Miller concerned Murkowski will 'pull an Al Franken'
The Hill ^ | 08/27/10 | Jordan Fabian

Joe Miller, the Republican candidate who is poised to knock off Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) in a primary contest, said Thursday he is concerned she will launch a protracted legal battle to save her seat.

Miller, an Iraq war veteran who received the backing of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), emerged from the election Tuesday night with a narrow lead over Murkowski, an incumbent who assumed the seat from her father.

But officials are still counting absentee ballots in the close race and a lawyer for the GOP Senate campaign committee is heading to Alaska to assist the senator.

"We are looking right now to make sure that the election - that the votes - are accounted for fairly, without any type of game play," Miller said in an interview on Fox Business Network. "It concerns us any time somebody lawyers up and tries to pull an Al Franken, if you will. We are very concerned that there may be some attempt here to skew the results."

I can understand Joe Miller's concern about the GOP machine trying to manipulate the situation. I also know that the GOP Senate Election committee is probably going to take a side on this one when they shouldn't.

However I don't think that Mr. Miller helps himself with these statements. He should have keep his concerns private while looking for help in making sure that the results are counted fairly.

Invocating the name of Al Franken will result in unnecessary turmoil in his quest to join a body which is still not recovered from the seating of Senator Franken.

There is no need to cause problems for himself. The DEMs may still control the U.S. Senate even if he wins the general Election in November.

I don’t follow you? WHY shouldn’t he invoke the name of Al Franken? What does “dems may still control the U.S. Senate” have to do with him speaking the truth?

I am all for him sounding the alarm of the tone deaf NRSC. Florida learned all too well what this group is all about. Stop feeding the Beast! Donate to candidates only.

However I don't think that Mr. Miller helps himself with these statements.

The only way to make cockroaches scatter is to shine a light on them. He did the right thing by voicing concern and allowing the process to move forward, with his concern known.

Your comments are very easy for you to say. You are not the one who could be cheated out of a hard-fought victory.

You are asking Miller to be passive while his opponent is obviously preparing to "Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war."

Murkowski should be the gracious one and allow the counting to go forward without her throwing a temper tantrum.

Miller is a military vet and can read an enemy's preparations for battle.

I see no problem with him making this statement. The next step is to see where things go from here. All he did is put it out there and others will have it in the backs of their minds as they work through the process. I’m sure the republican party wouldn’t want to be viewed as pulling a Franken after all the howling we did in Minnesota when it happened to us.

Given the way the national GOP has gone out of its way to support “ruling class” RINOs and acknowledging the bald-faced nepotism of a father appointing his own daughter to Senate seat, I think Joe Miller has every right to be very concerned, AND to take preemptive action against the kind of good-ol’ boy/girl shenanigans the GOP is depressingly famous for.

Sarah epitomizes the kind of Conservative values that are utterly anathema to the East Coast elite in both parties, and even more than hate the idea of one of their own losing, they hate the increased credibility and gravitas she will gain if she and the Tea Party knock another RINO out of office.

That’s the way I see it and I strongly encourage Miller and his team to keep their eyes constantly on the ball with this.

What does “dems may still control the U.S. Senate” have to do with him speaking the truth?

Or, exposing corruption and cronyism within the Republican Party? Just because someone has an "R" after their name doesn't automatically make them pure as the driven snow. There are dozens and dozens of examples of that this year alone.....

. . . pulling a Franken . . .

And so another addition to Webster's Dictionary.

A Franken: Voter fraud; Recount votes until you get the result you want; use the courts to help you get the result you want; whining, whining and more whinging until you get the result want.

I doubt that Alaska has the number of felons and voter fraud that was present in MN, which is likely how Franken “won”. But “lawyering up” like Murkowski is doing sounds scary.

And it’s troubling that the nationl GOP is favoring the ruling class candidate over her opponent. I’m guessing this GOP committee is not that headed by Jim DeMint.

Nope. This is brilliant and smart strategy.

“GOP Senate campaign committee is heading to Alaska to assist the senator.” RSCC exists to elect Republicans, not keep incumbents in power.

This RINOism simply makes them look like donkey’s. Miller’s right to invoke the ‘Al Franken’ moniker.

The satire is a winning strategy. It embarrasses the RSCC, pressurizes Murkowski to concede, and cements Franken’s place in politics as a thief, idiot and liar.

Couldn’t be more perfect. Pour it on!

Here’s DeMint’s group, to which I referred (the Senate Conservatives Fund). Murkowski scored only 50% with his group!

You are right about R corruption. But I was specifically asking wmileo what is the connection between dem senate majority and whether Miller should openly speak the truth (by invoking Dr. Voter Fraud) regarding his fears about Murkowski’s next move.

Maybe I misunderstood him and I was just asking for clarification.

I disagree. This was a pre-emptive strike. A measured and rational response to the shennanigans that we’ve seen in the last few years.

The NRSC doesn’t even show Miller running in AK.

Exactly. This is stopped when people make it unacceptable. When the even thinking of cheating know there will be loud and continuous opposition.

The worst thing conservatives do is buy into the theme they will get away with it. See that all the time and I'm sick of it. That negative mindset brings down societies. It is why Mexico is what it is, because good people believe the system is so rigged the cheaters and the corrupt cannot be beaten.
