McCarthy says gun bill pushes back at NRA

July 14, 2010 By TOM BRUNE tom.brune@newsday.com

WASHINGTON - The strong wind that blows against gun-control advocates in Congress is more apparent than ever these days, but Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) remains defiant and undeterred.

On Wednesday McCarthy introduced another federal bill aimed at curbing the spread of illegal guns - this one requiring people to report lost or stolen handguns to police.

"I am making a statement...."

It appears that you have to subscribe for the rest of the story.

Wrong!

We don’t need legislation.

We have a Constitution. It is clear, unambiguous and has served us well.

What we need is a Congress that keeps it’s hands off things that are none of their business. Legislation is just an opportunity for corruption.

What are the next steps for the NRA?

We are going to keep working to fight for this freedom. It is just words on a piece of paper until someone battles for them. We are one of the last countries in world where citizens have a constitutional right to own a firearm, but they have to fight to protect it. American culture is deeply embedded in the individual right to own a firearm. And the NRA's strength, I've always said, is a reflection of how the American public feels about that freedom. The good news is that the American public overwhelmingly supports this freedom.

Good enough, but this NRA member would add...

- The NRA will NEVER AGAIN withdraw opposition to First Amendment quashing (the 1st and 2nd Amendments are critical to each other) bills such as the "DISCLOSE Act" (in apparent exchange for exclusive favors); and,

- The NRA will not engage in (apparent) courtship and hand-holding with the likes of uber serpent Harry Reid.

- And, the NRA will simply ask its membership when it gets confused as to who might be D.C. villains, what we members believe that the NRA is there to do.

With apologies for taking thread on a bit an oblique tangent...

.

Screw off, Wayne. You jackballs backed the Demon-rat plan for DISCLOSE.

My NRA membership will not be renewed.

Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association

Is the NRA a private family business? This guy has been around the NRA since before he made his stupid "Jack-boot thugs" comment. Now he supports Harry Reid and the possibility of real jack-boot thugs bashing in the doors of our homes.

I would hope that Congress in a bipartisan way will join together and make sure that the words in the Supreme Court decision becomes real for all law abiding citizens by legislative actions.

Makes sense. If the courts can now write state gun laws, why shouldn't Congress too?

When federalism is usurped, that what happens.

Well, if he wants to “test” Harry Reid, he could always ask Harry to sponsor a bill to do this before the November election. (Any bets? /s)

We don’t need more legislation. We simply need people to read the 2A as it was intended to be.

Thomas Jefferson: “The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.”

We already have it: The 2nd Amendment.
What we really need is a definitive Supreme Court ruling.

The biggest gun rights marketing organization in the U.S. has spoken. The heavy lifting needed to make it happen will be provided by other, smaller groups of course.

Congress should not be making any law respecting the enumerated, inalienable rights contained in our Bill of Rights. Period.

By definition, our enumerated rights reside above and beyond the reach of mortal men and statute law. Our inalienable rights are NOT granted by the state, nor should the state have ANY authority over American citizens' free exercise of those rights.

Just what exactly is an "illegal gun"?

How about legislation to make the U.S. a truly capitalistic, pro-conservative, pro-free market country again?-In my lifetime, and forever?

Somewhere I saw a line that would be a GREAT bumper sticker: “Now is the time for all REAL Americans to put our 2nd Amendment FIRST!”
