Here is a man whose every word and deed is easily explicable once you know the single essential thing about him: He is a member of a fascist splinter group that believes it is the salvation of the Catholic Church.
This schismatic crackpot sect is headed by Mel Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, a nutty autodidact with a sideline in Holocaust denial.
Like many ultra-conservative Catholics, the Gibsons, père et fils, have never forgiven the Vatican for lifting the charge of deicide against the Jews in 1964.
Less well-remembered, perhaps, is the interview in which he announced that his wife of many years and the mother of his children would not, alas, be able to join him in paradise.
It was not a matter of her moral character. It was simply that she had not seen fit to join the one true church.
Her condemnation, then, was "a pronouncement from the chair."
Gibson has now traded in this long-suffering ladyhopelessly rupturing his sacred marriage vowsfor another, younger one, who, to phrase it delicately, was almost certainly not picked for her salient Catholic virtues.
In doing this, he must have had a consciousness, however dim, of having endangered his immortal soul.

Hitchen’s mouth should be examined for new molecules that can be used in technology development. It can withstand the spewing of so much acid and bile without burning out, it would be incredibly valuable in, say, the garbage and waste disposal industries.
The smoking, burnt-out crust of the hole that used to contain his soul is another matter, however. Perhaps it should be just buried in a landfill with a warning gate around it.
Yes, I said as much further on up the thread. : )
Vietnam was Australia’s longest war, and their draft was in full force during the Vietnam war, the draft of neither nation has anything to do with Mel Gibson, he was too young.
Hutton Gibson said that one reason he moved was an effort to keep his OLDEST son from being drafted, he did not think that the Australia draft would take that son.
Vietnam was fought primarily by volunteers, it was not a draftee military like WWII, or WWI.
Are you calling Mel's dad irrational?
No.
Because there's definitely no rational refutation to that either. : )
That doesn't make sense.
Humor...or my attempt at such, anyway. It’s late so I’ll just sing “hello, I must be going”. It was fun freeping with you and have a good night!
Nite, MissCalico. Don’t let the pillow get away. ;-)
I have been wondering since Mel's earlier arrest in Malibu if he had been placed on anti-depressive or anti-psychotic drugs to deal with the cause of his drinking and other disorders. Is it a possibility His recent bizarre, yet uncharacteristic, behavior could be the result of a reaction to these medications. He was married to the same lady for a very long time, they both are the same mother and father of a large number of decent children. He was known as a loyal family man, rare in hedonist Hollywood.
I am obviously no "shrink", just an amateur wondering.
No one knew how long the war or the draft would last and his sons were all close in age, so, of course he was reasonably concerned that ALL of his sons might be drafted in rapid succession. As far as the Australian draft is concerned, idk, but that's another interesting question. Did they ever become Australian citizens? The old man might have been crazy but "like a fox" shrewd. He also collected some employment disability monies from his job at the railroad, if I recall.
Given his medical condition, Christopher needs to spend more time reading the Bible than reading about Mel Gibson
I have no idea if this man did anything or not to this young woman; however, when she hires Gloria Alread to defend; money will probably be and may be the intended and most important goal.
This a weird thing that you are on, trying to create the lie that a twelve year old kid was a draft dodger, but as far as facts go, in 1968 nobody thought that the United States would still be fighting the Vietnam War in 1974 or 1975, and of course we weren’t. Your commitment to this myth creating is ugly, did you get it from Debbie Schlussel?
You did not have to be a citizen to be drafted in Australia, only a permanent resident.
This jerk can’t drop dead fast enough.
Hitchens is a bloated, hateful windbag. One wonders if all that hatred for Christians was the catalyst for his cancer.
He has a good mind, though, which was a terrible thing to waste, and it’s definitely wasted.
I won’t wish him ill, but I wish he’d STFU and focus on his chemotherapy.
All atheists are brilliant, smart, intellectual, intelligent and really really bright.
Catholics, Christians or “religioinists” are bigoted, closed-minded, hateful, knuckle-dragging dolts.
And, that’s the truth.
/sarcasm/
“Right-wing Catholic Ideology” is something I have never been able to understand. I don’t see what’s conservative about claiming to be the only church. “Monopolistic-wing Catholic Idealogy” would be more accurate.
There are two kinds of churches — strong and pacifist.
Wherever the Catholic church or ANY strong church holds a monopoly, corruption seeps in. Pacifist religions can fight back a lot of corruption even with a monopoly, but they suffer from weakness.
Hitchens needs help.
Whatever the case, I hope Mel gets his head on straight. His reputation is shot. Forget the good fruit born by Braveheart, the Patriot, The Passion, and Apocolypto [which exposed the rubbish of how wonderful Aztecs were]. It only takes one fly of foolishness to ruin the ointmennt. In Mr. Gibson’s case, it’s a lot more than one, and the leftists are dancing on the grave of his rep.
I pray he doesn’t do anything even more extreme than he already has done. He probably needs a sebatical. He needs to get away from the news. He needs to re-read Gal. 6:12 every morning and night for a solid month: Do good things unto all people — ALL people [especially unto the Brotherhood of Faith]. More importantly, be good to all people. God loves ALL people.
And for the record — I was also a Catholic as a kid. And some creep tried to molest me. One of that creep’s friends is in prison now for child molestation [a priest], and I’m not surprised. As an adult, I went back to that church for the sake of my grandmother, and a priest hit on my girlfriend.
I dropped that stinking church for good reason. American educated priests are just as twisted as Obama if not worse.
Probably already is.
Hitchens has a point - to a certain degree.
If anyone wants to understand Mel’s brand of “catholocism” - try googling Hutton Gibson (lots of material - have fun)
But also - spend some time with the SSPX online.
Now the Gibsons are not SSPX - but the outlook and tone is very similar.
Then google the sedevanticists. These are the “empty seaters”.
You think southern baptists dislike the pope? HA! You’ve never seen pope hatred like this!
These people have webpages and forums.
Once you spend time in their world - now consider this is the atmosphere Mel was raised in.
So I agree that Mel isn’t “just” suffering from bipolar - or alcoholism.
The answer is “all the above”
Mix a dose of mental illness, alcohol, Hollywood celebrity, plus an ubringing at the hand of Hutton Gibson?
That’s quite an explosive mix.
Hitchens can’t help himself though.
He tries to equate the Gibson brand of “catholicism” with all of catholicism. It’s what a good atheist does.
