It's a tourist destination usually associated with beer-swilling Brits, but U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama is set to holiday with daughter Sasha on Spain's Costa del Sol.
Mother and daughter are due to travel to the resort of Marbella in southern Spain next week for a private trip with long-time family friends, the White House announced today.
But Barack Obama, who turns 49 on 4 August, will celebrate his birthday home alone while elder daughter Malia, 12, attends summer camp back in the States. The Obamas tour Ghana in 2009
Despite the unusual choice of holiday destination, Mrs Obama, who will be on the Costa del Sol between 4 and 8 August with nine-year-old Sasha, has reserved 30 rooms at a five-star hotel.

With a reputation as Spain's most exclusive hotel, room prices start at 250 euros (£210) for a standard double and rise up to 5,000 euros (£4,175) for a private villa within the gardens.The tourist spot has gained a reputation for being something of a party town
Mrs Obama and Sasha will be accompanied by an entourage of secret service personnel who will follow their every move.
The cost of housing the First Lady and her entourage could raise questions back in the U.S. over the use of taxpayers's money.
Mrs Obama will pay an official visit to Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia. Spanish newspapers today reported that the royal family had invited her to join them at their summer palace on Majorca in the Mediterranean.
The Obamas will spend four nights at Spain's most exclusive hotel, the Villa Padierna on the Costa del Sol near Marbella
However Mrs Obama will miss her husband's 49th birthday on August 4.

No doubt we OWE Michelle this vacation and she is collecting what she deserves for being born in the USA. I wonder if she’s proud now or will it take more vacations to do that?
BTW, why is the US taxpayer paying for this? We didn’t elect her. And, 30 rooms?? How many rooms does the dog have? I’m sick of this.

This is altogether sickening on so many levels: phony marriage, phony family, phony president, etc. But besides that, WHO is paying for 30 5-star rooms, plus food for all the occupants, plus plus plus? It makes me ill. No one is demanding accountability??!! Maybe the visit with El Rey and La Reina justify taxpayer money being spent? I hate this!
Then, you have all the whoop-de-do over fugly Chelsea Clinton’s multi-million $$$ wedding this weekend.
All this livin’ large partying taking place while America stands in the unemployment line, visits the food bank for free food, worries about the future and struggles to survive. And these are supposedly their champions, the ones who would make it all better.
