Someone is going to have to. Anyone who claims that they can balance the budget without tackling entitlements like Social Security or Medicare is delusional.

I’ve told my liberal friends for years they were going to pull this shell game.

Oh, no said they. Only the evil Republicans want to “steal” my social security (by actually trying to fix it).

They adamantly refuse to see the HC takeover as anything but more “free” stuff for everyone except the evil rich, who are now going to get their due.

They need to do something.
They need to honor the commitment made to people who have paid in for many years and no longer have enough working years left to seek an alternative retirement path.
They need to allow younger people to opt out of the system.

Social Security is a ponzi scheme. It was a mistake. I'd like to see a solution that doesn't screw over the older workers -- but we need to recognize that Social Security cannot be "fixed" in any meaningful way. It was always a fraud.

We need to phase out Socialist Security and the sooner the better. It has no place in a nation of free people.

Imagine a free America 3-5 years down the road without socialist schemes like Socialist Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

He's ALREADY cut Social Security - NO COLA for 3 yrs - altho the senate/congress gets theirs - and I'll bet gov’t employees got a nice raise.

If they want to reign in SS costs - how about booting the 100’s thousands of druggies, alcoholics and BiPolars off - the ones, especially, that are ‘clean’ - but just lay back and continue to not only get the $$$ but FAR better coverage than seniors, who worked all their lives...

Seniors still get a chunk taken out each month for Medicare - rises every year - now about $100...plus a deductible, plus 20% co-pay, plus drugs not covered, plus office visits not covered, plus no ‘counseling’ covered.

ALL of the above is covered, 100%, for the druggies, etc.

I know far too many 20-30-40 year olds, in perfect health, who just lay back on the dole - have far more ‘discretionary funds’ than most of us...can just self-fill a questionnaire every 7 years - SEVEN - and get a pass for another 7.

How sweet it is. Of course, these are the dependent=voters for the Rats.
We need to start listing them as a voting block:

Democrats
Republicans
Independents
Dependents aka “Dole Dependents”

This doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. For years, I’ve known that SS was unsustainable and that the Gen X and Yers were going to get a huge screw job if the government tried to maintain SS benefits at current levels.

I wouldn’t lose ANY sleep if SS were terminated now, even though I am broke and quickly closing in on retirement age. The culprits in this theft of astronomical proportions is every Congress since the 60s who spent SS into insolvency.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it to my dying day - the largest collection of white collar criminals is in the US Congress. If we put bars on the Capitol Bilding, we would have approximately 90% of the criminal element in America locked up!!

Receiving an annuity like payment for money we were FORCED to payout is not socialism. A stupid plan yes. An unconstitutional plan, more than likely.

Giving money to people who did not contribute is socialism.

Before any SS dollars are touched we have to force our government to stop every penny being given to those in this country illegally.

Before any SS dollars are touched we have to force our government to stop every penny being given to foreign countries.

Get our troops out of Germany, Japan, S. Korea and save some more money.

If SS needs to be modified/eliminated, and I think it sure does, it must be done for those entering the labor force not for those who have had money forcibly taken for SS for over 45 years.

If they touch my money, which was to be in a trust fund and is not, they will realize why we have a 2nd Amendment.

RE :”President Obama is playing “Watch the Birdie” with Americans over the age of 50, diverting their attention with handouts and scare tactics to hide in plain sight the enormous damage his policies are doing to the retirement safety net. Leaks indicate that among the options being considered are delaying the retirement age (sounds like a panacea to bureaucratic pencil pushers who never did a day of hard labor in their lives), changing the basic benefit formula to reduce future benefits, and delaying or slashing COLAs. Apparently, President Obama’s concept of spreading the wealth includes sacking both the Medicare and Social Security systems on which America’s retirees have come to rely. That’s some progressive vision of “fiscal responsibility:” Put seniors out in the cold and into an early grave.

Democrats are attacking Republicans like Sharon Angle and Boehner (R - OH) for proposing cutting/privatizing SS when this is EXACTLY what Obama plans on doing (cutting it anyway) after the election. I never can figure out why Republicans let the democrats get away with this. Why would you cut SS (or raise taxes as democrats will propose) while leaving retired federal employees living like kings at our expense? Their retirement is a huge unfunded deficit that buys us nothing.

The sad thing is that over the course of my working life, I paid in far more on social security than I’ll ever get out of it. If I had been permitted to put it into a private investment account, the return would have been much larger.

Only problem was that there is actually no social security trust fund. Instead, Congress spends it all on greasing their supporters’ palms and other current expenses.

Now the bill is coming due. So, we have paid in all our lives, and now they will proceed to screw us.

Social Security (and I’m eligible, altho perhaps foolishly waiting ‘til my benefits are larger) is too big a part of the total budget. Medicare is even worse from an actuarial point of view.

That said, I don’t want Obama deciding how to fix it. There is some relationship between the SS benefits and the work contributions made. Obama wants to redistribute it to people who haven’t contributed, but whose votes he thinks can be permanently bought (illegals, chronically unemployed, etc).

I suppose the AARP will jump on board with this too, since they were in favor of the healthcare takeover.

So what does this do to the culture?

Let’s consider that for a moment....

all of a sudden Grandma or Grandpa can’t afford their elderly single lifestyle, can’t afford that retirement community etc.

So where will they turn...to the current modern family. What happens if they move in with the kids? Some cases will be difficult to endure, but if things are going badly all around, it could be a good thing to restore the idea of family.

What happens if the left loses their free wheeling social culture?

This could really be a very good thing for putting family and God back into the American family.

I hope that if the pubs take over congress that they will bring legislation to the floor cutting the presidents pension in half and make the minimum age to collect it the same as SS.
