San Francisco Considers Banning Sale of Pets Except Fish
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 7/8/10 | Carolyn Jones, Chronicle Staff Writer

Sell a guinea pig, go to jail.

That's the law under consideration by San Francisco's Commission of Animal Control and Welfare. If the commission approves the ordinance at its meeting tonight, San Francisco could soon have what is believed to be the country's first ban on the sale of all pets except fish.

That includes dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, lizards and nearly every other critter, or, as the commission calls them, companion animals.

"People buy small animals all the time as an impulse buy, don't know what they're getting into, and the animals end up at the shelter and often are euthanized," said commission Chairwoman Sally Stephens. "That's what we'd like to stop."

San Francisco residents who want a pet would have to go to another city, adopt one from a shelter or rescue group, or find one through the classifieds.

“Another problem: people can still buy pets outside of San Francisco, so what happens when they bring the pet into town?”

What color is the pet? What is the pets sexual preference? Is the pet a registered voter? If so, what party?

Shouldn’t they be spending their time on how to get AZ Mexicans to their city?

Pray for America

This ban is as silly as the one on sugar sodee in the vending machines, what, they really don't think people can do this, that SF is a walled city? That people AREN'T already getting their pets in the perfectly conveniently accessible nearby BA cities??

The only thing this story demonstrates is the lack of understanding of a free people, liberty by those running SF ... along with their unbeLEEvable stoopidity.

“People give money to the homeless all the time as an impulsive act, don’t know what they’re getting into, and the homeless end up at the shelters and often are drunk or drugged,” said commission Chairwoman Sally Stephens. “That’s what we’d like to see”, so we voted for the city to give them money instead, as we will have more money to take from taxpayers and give the bums than just the few stupid enough to support the drug and drunk habits.

If the problem is dogs and cats, why not address that in some way rather than banning the sale of all pets. This is really overkill.

Yes, it is overkill, but that is the way our society has gone now. The solution to everything is all or nothing. We have become totalitarian, which is contradictory to any rational person.
