Are These the Last Days of Barack Obama?
Newser ^ | Friday, July 16, 2010 | Michael Wolff

Eighteen months in, the Obama presidency is in as dreadful shape as one can imagine. He’ll almost certainly lose the House in the fall elections; and now it’s looking like he could lose the theoretically impregnable Democratic majority in the Senate. What’s more, he has, to an astonishing degree, been unable to communicate even the remotest sense of who he is to the nation: a middle-of-the-roader, by any estimation, and yet a majority of the country thinks he’s a “socialist.”

In the summer before his election, Obama had a secret meeting with that dark master of realpolitik, Rupert Murdoch, who had become uncharacteristically smitten with the popular candidate. Murdoch had sought the meeting to impart a piece of advice: Knowing every President since Kennedy, what Murdoch had come to understand about American politics, he said, was how little time there was to get anything accomplished. In effect, said Murdoch to Obama, whatever a president does in his first 18 months in office is his legislative legacy.

SNIP

I suppose he thought he could, with grim determination, rally people behind this thick, opaque, and long-term stuff. He imagined himself to be Roosevelt—not understanding that FDR’s ambition was packaged in the greatest charm.

This president doesn’t make anybody feel good. He’s made America more anxious, weary, and depressed.

Not only is he obviously not having any fun, he rather looks like someone who has chosen to suffer.

We may actually have gotten our soulful liberal legislation, but we’ve lost the world.

: a middle-of-the-roader, by any estimation

OH BARF! If this radical kook is a "middle-of-the-roader", I'd hate to see what a real socialist would do this country. Bush was a "middle-of-the-roader": education bill, immigration, bank bailouts, etc. What has obama done that is bipartisan? Nothing! He has pushed a radical socialist agenda since day one and it's destroying America. This author should have his head checked.

All these Democrat punks are nothing but a reflection of what’s in the “electorate”. It’s not the politicians who are the problem but the people who vote for them.

IMHO

This is some fine gloating about Obama’s failures trying to get his agenda accomplished, and especially having it un-appreciated by the voters who have turned on his Hope and Change in droves. I enjoy doing it myself, it's about time we got to see the Rats get what they deserve.

Yet, the title is misleading. Obama may be finished pushing sweeping partison bills through congress(short some taxes and spending increases in the lame duck session), but this doesnt mean he will lose the 2012 election.

Next year the political deck of cards is shuffled again. A big win by Republicans could mean that voters start expecting something from them again. Obama will use that. Maybe democrats will force a vote on the deficit commissions tax recommendations in the lame duct session so Obama can try to blame the deficits on Republicans opposition. So far Boehner has come up with 1) repeal unspecified parts of Obama-care, 2) cut social security. Not encouraging. Didnt he promote TARP1?

Then we have a possibility of an ugly Republican primary : 1) Romney, 2) Huckabee, 3) Palin, 4) Newt ??? (I am getting ill thinking about it) Maybe this year will be the best year for Republicans. We cant say now. But Obama is not finished yet.

He is not just an 'empty suit' he is a MARXIST in an empty suit surrounded by and financed by other MARXISTS.

Exactly. It is tragic how many don't get it, even "conservatives." There is this phenomenon where people only think in terms of other singular people: "the dumb think in terms of people, the mediocre think in terms of events, and the intelligent think in terms of ideas."

Barack Obama is a front man, a pretty good one in terms of verbal presence, for a really really sinister cabal which wants to keep the populace dependent, and deconstruct the US to a mediocre static state; bread and circuses. It can be called "fascism," "communism," "socialism," but is authoritarianism in any case, and everything the United States was not founded to be.

Not that the energetic and imaginative motivators of our economy do not understand this, which is why the economy plummets, but this is not the majority of voters. The young (college types) simply do not know better, but I blame the old, the AARP etc. who, having lived through the twentieth century, should. (and the Republican Party of course, totally complicit.)

Tragic; right before our very eyes. It could have been all different.

Go back to the archives, my prediction, right after election day was that the narcissist in chief would not finish out his term. He would “voluntarily” leave office due to health reasons. I stand by it. He will be unable to deal with the massive repudiation he receives on November 2. He’s finished. Barring marshal law or something that occurs to cancel out the upcoming elections, he’s done and will be departing very shortly thereafter.

Do journalists ever get on the web and do a little research ?

Just as it is impossible to 'listen' and 'talk' at the same time, it is impossible to 'write', and 'read' at the same time.

Anybody here care if a president is "having any fun" while in office? I know that's my primary concern. But the author is right, Obama does look very care-worn as he flits from golf course to golf course. /s

America for the most part have figured out what a vapid empty suit this guy is and is ready to flush this turd in November.

I wish I shared your optimism. To continue with your analogy, I think that clearing him and his effects out of the Augean stables will be a labor for a Hercules. Or several.

Not too hard a job for individuals empowered by the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.

I will respectfully disagree with you that BO is a Maoist.

Mao esteemed the farmers and the contryside with its agricultural production over the urban proletariat. Mao also believed on “winning the hearts and minds” of the populace as a first choice, always remembering that political power flows form the barrel of a gun, of course, if persuasion failed. Mao’s Marxism was grassroots and evangelical in its dissemination.

BO is a Leninist. His focus is urban, union, centralized and on the external, top down spread of control and propaganda. Most of his economic policies are cribbed from Lenin’s New Economic Policy of 1922. What is fatal for BO is that he has no Red Guard. BO is wholly imitative. His coursework if it ever sees the light of day will reveal that.

I’m not seeing those Hope and Change bumper stickers anymore nor pics of his inagural on co-workers desks like I did 12 months ago.

I am seeing more of them where I live. The owners are angry and petulant though. I think the increase of such signs is psychologial sandbags for the rising waters coming against them.
