South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint is on former House majority leader Dick Armeys list of Republicans he could support for president in 2012.
Asked during a panel discussion Friday night on the Tea Party movement to name several leaders he would like to see challenge President Obama, he also listed Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Theres no shortage of good people, said Armey, the chairman of FreedomWorks, a free-market group helping to organize this weekends Tea Party 9/12 Taxpayer March on Washington.
Armey also suggested that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is not his ideal candidate in 2012. Theres nobody from Alaska on my list, he said.
He did, however, go on to say that hed prefer Palin as president to the White Houses current occupant.
His comments came during a discussion titled Examining the Tea Party at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. with The Daily Callers Tucker Carlson, the New York Times Kate Zernike and Harvard professor Jill Lepore.
I resent the fact that here's a guy who has never truly been a Conservative, go out on TV and lecture to Conservatives on how to do this or that, or how to win elections.
He did that back in 2008 on the panel of ABC's This Week, and Mark Levin asked Armey "Who died and made you the head of the Conservative movement?"
Now that he's been out of power in Washington for a while, he's trying to remain relevant somehow and trying to feather he own nest along the way.
At some time or another - and the candle grows short - Governor Palin is going to have to engage. The time for shadowboxing is over. Mr. Armey has done her a favor and challenged her leadership. He has taken a position. She will meet the challenge or default. This is her opportunity.
Nobody, and certainly not a pissant, has-been like Armey, will determine Sarah’s next move. She is completely focused on November’s elections, just like the rest of us ought to be.
1.) Infiltrate Tea Party, claim leadership role. Or just associate oneself with them in some way.
2.) Tout merits of establishment Presidential candidates (Pawlenty, Daniels).
3.) Cover your Conservative bases by also selecting two people popular with the base who you know aren't running in 2012 (DeMint, Christie).
4.) Knock grassroots Conservative who is running (Palin).
5.) Say “But anyone is better than Obama,” because you expect grassroots to all “come on board” when establishment pick wins nomination.
I am already getting tired of this template. We're still two years out, and it's already worn-out.
Best post I’ve seen! You have the establishment NAILED.
Then good ol' boy Dick is not nearly as smart as he thinks he is...
Yeah, but taking a ponderous warhorse like DeMint to the Kentucky Derby while leaving its lightning fast filly like Palin in the stable is just plain stupid.
Concur Sir !!
You said it, brother!
All the action I’m interested in happens after the sun goes down...lol. Today might be an exception.
Armey used to be my representative. In the one “town hall” meeting I attended, I got the impression he was sexist.
Yes, great post by TitansAFC. Keen insight!
I thought Jeb Henserling won that seat. Was that another district?
You know, it really is ok for people to have opinions that differ from your own. Attempts to enforce uniformity of thought and opinion are Leftist and totalitarian impulses. Just saying...
So you're supporting the mushy RINO wing of the GOP I see....
The Tea Party movement loses credibility as long as Dick Armey and his liberal Freedom Works group hangs around.
When you look at the candidates he is supporting....most are Liberal RINOs. And, if I were Jim DeMint...I would not be anywhere near Dick Armey in 2012....Liberal RINOs hang around Armey
