Most of Americas Ten Dead Cities were once major manufacturing hubs and others were important ports or financial services centers. The downfall of one city, New Orleans, began in the 1970s, but was accelerated by Hurricane Katrina.
Notably, the rise of inexpensive manufacturing in Japan destroyed the ability of the industrial cities on this list to effectively compete in the global marketplace. Foreign business activity and US government policy were two of the three major blows that caused the downfall of these cities. The third was the labor movement and its demands for higher compensation which ballooned the costs of manufacturing in many of these cities as well.
#1. Buffalo
#2. Flint
#3. Hartford
#4. Cleveland
#5. New Orleans
#6. Detroit
#7. Albany
#8. Atlantic City
#9. Allentown
#10. Galveston.

Find the worst places in the country based on crime, corruption, poverty, unemployment or what have you and you will find an inconvenient demographic and political truth.

Yes, in truth we all know this but nowadays we are reduced to talking in code. Political Correctness is so damn powerful.

How dare you think something so politically incorrect (but factually correct)! You are found guilty of "thought crimes against protected classes of humanity".
Yes we have the Vulcan Mind Meld going on here. Isn't it amazing to read all the comments about cheap foreign labor, corrupt government, lousy and greedy unions, bad politicians, scum bag Democrats, planetary alignment and the like. Yes these things are factors. However these are problems that can be overcome. It's been done before in various places and other circumstances. Most here probably know the real reasons for these abysmal locations. They are to PC to say what we know to be the truth. Guys like you and I (fools I guess) rush in where angels fear to tread.

I was born and raised in Flint. 60 years of liberal democrat leadership has destroyed that city.

The sad thing is, Detroit is not the only city that once was thriving, and is no longer. The whole country has been going downhill for decades in terms of manufacturing. Much of the country thinks coffee houses and trendy shops and restaurants will save us. We used to actually build things here. Pittsburgh is doing OK, but from healthcare (which keeps closing hospitals) and education (which seems to educate many of our enemies) and government. God help us if we ever have another major war like WWII.
