Law would crack down on roaring motorcycles (Another reason to hate California)
MSNBC ^ | 21 September 2010 | ALEJANDRA MOLINA

Posted on 09/22/2010 12:56:11 AM PDT by Terrence DoGood

"As the popularity of motorcycles increases, loud pipes become offensive to the general public out there," Scott added.

The roaring motorcycles -- primarily Harleys -- have led to a bill that would target motorcyclists who remove factory-installed emission control devices mandated by the federal government and replace them with custom, aftermarket parts that often make their bikes louder and more polluting.

SB 435 had been approved by the state legislature and now is sitting on the Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk. The Harley-riding governor has until Sept. 30 to sign the bill into law or veto it.

If the governor puts his stamp of approval on the measure, motorcyclists would be required to post a visible, unaltered Environment Protection Agency stamp to confirm the exhaust system is clean burning and does not exceed 80 decibels -- about the same noise level as a vacuum cleaner. The stamp would only be required for motorcycles and aftermarket parts made after 2013.

"The noise caused by illegally modified motorcycle exhaust systems is a major quality of life issue across the state," said state Sen. Fran Pavley, a Democrat from Agoura Hills. "Basic common sense and decency dictates that when a motorcycle drives by and sets off every car alarm on the street, that is too loud

First-time offenders would be fined up to $100; tickets could be voided if the owners bring their bikes back into compliance. Subsequent infractions would be subject to fines of $100 to $250.

Good lord, let it go. Its clear to me that there’s a lot of wimps here among the FR members, but thats ok. I ride a bike - big deal.

I happen to love riding my Harley - especially in close proximity to wimpy lib-tards. The fact that you may think my pipes are “loud” doesn’t bother me one damn bit. As a matter of fact, I enjoy anoying busy-bodies and their girly-man friends as often as I can.

It sometimes seems that liberalism is at its simplest, nothing more than an ideological hostility, to testosterone.

In other words penis envy. Envy is leftism in thought, hostility is leftism in action. Envy can easily jump from thought into action. E=mc2, where E is envy, m is malevolence, and c is crowd size.

As a general rule, the louder the bike the smaller the d***.

This rule can be extended to include pickups with large wheels.

“I ride a bike - big deal.”

But it is a big deal to you and most other bike riders.

You failed to make a mark in the world, so you ride your bikes (which are hilariously overpriced)for the perception that you really are like the sociopathic “biker gangs” who get “respect” through their illegal activities and gang-violence. It’s compensating behavior.

The wimps are really on the bikes - the loudness of the bike represents the loudness of the tantrum they are throwing at the world for not thinking they are as wonderful as their mothers think they are.

Personally, I do agree that these laws are unnecessary (as most new laws are) - the best thing to do with a tantrum - whether a child or a man-child biker is to ignore it.

There. Did I get the psychology at least approximately correct?

Intentionally making excessive noise and destroying the quality of life of one’s neighbors is the opposite of manly. It is the behavior of immature, spoiled, sissy, punks whose fathers never taught them how to be men.

Loud bikers are no different than the thugs who blast hip-hop on their car stereos. Trashy and rude is not manly. Real men stand up to these thugs.

AMEN! I agree that laws designed to protect brains so feeble that the cause their owners to think riding without a helmet is a good idea are pointless. Helmet laws should be repealed but not one dime of taxpayer dollars should go to treating the head injuries of helmetless riders.

Noisy bikers violate the rights of others and should not be permitted to do so.

Inform them of your presence with this horn and they'll probably ruin their shorts as they drive off the road..

‘10 Electra Glide. Well we bikers can be good neighbors or not. I worked in Navy engine rooms for 20 years - ear plugs and all and noise of any sort bothers me. My hearing is very good considering. So on my street is a house where a woman lives who has parties mid-week all hours of the night. These parties generally include a bunch of bikers on Harley, Victory, and other v-twin bikes - many of them have removed the mufflers for straight pipes.

I have a job and can’t party on Tuesday till 2 AM so it pretty much pisses me off when these folks leave the party and have no consideration for me or anyone else on the street. The cops are never around at 2 AM by the way.

At off hours I roll my bike to the street before I start it and almost idle out of the neighborhood. I am considerate of others.

Most bikers are, but there is that small minority (I don’t give a damn if you like the noise or not attitude) who have created this problem. The solution to the problem will affect everyone, not just the inconsiderate.

This has nothing to do with manliness, or macho, or being a biker - it has to do with being a neighbor and consideration.

I expect all states will eventually have such laws which will be enforced and if just enforced on Harley’s then it is because a few inconsiderate asses brought it upon ourselves.

You think you should be allowed to make as much noise as you like? Hell no.

The thing is CA has noise laws already on the books and have had them since I can remember(I am 68). When I was in HS in the 50s we had to watch out for cops if we had loud pipes on either our cars or our motocycles, because they would ticket you if they thought they were to loud. This new law is just another way to get more tax money out of the people of CA and serves no useful purpose as it is a redundant law. It is not the people's fault if the cops refuse to enforce the laws already on the books.

The loud bikers are even worse. At least the gangstas leave themselves the option of lowering the volume, in case they have a spasm of humanity and decide to be considerate of others. The loud bikers modify their bikes so that they are always a nuisance while operated.

“Did I get the psychology at least approximately correct”? Hardly, I bought my first bike, a 2008 Harley-Davidson Softail Nightrain as a gift to myself 3-years ago. I had just returned from a deployment and I thought I earned it. To say my wife was pissed would be the ultimate understatement, but like the level headed woman I knew here to be, she quickly got over it. You’re right about one thing, it was expensive as hell, but hey it’s my money and it’s worth every damn penny I gave the bank.

When I fly into BWI next week (I’m leaving Bagram Afghanistan this coming Tuesday) and I’ll be looking forward to riding with all my sociopathic “gang” buddies that you assume bikers are all part of. 21-years in the uniform of the US military and I’d wager I’ve left a bigger mark than you my friend.

That is bull. Motorcycles are easily seen by drivers. But, for arguments sake, if we assume they are so “invisible” that they need to be modified to make obscene amounts of noise to be safe, then they should be banned from the roads entirely.

I am not proposing this, just pointing out how ridiculous the “we make our bikes loud for safety” claim is.
