The White House asked St. Edwards University if it was interested in hosting President Barack Obama for his speech in Austin on Monday, but the university declined, a spokeswoman for the school said today.
St. Edwards University is honored to have been considered a potential venue for President Obamas recent visit to Austin, said a statement issued by spokeswoman Mischelle Diaz. Regretfully, it was not a good time for us to consider this. With the short notice provided - only 3 to 4 days - a visit of this importance and magnitude would have been difficult for a campus of our size. A presidential visit requires and deserves more resources than we were able to provide at the time.
Diaz acknowledged that parallels have been drawn between the decision by St. Edwards and the presidents commencement speech last year at another Roman Catholic institution, the University of Notre Dame.
Some Catholics were upset that Obama, who supports abortion rights, was invited to speak and awarded an honorary degree. Notre Dame and St. Edwards were established by the same Holy Cross priest.
But Diaz said the Austin schools reasons were logistical.
We are hard at work preparing for a new school year and it is not a good time for us to divert resources away from the needs of incoming students, the statement said. Staff members are preparing residence halls, completing maintenance projects and conducting orientation sessions.
In addition, as part of our thoughtful consideration, we had to acknowledge that the vast majority of our student body, and many faculty members, would not be present to participate in a presidential visit.
A White House spokesman declined to comment.
No surprise that those limp-wristed Tea-sips jumped on board to have Stroker there.
That school is a libtard indoctrination center. I’m proud and happy that neither one of my kids wanted to go to school, there.
Good for them. It’s too bad they wouldn’t say they were declining because it was the right thing to do, though.
Can you blame them at St Ed’s? -— Remember this gem?

...and he just isn’t that important to the rest of us...
A very well reasoned declination, in my opinion. It’s nice to be able to offer logical and reasonable excuses in declining the overtures of a president who is, in every way and on every day, turning out to be the most unsatisfactory chief executive in modern history.
Only logistical. . .too bad. Some ‘moral backbone’/moral reasoning, could have been appreciated. If only. . .
Oh I am sure they were declining for the right reasons. Mainly continued monetary support by their alumni who actually care about the right to life for the unborn.
Good point. Maybe he'd like to co-locate a mosque on their grounds while he's at it.
SHOT down! Good for them.
SHOT down! Good for them.
Ahhh yes, the Obama ‘finger’. . .his favorite message, it seems when it comes to Catholics - and Jews, for that matter - and Christians in general, of course; and then are just the ‘white folks’. . .
Let us nope the administration took this with grace.
They didn’t want to hide their crosses and other symbols of Christianity to please The Won?
Obama covering for Vaughn Walker’s attack on Pope Benedict XVI.
Huh? I thought they declined?
Repulsive.
