The new Fox News poll of the Delaware Senate race shows Democratic nominee Chris Coons continuing to enjoy a double-digit lead against Republican Christine O'Donnell.
The numbers: Coons 54%, O'Donnell 39%. The survey of likely voters has a ±3% margin of error. There is no previous Fox News poll of this race. However, this poll was conducted through a Rasmussen offshoot, Pulse Opinion Research, which performs made-to-order robopolls. The previous Rasmussen poll from last week, taken right after O'Donnell's upset win in the primary over moderate Congressman Mike Castle, gave Coons a lead of 53%-42%.
This poll also confirms the conventional wisdom that Republican voters threw away a certain pickup of this seat. The poll asks voters to suppose that Castle had been the GOP nominee -- and in that match-up he leads Coons by a whopping 48%-33%. In addition, only 33% of respondents said that O'Donnell is qualified to be a Senator, to 60% who say she is not qualified. This compares to a 59%-27% margin for Coons, the county executive of Delaware's largest county, which contains a majority of the state's population.
The TPM Poll Average gives Coons a lead of 53.7%-39.3% against O'Donnell. And just for comparison, the average for a Castle-Coons race gives Castle a lead of 46.4%-35.4% over the Democrat.
It may be that Delaware will elect a democrat. And if Castle had won the nomination and election, it would be close to the same outcome. On minor stuff, Castle would vote GOP, but he would have voted demoncrat on the big stuff - and in doing so, destroyed the little brand name left for the GOP.
It doesn’t do conservatives any good to have a Republican senator voting for tax increases, abortion on demand, etc.
I’m not interested in GOP power just for the sake of power. If the GOP won’t do anything conservative with it, who cares?
It is impressive that the lead is not bigger here at the start. She will have funding. Her foe is not very good and does not have the advantage of incumbancy. Few of his negatives have gotten much attention. All of the negatives about her have been fully vetted. So ... there is really no place to go but up.
If she runs a flawless campaign, she can win. I’m not a fan of moral victories, but this will end up rather close come November even if she runs a less-than-flawless campaign. The Dems will have to spend a lot, a lot, a lot of money defending this seat. They simply can NOT afford to lose it.
I predict that this will narrow, and as it does it will turn into one of the hardest fought and most closely watched campaigns of the fall. A victory for the Republican Party here would make an upset for the ages.

It can be done.
Oh please n00b, the witchcraft story is silly. So I guess you will vote for the bearded marxist.
A pox on you.
voters threw away Castle, SPECIFICALLY.
The GOP is clueless, but they stopped representing their base after Reagan left.
Who cares? Delaware is full of a bunch of Socialist idiots. Save the herd and ignore the fallen sow.
“I would have voted for her in the primary, but that witchcraft story just blunted any positive momentum she had.”
In my view, the witchcraft thing is not a big deal. It was in High School, a long time ago, and she apparently was like most of us, searching, trying to figure things out.
The mouse with the human brain, that was 3 years ago, on O’Reilly. That throws up the red flag.
45 days : )
She can have some killer ads given all the slop that’s out there in this race. Ad genius needed.
“Castle is GONE! Thats a win any way you slice it. Way to go Christine!”
Great point - we’ve already won in that respect. We need to elect conservatives but we also need to get rid of Rinos.
Rinos better either fall in line or they will be out - great message was just sent.
Scott Brown ran a perfect campaign...literally, a perfect campaign.
Recycling this post from another thread:
Voiceover: “Coons has said he was just a marxist in college.” Show his Essay Title Bearded Marxist and the article.
“But he acted with Marxist organizations, working for them well into his 20s.” Cut to pictures of him in Africa.
“He has continued this philosophy in his policies as an elected official”: Tax Raise 1, Tax Raise 2, Tax Raise 3.
“Dont we have enough big spenders in the Senate already?”
Clean cut picture of Christine.
I agree that O’Donnell will close this race significantly. She has absorbed very serious body blows from Rove, Krauthammer and the GOP establishment. All of the news has essentially been the meme that she’s a kook, flake, and now witch . Short of Rove, however, this is shifting. She was running essentially her campaign out of her kitchen with 1 or 2 staffers. There was a piece yesterday on yahoo about her campaign now morphing into a true, first class, senatorial campaign complete with serious, experienced managers and staffers. Check out her website (christine2010.com) - it’s significantly more developed than just 48 hrs ago and is no longer amateurish. Plus, now with a couple million $ on hand and the prospect of raising more quickly, she has started ad campaigns. These will only increase. Dems don’t believe this is a “gimme” election. Note that Biden has already been in Del. campaigning w/Reid’s pet. No GOP heavies have come to Del. yet. That will change soon.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the race is in single digits by as soon as next week.
She needs MORE EFFECTIVE ADS....hitting hard and making the point. SHE HAS THE MONEY AND SHOULD START USING IT. (I viewed one earlier and it was too vanilla). I SURE HOPE SHE HAS A GOOD CAMPAIGN MANAGER AND PR MAN/WOMAN. GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!!!!
Well let’s just toss out every politician based on stupid s—t they did in high school.
a mouse with a head that big would be really scary. It is hard to top that.
fyi, the witchcraft story dates back to when she was in high school.
