Obamas swim, play and stroll on summer break (a weekend getaway in Maine)

BAR HARBOR, Maine (AFP) – US President Barack Obama and his family packed a full day of tennis, swimming and hiking into a weekend getaway in the northeastern state of Maine on Saturday.

The Obamas began the day with rounds of tennis and some splashing in the pool, followed by lunch by the waterfront at an island hotel, according to reporters traveling with the president.

Obama, his wife Michelle and their daughters Malia and Sasha then toured a lighthouse on the southern tip of Mount Desert Island, taking along their rambunctious dog Bo.

The family mingled with visitors and admired the view from the top of the lighthouse before heading on a nearly hour-long hike along the Ship Harbor Hiking Trail.

"Good family time," said the First Lady's press secretary Katie McCormick-Lelyveld, who went along on the hike.

It was "about an hour walk with stops at the water to skip rocks and play with the dog. A few other families were hiking, many with their dogs, and the family stopped to say hi along the way," she said.

"Beautiful views and cool air -- and pretty rocky at times! A nice hike," she added.

After the First Family arrived on Friday, they promptly took off on a bike ride and later stopped for ice cream.

Muslims consider dogs to be unclean animals.

This is probably why it does not fly on AF1

I’m sure their visit impacted traffic, but I’ve traveled the road from Ellsworth to bar harbor many a time... and during the summer season it’s always a pain. Even Bangor rd gets backed up, and most of the locals always bitch about the summer people. If they vote in a republican for Pres next time, I’ll believe they were very annoyed with the O’s visit.

We used to stay up in Corea on the gouldsboro peninsula... much quieter than touristy Mount Desert. I was frankly surprised the big O wasn’t staying up in Winter Harbor with some of his money’d friends.

You’re thinking about Bar Harbor as the playground for the rich more than 80 years ago. Think pre airconditioning, as a need to head up north for the hot humid summer months. Now it’s an icon to the past, full of tourists ogling where the rich used to play. Don’t get me wrong, the island and parks are some of the most beautiful places on earth...but it’s really more naturalists that are drawn to the area.

I spent many a week in BH on a Catholic School teacher salary with my wife. A week in BH cost as much as two nights on the Cape. The billionaires are long gone. Those who are left are far outnumbered by real folks. Acadia Nat’l Park is the busiest in America and the area is emminently affordable for food and lodging. Now that I’m retired I look forward to returning to BH, but I’ll wait until Obama leaves.

Meanwhile, in middle America, my wife and I wondered how to pay our bills and hel family members who can not find work.

Not to mention that the dog does not live in the same residence as the folks. What's that all about?

How positively weird this faux family really is. It's as if they originated from a parallel planet. Nothing is as it appears where they're concerned.

But we already knew that about the socialist with the big ears.

Those are very strange photos.

It’s as if Obama is so dumb that he doesn’t understand to put his hand through the loop on the leash.

Also, he’s not looking at the dog or showing any interest in the dog - he’s basically just posing for the camera, like an actor acting like he’s taking a dog for a walk, but doing a lousy acting job.

One wonders if this fool is not just alien to America, but to normal human beings.

Ah, Corea....it’s been awhile since I’ve been there. Like you said, it’s a quiet town, and a beautiful area this time of the year.

It’s true what you say about the traffic jams during the summer season, but they’re worse this year because of road construction. The Bangor Road.....1A between Ellsworth and Bangor is being widened, and it’s a one year + construction project; many miles have been ripped up. My sister refuses to go anywhere near it because twice she received a cracked windshield from pebbles in the road.

Route 3 right before you drive onto MDI is a problem area, too....a bus terminal is being built, and the road is torn up there as well. They’re trying to encourage people to leave their cars at this bus depot and take public transportation to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.

What rankled people the most about the Obama visit was the closing of Route 3 just before you drive into Bar Harbor. Three miles of Route 3 were closed for three days because of the Obama visit....Route 3 passes alongside the Bar Harbor Regency Hotel where the Obamas are staying, and traffic was detoured through Acadia National Park. The locals are not happy about the closure.

Very true about the locals bitching about the summer people and the crowds along the Coast! But what’s left of the Maine economy needs those tourist dollars.

If Maine goes Republican in the 2012 presidential election, it will be because (1) of the lousy economy here and (2) because people here, just like people in the other states, and waking up to the disaster that is the Obama presidency.
We have TEA parties here, too, and during last June’s Republican primary, there were seven men and women running for the GOP nomination for Governor, and a TEA party candidate....Paul LePage....did much better than expected and won the primary. He’s now the GOP’s official nominee for governor in the Fall, and he is a conservative. He’s leading in the polls, although part of this is due to the fact that two liberals are running as independents and they are siphoning votes away from the democrat nominee, Libby Mitchell.

Thank-you for posting.

I just heard on the radio that Obama and his wife are having a “date night” right now at a restaurant in Bar Harbor. The restaurant is named “Havana”

Appreciate the real local view. Your local papers are ...difficult to take. See "Havana" had a Sea Scallop special last night.

What's the story behind the owners of this joint? Odd logo for an ice cream parlor:

There are still some billionaires in the area, and some just run-of-the-mill millionaires. But they are all “summer people.”

The oceanfront real estate in Bar Harbor is expensive; an oceanfront summer home in Bar Harbor, Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and neighboring towns will cost $1,000,000 up to $10,000,000 or more.

Martha Stewart has a home on an oceanfront hilltop in nearby Seal Harbor. The 63 acre estate was originally built for Edsel Ford, and it’s worth about $9 million. Former Senator George Mitchell has a pricey home in Seal Harbor, and the head of Fidelity Investments has a showplace here. The late Caspar Weinberger and his wife had a beautiful estate on Somes Sound in Somesville, on the other side of the island. I went to a yard sale at this estate a year ago; the Weinberger’s son had a yard sale to benefit the gardens of Acadia National Park, and he allowed it to be held at his parents $5 million home, located on the only fiord in the lower 48 states.

The New York socialite Mrs. Astor had a home in nearby Northeast Harbor. Nelsom Rockefeller was born in Bar Harbor. In fact, the Rockefellers donated 10,000 acres when Acadia National Park was first established (it was originally called Lafeyette National Park).

As you mentioned, “real folks” far outnumber the super rich in the area. Main Street in Bar Harbor consists of numerous shops and restaurants, and the busy sidewalks are jammed by middle class people from all over America, Canada and beyond. Acadia National Park is like a mini-UN in summer....I’ve seen people from all over the world in the park.

Also, the area suffered a massive, southern California-style wildfire in October, 1947. The fire destroyed about 75 Victorian era mansions....one third of the total....as well as numerous historical hotels and many businesses and public structures. Many local people boarded boats on the town wharf and fled to the sea in order to escape the fire, which was a worldwide news story at the time.

Doesn't only Chavez and Kim Jong Ill get this kind of press treatment.

It's quite disturbing.

Next, the press will be lying about Obama's handicap and how he routinely hits holes-in-one.

The best local paper is “The Ellsworth American”....a weekly newspaper published in Ellsworth, the county seat, about 15 - 20 miles from Bar Harbor.

“The Bar Harbor Times” is the local weekly in that community, and the paper has a bit of a leftward bent.
“Mount Desert Islander” is another local newspaper. The Bangor Daily News is the largest paper in northern Maine....I no longer read it; the editorial pages are decidely liberal.

When I heard Obama was coming to the area, I figured he would visit what I call the “old time” ice cream shop in Bar Harbor, on Main Street. I saw an image here on Free Republic on Friday of Obama standing inside this shop, with it’s vintage fixtures, tiles, etc.; it looks like a 1920’s or earlier old fashioned ice cream store.

The shop with the fist and the spoon....I think this may be a different ice cream shop on a side street....not Main Street. I don’t recall trees that large on Main Street.
I think Obama visited more than one ice cream store!

I’ve never been to any of the ice cream shops in Bar Harbor. I try to avoid the commercial areas of town in the summer, because it’s crowded and very difficult to find a place to park. Whenever I walk by the old fashioned ice cream shop on Main Street, it’s usually in the Spring or Fall, and a bit to chilly for ice cream....more like hot soup weather.

There are a number of liberal business owners in the area....that clenched fist motif looks like a “power to the people” emblem....probably middle-aged hippee owners. LOL!

As for Sea Scallops, they are harvested locally.

In the Spring, and especially in the Fall, many cruise ships visit Bar Harbor, including the Queen Elizabeth II. The passengers and crew are brought to the town pier by a small shuttle boat. Even more cruise ships would visit if it were possible for ships to dock, but in order to do that, Frenchman’s Bay, adjacent to Bar Harbor, would have to be dredged, but the lobstermen and scallop fishermen would never allow it. The Fall visitors come during the Fall foliage period; the leaves reach their peak in early October. The people are called “leaf peepers.”

LOL! I don’t think the Bush family are too happy with Obama these days.

Besides, Kennebunkport is, at least, a 3 hour drive south of Bar Harbor.
