France declares war against al-Qaida

PARIS (AP) - France has declared war on al-Qaida, and matched its fighting words with a first attack on a base camp of the terror network's North African branch, after the terror network killed a French aid worker it took hostage in April.

The declaration and attack marked a shift in strategy for France, usually discrete about its behind-the-scenes battle against terrorism.

"We are at war with al-Qaida," Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Tuesday, a day after President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the death of 78-year-old hostage Michel Germaneau.

The humanitarian worker had been abducted April 20 or 22 in Niger by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, and was later taken to Mali, officials said.

The killers will "not go unpunished," Sarkozy said in unusually strong language, given France's habit of employing quiet cooperation with its regional allies—Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Algeria—in which the al-Qaida franchise was spawned amid an Islamist insurgency.

Why didn't Bush beef up the border patrol and back installing more walls and fencing along the border.

He did. However, until the Right is honest about Regan's role in massively increasing illegal immigration and creating the policies that have killed so many American jobs in favor of overseas workers, then I have no respect for any whining so-called real conservatives do on the issue.

At least they didn’t declare war on “terror”, but an organization. I always hated how this war was labeled.

Welsome to the party, France!

Durandal delivered at treetop level by a quartet of Mirage 2000's can ruin a jihadi camper's day.

Tres formidable!

As long as they keep chewing on that tentacle called "Al-Q'aeda", they'll eventually chew all the way up to the head, which is Islam itself and its bloodyminded muftis who are hiding behind their pulpits while bidding others to collect ricin, make bombs, slit throats, and snipe people to death.

We'll locate all those guys and deal with them eventually -- all in one swell foop, would be my prediction.

You don't want to try to kill 1.2 billion people. Just the 20,000 or so who are egging them on and causing all the hate and discontent.

Warden Message: Mauritania Potential AQIM Activity, Caution Urged
CONSULAR AFFAIRS BULLETINS
Sub-Saharan Africa - Mauritania
23 Jul 2010”

SNIPPET: “U.S. Embassy Nouakchott released the following Warden Message on July 23, 2010:

The U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott is issuing this Warden Message to call U.S. citizens’ attention to recent events in the north of Mali, and to urge U.S. citizens to exercise heightened awareness and take additional security measures in light of these events.

According to press reporting, on July 22, Mauritanian security forces conducted a raid against an Al-Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) camp in northern Mali. France has confirmed that it provided some technical assistance. As a result of perceived Western involvement in the raid, it is possible that AQIM will attempt retaliatory attacks against Western targets of opportunity. Accordingly, U.S. citizens should remain vigilant and attempt to maintain as low a profile as possible. Citizens should also review the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Warnings for Mali, Mauritania, and Niger.

Citizens should also review recent Warden Messages issued by the U.S. Embassies in Bamako, Nouakchott, and Ouagadougou.”

I don't hate GWB. Most of the derision the press heaped upon him was totally undeserved and the hate that he endured from the Left was truly appalling.

It's ironic because GWB was more of a friend to the Left than they will ever admit. Rarely did GWB wield his Veto pen to block the Democrat/Progressive agenda, which we are suffering now.

Had he shown the courage of Reagan on more occasions, defended his conservative principles and stood up to the critics that made him a laughingstock to the majority of the country thereby causing too many Republican Congressional seats to be lost, leaving us defenseless against these Leftist fascists in power, I'd be a lot less critical of him.

And what about GWB telling America that he had to "abandon free market principles in order to save it". Nikita Khrushchev probably had a chuckle at that one from hell.

And another thing, Islam is not a religion of peace by any stretch of the imagination as Bush asserted too often. It is by far the most violent religion on Earth and it threatens the free world. Until conservatives admit that that statement is pure idiotic foolishness, this country is destined to fall.

You are aware that French Forces have been fighting in Afghanistan since 2001?

Lies. Complete lies. You hide behind them so as to avoid the truthful critical point I've made, which is that Ronald Reagan's policies opened the door to massive illegal immigration and the hemorrhaging of American jobs overseas. The dishonesty of the Right is equal to the dishonesty of the Left, in my opinion. They just lie about different things.

ahhh yeah but it was mostly NATO forces, which is required under the NATO treaty. This Declaration is France getting involved as a Nation not as a NATO obligation and as would seem not just in Afghanistan.

I just don't see how anyone can say that it was RR's fault that we are being overwhelmed by illegals from all over the world particularly from Central and South America. I don't seem to recall Reagan ever giving Mexicans amnesty.

Do you think that sending Cubans who have risked their lives paddling to Miami to escape a communist regime is equivalent to people flooding a border crossing without so much as a word being spoken to them?

What!!!! You sure don't know you recent history. President Ronald Reagan supported what was known as the Simpson-Mazzoli bill. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (its official title) was passed by Congress on November November 6, 1986, and President Reagan signed it into law. The chief provision of this Act was to grant the first, and so far only, genuine amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants, the overwhelming majority of whom were Mexicans.

People on the Right tend to bitch and moan about President George W. Bush simply because he supported legislation THAT NEVER PASSED. President Reagan, on the other hand, did sign an amnesty bill. It was the reason illegal immigration exploded in the 1990's into the early 2000's. The 1986 Act set the precedent upon which present day supporters of another amnesty take their stand.

Well, Obama's cap-n-tax bill didn't pass. Does that mean we can't bitch and moan about Obama supporting cap-n-tax?

Your question is silly. If cap-n-trade (or whatever it's called) eventually passes, it will be a first. It will set precedent on that particular set of issues. The 1986 immigration act signed by President Reagan was such a precedent-setting law. My point, in case you really are that obtuse, is to contrast the hatred of GWB among some elements of the right (as represented on FR) due to his support of legislation that never passed, to their simultaneous willfully ignoring the fact that President Reagan actually supported and signed a genuine amnesty bill.

If you hate the one for merely supporting a bill that never passed, then you must hate the other more for actually signing an amnesty bill into law. Either that, or be revealed as a hypocrite.

GWB tried to shove amnesty down our throats. Republicans opposed it by 4 to 1. Even a majority of Democrats were against amnesty. His misguided obsession created deep divisions in the GOP ranks.

Do you remember how angry people were in June 2007? His failure to get amnesty passed *does not* negate the fact that he did his damnedest to foist it upon us.

Your point is that, since GWB failed to get amnesty passed, we should all just forget that he even tried to shove that monstrosity upon us. That is stupid.

Using your logic, if Obama had failed to pass his Porkulus bill (*not* a precedent-setting bill by the way, as other presidents have passed stimulus bills), we should have then just simply overlooked the fact that he tried his best to rob the taxpayers of $900 billion for his union cronies. Talk about obtuse!
