiment.

Second posting of this today.

Many prior FReeper posts pointed out the obvious — that ‘sailing vessels’ (think the USS Constitution and the Charles W Morgan) had ship’s wheels way back in the early 1800s. Tillers had been out of use on ships of any size for generations.

Sorry, but this story doesn’t pass the smell test.

The site you link to has this sentence at the top —

“This site is dedicated to exposing the truth about the government’s involvement in the sinking of the Titanic. Specifically, that they did it (and by “they” I mean Jews).”

“the Jews” ???

Feeling anti-Semitic today?

I hit the abuse button for you.

They had a Truther movement back then? Wait...was 9/11 a cover-up for the sinking of the Titanic? Speaking of titanic, where's Michael Moore when you need him?

Something odd about this story. The the first steam ship crossed the Atlantic in 1837 and the definitive transition from sail to steam occurred at roughly the same time as the American Civil War, although there were a few sailing ships around until the turn of that century. The Titanic went down in 1912.

I didn’t infer sarcasm; and the poster didn’t offer the usual /sarcasm off tag per normal for FReepers.

I still think the link is suspect.

I thought the problem was that the navigation orders were "Turn left at big iceberg that look like bear, then turn right at big bear that look like iceberg."

I can’t speak for Hitchin’s actions, but Charles Brown wrote a great book about how the ship was well and truly sunk when Ismay ordered Smith to steam for Halifax, NS-in essence, driving the ship under. This is proven by the fact that Ismay ordered trains to pick up passengers in Halifax.

No, the sinking of the Titanic was George W. Bush’s fault.
