Free speech? Obama song gets coach fired
gopusa ^ | Today

America... the land of the free and the home of the brave. At least that's what we hear when we sing the National Anthem.

Wait... are we still allowed to sing that song and express our patriotism? I know we are still the home of the brave, but it's become clearer that we are no longer the land of the free. Just ask "former" middle school football coach Bryan Glover, who wrote a song about Barack Obama and sent it to people on his e-mail list. Where did this expression of free speech land him?

The unemployment line, that's where.

As reported by OneNewsNow.com, Glover, a 26-year-old Christian, co-wrote the song "When You're Holding a Hammer, Everything Looks Like a Nail." The song "takes a dig at the current administration and what he believes to be the wrong moves for the U.S." According to the report, Glover sent the song to everyone in his personal e-mail list, "which included parents from Grassland Middle School, where he coached football."

That's when the trouble began. Within 90 minutes of sending out the song, Glover heard from his head coach that parents were asking that Glover be fired.

"When the coach first called me, he said his phone was blown up with parents saying that I was being politically incorrect -- quote, unquote -- if you will, and that some of them were even reading into racial overtones in the song," Glover explains.

Listen to the song for yourself and see if there is ANY reference to race in it at all. Why do people have to knee-jerk and claim racism just because someone doesn't like Obama? It's because they are so enamored with him and his socialist programs that they think anyone who doesn't like him must be a racist.

I’ve moderated a few boards as well and I almost never, ever, edited or deleted posts. The only time I’d do it is if it contained stuff that could get the board removed / suspended / in legal trouble.

Much like FR, we had a no porn and no potty mouth policy. That's typically all we would remove. Occasionally, someone would post copyrighted material.

LIBERALS GO NOT ALLOW DISSENT!

TRUE. TRUE. And it is okay to destroy others over a difference of opinion. It is how liberals think.

God help us in our day, in Jesus name, amen..

The issue here is that this fella did this on his own time, with his own computer, to his personal email list. It’s a private matter and the school had absolutely no business involving itself.

If he had sent this to his family and friends that'd be one thing. The email list in question contained parents of kids from his school. Unfortunately, in society the way it is, that makes it the school's business. Yes, there are as you say TRUE conservatives here who would defend anyone in cases like this. And if you don't think a lot of the people here would get their panties in a bunch if the content were different well, I think you're wrong.

Hire a private detective. Have everyone who complained followed. If they do anything shady. Call their boss and have them fired.

Ummmm ... I'm not sure what inalienable right we are defending here?

The right to do a dumb thing?

The right to not be accountable?

As I posted before:

Your "personal e-mail list" should be limited to your "personal friends".

His was not.

His "personal e-mail list", included "parents from Grassland Middle School, where he coached football."

If you send your political opinions to your personal friends on your "personal e-mail list": No problem.

If you send your political opinions to a list of your employer's clients that you copied and pasted into the list of your personal friends on your "personal e-mail list": Big problem.

His defense should be as follows:

"I intended to send a partisan political joke to my personal friends and forgot that that I had copied and pasted a group of the parents of my students on a "personal list" that should have been strictly personal.

I am sorry and I apologize. Such a mishap will not happen again.

I will ensure that, in the future, "personal mail lists" and "working mailing lists" will remain separate on my computer."

Well, he’s in trouble because he forgot to include MMMMMM....MMMMMM....MMMMMM in his lyrics.

Which right?

The constitutional right to free speech only prevents legal repercussions against a person from the government, not to repercussions from private individuals or employees. You can try to wear an "I hate Obama t-shirt" to work. The Government cannot put you in jail for doing it. But if your boss doesn't like it he has every right to fire you. And if company policy prohibits political activity while on the job he may even have the explicit duty to fire you.

Sorry. I’ve received much much worse than this in emails, both personal and work. This is kids stuff and not even remotely close to being worthy of firing the guy over.

Did this guy work at a private school? If not then he worked for the government. So sez the Government when they rule that Prayer cannot be done in schools.

Actions have consequences - he had to have known that not everyone thinks like him.

I say “Shut up and sing” when it comes to liberals, and I say “Shut up and coach” when it comes to something like this.

You are making a pretty big leap there, hoss. He emailed to a list “which included parents from Grassland Middle School, where he coached football.”

It doesn’t say ALL parents or that he obtained them from a school list. If the guy had some of their emails because he knew them, or they had emailed HIM about putting little Johnny in at quarterback, that’s a whole different story.

This guy was a coach, not a teacher. I coached a LOT of baseball and football (about 20 years worth) and knew almost everyone in town ... and some liked me, some didn’t (hard to believe, I know) but if there was an issue like this, it would have come up first in a meeting.

The timing of this subject is uncanny. I got an idea for a song in my head a few weeks ago....went to sleep with it, woke up with it...just no getting it out of my head. So I penned the lyrics, and submitted it for copyright just last night.
The style of the accompanying music could be depression era blues, new orleans jazz, or even Charlie Daniels. Now that I have it copyrighted I can post the lyrics. If anyone has an idea or connection to get this to the right people, please have at it.
Obam He Gonna Be Our President (C)2010

Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna be our pre-si-dent
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna bring us hope and change
Aint gonna worry bout the mortgage or the car havin gas
From now on we're gonna sit on our YES WE CAN!
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna give us every-thing
---------------------------------------------------------
He promised if e-lected
he would stick it to the man
But we didn't know he meant
The man that owned the plant

Now the factory's closed
All the jobs went south
Life is pretty rotten livin - hand to mouth
Uh-oh Oh-bam-a you sure stuck it to the man

CHORUS
---------------------------------------------------------
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna be our pre-si-dent
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna bring us hope and change
Aint gonna worry bout the mortgage or the car havin gas
From now on we're gonna sit on our YES WE CAN!
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna give us every-thing
---------------------------------------------------------

He gave a purdy speech
yeah he talked about hope and change
But how were we to know he meant
a socialist u-to-pi-ay

Now we're losin our homes
and the market's crashed
A depression is a comin and it's - a comin fast
Oh no Oh-bam-a we didn't need that kind of change

CHORUS
---------------------------------------------------------
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna be our pre-si-dent
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna bring us hope and change
Aint gonna worry bout the mortgage or the car havin gas
From now on we're gonna sit on our YES WE CAN!
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna give us every-thing
---------------------------------------------------------

He says that it's all Bush's fault
he tells us every day
But Bush left town two years ago
so how is Bush to blame

Obama spent the country so far into to debt
Now he thinks he's gonna fix it with a - a printing press
Oh no Oh-bam-a you're gonna bankrupt the USA

CHORUS
---------------------------------------------------------
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna be our pre-si-dent
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna bring us hope and change
Aint gonna worry bout the mortgage or the car havin gas
From now on we're gonna sit on our YES WE CAN!
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna give us every-thing
---------------------------------------------------------

Now people need to ask
hows that hope n change workin out
But Unless you're in the government well
the bottoms fallin out

And if workin for the governemnt is all that's left
It's kinda like a snake just a eatin itself
Oh no Oh-bam-a ya only brought us rope and chains

CHORUS
---------------------------------------------------------
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna be our pre-si-dent
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna bring us hope and change
Aint gonna worry bout the mortgage or the car havin gas
From now on we're gonna sit on our YES WE CAN!
Ohhh Oh-bam-a he gonna give us every-thing

Right, you have to do it in secret, or you’ll lose your job. Just like the Soviet Union.

What we’re seeing here is a standard FR debate on “free speech” issues.

You’re correct, there are folks who would call for his head, didn’t mean to infer otherwise.

I don’t see where the parents have any standing in the matter to demand he be fired for a personal email message that contained nothing truly offensive or criminal. As another poster mentioned, you DON’T have the right to NOT be offended in this country.

It’s a simple matter of doing one of two things; 1) Hit the DELETE key, 2) ask the sender to remove them from his list.

The abject immaturity displayed by these “people” is absolutely stunning. But, since they appear to be 0 supporters, I’m not surprised anymore.

I stand by my original assertion, I hope the “collective” loses their “collective” asses on this.

I think the people who forced this man out of his livelihood are bastards. How would they like it if they lost their jobs for something they said? It’s what the Left deigns to call “McCarthyism”.

Okay, now I need a primer on political correctness and racial inappropriateness. I don't see either. I do see a political statement...it is political in the way it infers Obama is not a good President. Actually I think the rhyme is kind of cute.

I notice “Obama” is still a non word in spell check. Could it be FR is making a political statement? :^)

After musing on this for a bit, a thought struck me! Were the people responsible for a large group of students singing that “Mmmmm - Mmmmm - Mmmmmm, Barak Hussein Obama” song fired from their TEACHING positions? IIRC, there was a large outcry over that too. So, if the message is one that is agreeable with liberals you get to keep your job, but if the message angers liberals you get fired? So much for equity in America!!!

That sunovabich Ward Churchill spread communist venom in schools FOR YEARS ... do we need to mention William Ayers? ...and now we are seriously talking about this poor guy getting the ax for writing a song that has NO venom in it? Just happens to contain an anti-Obama message?

Good grief.
