Obama: GOP trying to destroy Social Security
Associated Press ^ | 8-14-10 | Erica Werner

President Barack Obama used the anniversary of Social Security to trumpet Democrats' support for the popular program and accuse Republicans of trying to destroy it.

Seventy-five years after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security into law, Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday: "We have an obligation to keep that promise, to safeguard Social Security for our seniors, people with disabilities and all Americans — today, tomorrow and forever."

Some Republican leaders in Congress are "pushing to make privatizing Social Security a key part of their legislative agenda if they win a majority in Congress this fall," Obama said.

He contended that such privatization was "an ill-conceived idea that would add trillions of dollars to our budget deficit while tying your benefits to the whims of Wall Street traders and the ups and downs of the stock market."

No argument here, but the Republican party must stay ever vigilant, and not hand the Democrats a gun to shoot them with.

This area of MD Howard county is a landlord/homeowners dream. The government is endlessly hiring.

I for one would like to have the option to remove myself from the “obligation” of the government paying me social security. I am in my middle 40s and have been paying in since I was 16. If I was given the option to have the government stop taking the s.s. taxes from my paycheck, I would waive any and all claims on the money already paid in on my behalf, thus reducing the governments future debt obligation. I would think that there would be many that would like to have that option...

Just some thoughts

After paying all of these taxes, we’ll all be on food stamps!

Nope, they're using food stamp money to increase the pay of state employees and teachers. My ex makes $80K per year as a teacher, and will retire with $60K per year teacher pension and another $10K per year Social Security, plus another $800K in retirement account.

Me? Worked insurance 16 years, made over $50K last three, pension $3K per year. 401(k) that I started with $10K over the years (half went to ex) converted to IRA, will pay more than my defined benefits retirement.

But SS is scheduled (so far) to pay more than either.

Some Republican leaders in Congress are "pushing to make privatizing Social Security a key part of their legislative agenda if they win a majority in Congress this fall," Obama said.

Why would this be such a bad thing?

But then, I blame them all, regardless of party.

Those failing to understand this are not paying attention.

A potential Republican presidential nominee is stupid... conservatives are racists... Republicans are trying to kill welfare...

It's Democrats' Greatest Hits, new/old from the DNC!

The left has been accusing anyone remotely conservative of wanting to destroy Social Security and put grandma and grandpa out in the streets for about 50+ years now.

Its basically SOP

1. Accuse conservatives of only caring about the rich
2. Accuse them of being racist
3. Accuse them of trying to destroy social security because they hate old folks
4. Accuse conservatives of hating women and wanting to take away their rights
5. Accuse conservatives of hating every sort of degenerative, perverse lifestyle and I’m not talking about homosexuals, as on a personal level, I have no issue with homosexual unions between consenting adults but I do have a problem with the sexualization of children and all these perverted leftwing interest groups like NAMBLA and so on.
6. Make #5 somehow sound like a bad thing

They’ve been using the same playbook for decades.

Conservatives hate the poor, are racist and want to see dead seniors in the streets(forgetting that progressive ideology strongly supports eugenics and ultimately does result in the heavily-mocked “death panels” where denial of care is based on what value some group of random individuals judge your life to be worth.
