Wyclef Jean running for Haitian presidency (LOL)
NY Post ^ | 07/28/2010 | Staff

Wyclef Jean will formally announce his bid for the presidency of earthquake-shattered Haiti within two weeks, sources tell us. The former Fugees star, 37, who's an ambassador under the current Haitian government, is ready to put his music career on hold to run for his homeland's top job. But the move will put him in conflict with former Fugees bandmate Pras (Prakazrel Samuel Michel), a Brooklyn native who campaigned for more relief after the deadly January earthquake, who's backing another candidate. Wyclef's reps confirmed he's submitted paperwork to run in the Nov. 28 election...

It's a headline that could have been ripped from The Onion. It's as if someone asked the question, "What's the worst thing that could happen to Haiti right now, short of another earthquake, a volcano, or a tidal wave" - and Wyclef John, is the answer.

For those that don't know, and I suspect that's virtually everyone, Wyclef is fairly famous pop artist from the 1990's, who is from Haiti and had a charity for Haiti for years that was associated with all kinds of corruption and accounting fraud. IOW, he'll fit in beautifully as Haiti's president.

Is he running as a “tea party” candidate?

I suspect his candidacy does have leafy-plant affiliation, but it's not part of the tea plant variety.

Well, he couldn’t be any worse than their last few presidents.

Why the hell not? I don't see a lot of other stellar characters lining up to save this hell hole of a country. Maybe he has enough money already that he isn't doing it to rape the coffers and get rich. Maybe he actually cares about his people.

Getting more information on the corruption of his earlier charity would be helpful. A lot of celebrities lend their names to things like that without knowing or even caring about the day to day accounting activities. It doesn't mean I'm giving him a pass, just saying that he may not have been elbows deep in the corruption on a personal level.

I hear what you are saying, but this wasn't (or isn't) "old news". Much of the problems and surrounding questions about his charity, Yele Haiti Foundation, came to light very recently, in the immediate aftermath of Haiti's latest tragedy. More can be found here....

Wyclef Jean Charity's Funny Money

Unlike some other problems with celebrity charities - like some of the problems we've seen in the Darfur and Katrina charities - there are allegations, some very substantiated allegations, of Wyclef personally enriching himself with the proceeds from his charity.

I don't see anything funny. I bet he'll make a better president than 0b0z0.

Actually, the loudest LOLs are leveled against us by the rest of the world for electing a POS TUS.

Why not? Unlike some other presidents Wyclef Jean can prove that he meets the appropriate citizenship requirements and he has significant work experience in the private sector. Heck, you could even argue that his heart is in the right place and even with some less-than-ideally executed outside ventures, he seems to know what he’s doing.

Precisely the ‘more’ information I was looking for. Thank you. This guy seems dirty to the core. How sad for Hiati that they do not have anyone to champion the cause of ‘the people’. This should be a tropical paradise awash in money, and yet...

He effectively RUINED the USA for HAITI all-star version of WE ARE THE WORLD by screaming his head off when it came to his turn (As if he had to go to the bathroom ).
