The Republican primary in the 1st Congressional District race for Congressman Bart Stupak's seat is heating up both verbally and financially. Benishek, a surgeon by trade, made more than $142,000 in candidate contributions to his campaign during the past three months. The amount, plus about $285,264 from other individuals, has the U.P. native claiming to have gathered $427,692 throughout his six-month campaign. late race entry Sen. Jason Allen, R-Alanson, who entered in March, has mustered $221,968 in a short period. By contrast, Allen used only $100 of his own money, according to the report. On the Political Action Committee front, Allen grabbed $40,898, but Benishek claimed zero.

I think Benishek has the advantage in this race not because of the money but by virtue of not being Jason Allen. It doesn’t look like money is all that important in Michigan races this time out. (Money can’t be an issue for Michigan republicans)
Here in the 7th district, democrat Mark Schauer has tons of union money and little popular support. It appears that he’s just padding his retirement account by fundraising outside the district before getting tossed out in November.
Stupak helped shoot him farther into the limelight than anything, IMHO... just had this discussion w/a friend, and I said this very thing, I think he has the name recognition, and is a true conservative, I hope he is the winner.
I heard Kiupers is in troble too. He and Allen and Patterson end up making deals with the libs too often.
me too, I’m in Allen’s district and Stupak’s district, and really the district must go to Benishek if we are to be victorious in November. Allen is just a Dem lite.
I got my email update from the Walberg campaign and see he has led the fundraising on the GOP side with some $700 grand so far.
Is Walberg the good guy?
Oh definitely.

If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
Stupak in trouble? Wonderful! He should have come clean about the bribe/job. Oh well.
Uups, I assumed the primary was over. So, asking Mr. Campaign — what’s your take, Impy? Is Benishek rock-ribbed? I bet sunkenciv would like to know too.
Stupak retired the race is wide open.
There are now just 5 Republicans in the primary, only one Democrat in the general.
Jason Allen-State Senator who’s constituency is part of the District he’s running for
Dan Benishek- Crystal Falls surgeon who lept into the spotlight after stupak betrayed the country.
Tom Stillings- Steel man originally from MA, not getting a whole lot of traction.
Don Hooper
Patrick Donlon
Gary McDowell is the new pro-life Dem (rolls eyes)
OK, thank you FRiend.
Jenk is on point.
Allen is regarded as something of a RINO and he is not from the Upper Peninsula where ideally we want our candidate for that district to come from.
The Yooper Benishek who I note started running when Stupak was still in the race is both the conservative choice and the better bet for November.
The other candidates all appear to be also rans.
Thanks Impy and Jenk.
