WASHINGTON--Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha returned from Spain on Sunday, a vacation at a lavish hotel on the Mediterranean coast that triggered her first controversy since becoming first lady. I'm told she made the trip because she promised one of her closest friends, a longtime Chicago pal who just lost her father, she would spend time with her.

So why did Mrs. Obama go to Spain at this time? She's not tone-deaf politically. What was behind the "mother-daughter" vacation?
A White House source told me that Blanchard's father passed away and Mrs. Obama was not able to make the funeral at the beginning of July. Blanchard had promised her daughter she would take her to Spain for her birthday. She asked Mrs. Obama and Sasha to come with. (Malia is at overnight camp.)
"She felt it was important as a dear friend to do this," I was told.

I don’t know, maybe one of 0bama’s lap dogs in the media thought it up and fed it to the WH to spin. Possibly even this Lynn Sweet (writer of this article for the Chicago Sun Times), who went to Africa with him in 2006 according to her biography.

While her friends arrived in Spain on their own, Michelle Obama flew in on a type of aircraft also used by Vice President Joseph Biden. It costs the government $11,555 an hour to operate the plane, according to the Air Force. Assuming a nearly eight-hour flight to nearby Málaga, the total round-trip cost of the flight is about $178,000.
The Obama family will reimburse the government an amount equal to two first-class tickets — for mother and daughter Sasha, Air Force officials said. A round-trip first-class flight to Málaga costs about $7,400 apiece, without discounts or restrictions.

However, Barack Obama acknowledged Jackson Jr was in the audience when Obama spoke at a Ford factory on August 5th ( transcript of that speech).
Perhaps Jackson Jr rents (or is given) a home in Marbella for the summer and zips in and out. El Mundo was aware of his presence there sometime this summer.
I know—I was really surprised to see that was her too!

The first reports I saw were the last week in July and incorrect. Spanish and other media said both Barack and Michelle were going to Marbella. Two or three days later, the WH denied those reports and said Michelle was going alone.
Interestingly enough, the first reports were about two weeks after Salman Bin Abdelaziz arrived in Marbella (the Arab prince with whom El Mundo reported Michelle would meet).

Then, the Olive Press, Spain, reported on July 27th:
America’s first lady Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha, 9, are coming for a five-day visit to Marbella next week . . .While the White House insists the president will not be joining his family, hotel sources claimed that a cake has been ordered for the big night.
Another Olive Press source claimed that the president would fly into the US air force base in Moron de la Frontera, where he would then be flown by helicopter to the coast.
The U.S. press was sceptical of the visit until it was confirmed by the White House on Monday night (July 26th). When we contacted a columnist from The Washington Post she first told us, “There is a huge political downside to a White House family vacationing overseas.”
But afterwards, she said, “Looks like you guys were right.
