WASHINGTON--Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha returned from Spain on Sunday, a vacation at a lavish hotel on the Mediterranean coast that triggered her first controversy since becoming first lady. I'm told she made the trip because she promised one of her closest friends, a longtime Chicago pal who just lost her father, she would spend time with her.

So why did Mrs. Obama go to Spain at this time? She's not tone-deaf politically. What was behind the "mother-daughter" vacation?

A White House source told me that Blanchard's father passed away and Mrs. Obama was not able to make the funeral at the beginning of July. Blanchard had promised her daughter she would take her to Spain for her birthday. She asked Mrs. Obama and Sasha to come with. (Malia is at overnight camp.)

"She felt it was important as a dear friend to do this," I was told.

The paper also reports Jesse Jackson Jr is staying at a private house in Marbella and she “could” meet with him. It doesn’t say who owns the home Jackson is hanging out in.

Martin Nesbitt, a successful businessman and longtime friend and confidante, who was the finance chairman of Obama’s first, unsuccessful run for Congress.

The president of a Chicago parking management company and vice president of the Pritzker Realty Group, Nesbitt and his wife mix with the same Hyde Park crowd as the Obamas. Nesbitt was with Obama when he made his historic speech to the 2004 Democratic convention, and he was with him in Philadelphia last March when he delivered his remarks about race.

His wife, Anita Blanchard, an obstetrician, delivered both of Obama’s children.

Wahid Hamid a wealthy Pakistani friend of Obama when he was a freshmam. Hamid and Obama traveled to Karachi, Pakistan after graduation from Occidental and stayed with the family of Mohammed Hasan Chandoo. Hamid is now a vice president at Pepsico in New York City.
