This fall, voters in Kentuckys Third Congressional District have a prime opportunity to take back a Republican seat in the House. After a decade of Republican congressional representation in Louisville, Democrat John Yarmuth narrowly won this district in 2006 with 51% of the vote. Increasingly out-of-touch with his constituents, Yarmuth has become a reliable vote for his leadership and now faces a top-flight Republican challenger in Todd Lally.
Kentuckys most urban area, the Third District encompasses all of Louisville. Although this district has a slightly Democratic-leaning reputation, Republicans have had success here: Former Republican Congresswoman Anne Northup represented this district from 1997 until her narrow 49% defeat in the 2006 elections and it was here in Jefferson County that now-Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was first elected to judge-executive.
While this demographically diverse region maintains a tangible strain of fiscal conservatism, John Yarmuth steadfastly supports the Pelosi-Obama agenda. In this decidedly Republican-friendly year, Yarmuths radically liberal voting record wont behoove him at the ballot box. He votes with Nancy Pelosi 99% of the time--more than almost any other Democrat in Congress. Similarly alarming is Yarmuths double-talk on fiscal issues. After telling his constituents that he hated the bill, he voted for the bank bailout that was later signed into law. Furthermore, he continued to spend his constituents money by voting for the failed trillion-dollar stimulus and lining up behind Pelosi to raise the debt limit to an astronomical $14.3 trillion.
Third District voters have a strong candidate to battle Yarmuth this fall. Local Air National Guard hero Todd Lally presents a conservative option for the voters that are tired of Yarmuths blind allegiance to Democrat leadership. Todd is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Kentucky Air National Guard who has served the people of Kentucky for 22 years as a military pilot. During his time in uniform, Todd served in both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. This Louisville native has become a radio personality as a live commentator on the Cox Radio station, Voice of Thunder over Louisville. Todd is a committed supporter of conservative values and fiscal responsibility. He understands that the Constitution is the base of our system of governance and pledges to work to uphold it. He is dedicated to providing the citizens of Kentuckys Third District the kind of principled, responsible leadership they deserve.
This November, voters in Louisville have a clear choice: continue supporting the job-killing economic policies of the Obama-Pelosi-Yarmuth team or elect a fiscally responsible Republican who will create jobs in Kentuckys Third District. I hope youll continue to watch this race and learn more about Todd on his website or be following him on Twitter or viewing his campaign profile on Facebook.
Well...I live here. I THINK, I heard one Lally radio ad during the primary. I THINK I voted for him... but, honestly, his name recognition with me is SO LOW, I couldn’t tell you for for sure... and, I pay attention much more than most.
But, hey! He’s stilll got 12 weeks to get his message out. Hope he’s got a LOT of money... cause, Yarmuth has his ugly face EVERYWHERE.
Lally?? Hmnnn.... I gotta get me one them signs! :-)
Good Post. Something is going on in the Louisville race. Yarmuth is now saying he doesn’t agree with Nancy, and Obama, after being in bed with them for the last two years.
I know Todd Lally. After he won the primary, he didn’thave much money (He actually worked for a living as a pilot for UPS). Since then his finances are looking better and he will have money for ads when the time comes. He also has TEA Party support. How about volunteering to make phone calls for him to get his name recognition up? That’s what the grassroots does.
Funny.. I was already thinking about doing just that. I've worked on several campaigns over the years... including Ron Paul's failed Presidential bid in the 80's.
Yarmuth is emminently beatable.... But, it's going to take effort... from a LOT of people, like me.
Northrup was a HORRIBLE candidate.. and, she still got 49% against Yarmuth.
100% of her ads were negative.. and, she dissed W... two weeks after accepting his support in a fund raiser. That action, cost her my vote.. and, probably a few others.
I feel no shame about that. I like Ann, personally... but, she did not deserve to win.
I’m still learning about Lally. But, so far.... I like everything I see.
Nancy Pelosi thanks you for your previous vote.
She's welcome.... She won a 39 vote majority.. it hardly mattered. And, we'll have a MUCH better candidate in my district this year.
I can live with it.
Did you go third party or leave it blank?
Ping
The dream scenario for Kentucky is a clean sleep of the congressional delegation. That requires 2 incumbent rats to be exterminated.
I think that Andy Barr in Lexington has a fairly good chance of winning. I’m less confident of Lally, if only because he doesn’t seem to be on anybody’s radar.
Jarmouth is pond scum. Finally reading on here about someone I can actually vote against.
It's been awhile now... But, I think I voted for a Constitutional Party candidate...
I'm generally very opposed to voting for Third Parties... It's a waste, generally... But, I was just so mad at Northrup, I couldn't bring myself to vote for her.
New poll out today has Yarmuth up by 23 points...
http://politics.mycn2.com/2010/08/12/cn2-poll-shows-john-yarmuth-with-a-23-point-lead-in-3rd-congressional-district/
If you check the stats in the poll, they hit "Strong Democrats" at a 2-1 margin over "Strong Republicans".... so, I'm quite sure the results are skewed. But, I'd be surprised if Yarmuth wouldn't poll at double digits lead right now... just on name recognition.
People round here are thinking about that race... yet.
...for those interested. :D
Lally is a good man, and will be voting for him. I think Yarmuth is out. Not a soul here is saying they will vote for him. Even the dems here don’t like Yarmuth.
Her name is Anne Northup, not Ann Northrup. She held the seat for a decade (”horrible candidate”?) despite having everything including the kitchen sink thrown at her each and every race, and the in the election preceding the one with Yarmuth she got over 60% of the vote. All of Northup’s ads were not negative. Although, her heart was not really in the last half of that race...a number of bad personal issues, the most traumatic of which was the sudden and unexpected death of her son.
In any event, there is no excuse for having helped an ultra liberal like Yarmuth get into power. He’s probably even more liberal than Mike Ward was.
Right - even Rush was talking about him the other day. I wish he would have mentioned Lally but anyway...it is pretty clear the internal polling is looking shaky for Yarmuth.
Boehner was in Louisville to attend an event for Lally the other week. He must at least be on the outskirts of someone’s radar if he would take the time to make the trip.
Sorry to misspell Anne Northup’s name... I always seem to have had a problem with that.
But, I stand by the rest of my comments.
She deserted George Bush on the Iraq war... only weeks after W was here, raising money for her. I saw them, on the stage together... shaking hands, smiling... all’s good when money is coming her way. Literally weeks later, she’s throwing W under the bus just at a time when he needed her support. Sorry... but, I never forgave her for that. May have been a calculated decision on her part.. Might even have been “politically expedient”... but, it was disloyal.
I know about Anne’s personal tradgedy in 2006. It was very sad. That doesn’t change the fact that her campaign was poorly run. Virtually ALL of her ads were negative, and featured sound clips of Yarmuth saying silly things. Yarmuth was NOT well known... before Anne kept putting his name out there. That was, an error... IMHO.
Anne’s an honorable person.. a nice lady. I’ve met her twice. She’s doing great work on the Consumer Protection Commission (or, whatever it’s called)... but, in 2006, she ran a poor campaign. In 2008, she was a poor candidate. Already defeated, TWICE, in the previous two years... We needed someone with more appeal.
We still have Hal Rogers in our district. He is only a conservative when is comes to gay marriage and the Ten Commandments. There is no one more RINO than Rogers, even McConnell; in fact, he has almost as much s—t named for him as does Robert Byrd in W. Virginia. He even had the nerve to take Daniel Boone’s name off of the Parkway and replace it with his own. Locals who slurped at the trough insisted it wasn’t Rogers’ idea. I intend to see that Rogers is part of the Tea Party agenda next election cycle.
